Yeah I was also baited into watching this because of how high the first episode got on the charts. It really was a mid episode, it just had a lot of content/things going on which makes you hope for a lot more in the season. After that is just boring content. Some of the episodes are arguably filler episodes too in my opinion. The characters are definitely the strong point of this show, but I didn't really care for any of them. The worst of them all is Aqua, who's just like any other shounen you see in anime & with a convenient back story ... to make him op. Nothing interesting about this guy at all. The episodes where they focus on Arima & Akane are not bad but not THAT interesting. Like I didn't need to watch this dramatized series of events in order to understand the ups & downs of the idol/showbiz industry. I mean maybe if I was a complete ignorant to what goes on behind the scenes I'd be more fascinated. It reminds me of all the things I didn't like in that Hinata arc of sangatsu no lion. Is the purpose of this show to educate me? I'm not tryna waste my time watching Blue's Clues I'm a grown ass adult lol

hahaha that was LITERALLY a kid's show I just watched. Like, I might show my child this show in the future and they would really enjoy it. You know how lots of slice of life animes are in middle school or high school because that's the target audience they're trying to hit? This show isn't meant to be slice of life but anya is in kindergarten so it literally could be. i really don't think ANYTHING interesting happened in that show like at all. Some good funny moments though. Understandably there is probably more interesting things happening later in the show but I"m probably not ... going to continue watching. Like there is no substance to these characters that would warrant anything genuinely interesting happening. Also this whole family in disguise thing is so contrived. What a convenient way to just hit every check box of what the kids are watching these days. At least in Conan he's like actually working on cases and stuff. If you liked this but thought sword art online was dumb ur literally a hypocrite lol

I'm glad to have watched something that covers some really uncomfortable, sad topics in a way that is very real. I also really appreciate this only came out in 2006, which given the world that is today, was really by definition ahead of its time. That being said, I think what HAS been created in the world today makes this show feel a little outdated; and the art & writing feels so cheap at times that it probably wasn't expecting to hit an audience that has grown so large now. My biggest qualm is that the show was more of a commentary than an actual ... character-driven story? Of course, it is a character-driven story, but many episodes were holistically just an exposure to the different facts of mental struggle in society, as if the viewer had no idea such a thing was really happening. Which is understandable, but many different components are all tied in and cut off kind of abruptly which makes me wish either they were left out, done a little more thoroughly, or extended as part of another season or something. And trying not to spoil things, I'm left at the end wondering what I'm supposed to make of the main characters and what they've learned at the end as well. But I'm not trying to disagree with the actual plot itself. Overall, many moments hit me very hard and this anime was definitely one of the realest animes I've ever watched.

I can appreciate the "world-building" aspect of writing a story because, and I'll again compare to Neon Genesis, they both try to abstract some hypothetical about reality and ultimately speak to that message. I will just say it wasn't that impactful to me here. For one the fantasy is a little too convoluted and I think they were trying to hit a balance, but skewed a little too far towards the fantasy for me. Admittedly I probably wasn't engaged enough with the story, but let's look at everything holistically. The characters are one dimensional. The plot is entirely linear. And the movie ended up feeling ... like a sub plot. Finally, as I've said before, there's an element of romance that ends up becoming too core to the message here and I will just say I'm not sure there's enough complexity here to warrant it. I think if you disagree you might be making projections about your own romance. Or you just have it that good.

It's hard to believe I haven't heard about this anime from anyone else because after watching this, I'm just so thoroughly impressed. Uchouten Kazoku must have one of my favorite story and characters pretty much ever. To start, the storyline is kind of run-of-the-mill, but the absurdity and quirkiness throughout the show is really well done, and it reminds me of those mystical yet well-grounded stories I read in Mushishi. It's just a really good and entertaining setting to unravel a story with. Next, each of the brothers are well made, unique, and complete characters. There's lots of nuance and history behind each character, and ... the way each of their stories unravel is well done, like in Baccano, or Monogatari series. You know it's good when it feels like any of them could have been the main character. And I loved the interactions between them and how it plays out. Although sometimes I kinda don't get it.
My favorite component of the show is honestly the romance. I've never felt like a show was so nuanced and had so many hints towards the dynamic between each character, and yet it never felt like romance was even a part of the show. In other words, it just felt so natural I could really feel like this would be something I'd see in real life. And there's definitely some notions in my own head about the characters which I couldn't even explicitly say are really there. But that makes it feel even more life like.
Probably my biggest gripe was in the end, I didn't get that "legendary" feeling you sometimes get, like at the end of Evangelion. Like was there another season on standby? Or was it all so casual it wasn't meant to be anything left after all? In the end, I guess I didn't really feel like I had much to take away from the show. But in terms of watchability, this was to me peak entertainment.

