-Both feature a japanese main character that happens to get thrown in a group of 'criminals'. In Black Lagoon it's a group of mercenaries, while in Great Pretender it's a group of con artists. -There are interesting backstories for the members of the group. -Black Lagoon is more of a thriller with mature themes but both series show the darker sides of humanity. -There's a very distinct western vibe in both shows. - We get to see the risky heists and missions of the groups.

The entire time watching Great Pretender, it reminded me of Cowboy Bebop. Similar vibes (except the melancholy romance in CB was not present) where people with different personalities & background teaming up to do bad things. The opening songs are also similar.

Similarly, tells about the prosaic aspects of life while the characters ended up with uncommon situations, and adds a bit humour. Both are series that rather should be watched by grown