Just rewatched this for the first time since like 5 years ago and really glad I did. Ironically I think there was just certain things I couldn't understand until I was more of an adult. Then again there were probably many things that caused me to lose appreciation for this show when I was younger, such as not even watching the end of evangelion.

This show to me is one of the most prime examples of subversion, at least to my understanding. The pseudo-harem, save-the-world job making giant robots fight are some key hallmarks of an action-y shounen superstar anime. But Shinji the main character ... is pretty troubled, reserved, and mostly doesn't want to pilot the robot at all. Looking at what's he's up against, it's pretty easy to understand why. It's a lot of pressure for a 14-year old and Shinji's built himself to avoid situations where he could disappointment others. And a lot of other things. But it's also both relatable and insightful; the whole fan-service stuff really drills it in for me too. It's the kind of thoughts and appeals I thought about when I was (around) his age. If I was in his situation, I'd ultimately be the same way. Trying to enjoy what I *think* life is about and spoiling myself away from harsher truths. Unfortunately I don't really know if what this anime did for its time is such a breakthrough, but I really enjoyed how much of the show is like a post-shounen perspective which leads to something bigger.

About the ending, I thought the TV series ending was fine. Even though lots of people think it was stupid. But they easily could've just removed so many filler scenes/episodes and made the ending more comprehensive. Also I will say it's kind of arbitrary w/ respect to what the show's about? In that regard the movie did much better. I see a lot of people say the characters were an issue, but really there were entire episodes dedicated to some of them so idk what that really means. And a lot of people do hate Shinji, but if you don't like/understand him you probably don't like/understand the ending either

I didn't understand at first why my friend said this anime was tarantino-esque, but after watching it it made sense. There's many different winding stories which criss cross and eventually lots of them come together in the end. It was a very unique style which I really enjoyed, kind of like Durara/Baccano. I really liked the animal characters and at first I honestly thought this was supposed to be some kind of comedy show. They all act like they all look the same and there's "real" animals in the show too which was so absurd. But this kind of gets explained in the end haha. ... Despite how unique the show was, it definitely felt like something was missing. But I couldn't really say why, so maybe if I watched this again it would be even more enjoyable. I will say the show was a little too complicated for only 13 episodes. The characters are generally relatable & unique, but kind of incomplete. Like why does this porcupine thing rap all the time. The phone game guy's story felt the best and was definitely my favorite. But even that story felt kind of unfinished in the end in my opinion.

A pretty decent show. I think almost every character is like a one to one mapping of the characters in K-on. The idea is more or less the same and the formula is pretty transparent. So it makes a lot of the show a little bit boring at times. But on the other hand, I liked the idea of being in between a fulfilling social life and a quiet introvert. Which I think few other shows touch upon and was something very unique. So that was good. Other than that, a pretty regular show. Couldn't really tell you who my favorite/least favorite character was since ... it was all very moderate.

I wrote this review too late after watching it. But I at least remember how most of the show made me feel. The best part of the show is that it feels very human; if something similar happened in real life, where some people had superpowers, or something similar, I'd imagine things would definitely unfold in the same ways it did here. So really impressive the author was able to imagine & capture everything about that sort of hypothetical, and still have a solid ending. The major drawback was probably the pacing/sheer amount of content they tried to stuff into the show. Probably if the ... show was 2 seasons it would be perfect. I remember one early episode (like 4 or 5) half of it is just straight dialogue & background information. And most of the first half kind of felt like condensed facts without anything else. So I imagine it was pretty difficult to be able to fit everything into one season. Usually it'd probably make sense for each character to embody some sort of ideal about the society they were in; but I didn't really feel like that was the case, I think more of it was focused on the romantic aspect of each character. I think the only character I felt was like that was the main antagonist - I'd probably say they were my favorite character. Overall really good stuff to think about

The story was all around pretty solid, but the show was way too long. The pace starts really dragging and they even have to put in a bunch of filler episodes, so I guess there just wasn't enough story to make an interesting twenty-some episode series. I understand some people will appreciate that they actually take their time during the training parts, but it feels like they had to in order to actually get out a full episode of content each week. Most of the characters are pretty uninteresting and some are straight annoying. I don't get why anyone would find this orange haired dude ... funny. The stuff he's able to do later on doesn't really justify any of that either. Probably my favorite character was the youngest butterfly girl. Having to flip a coin to convince herself to make a decision is pretty relatable stuff. But overall, nothing very interesting about the show. The episode 19 everyone loves was some of the most literal shounen trope usage I think I've ever seen. It was as if someone took a university lecture on the appeal of Naruto and submitted episode 19 as their final project. I guess the effect was there, but some of those concepts were so random it felt pretty forced.
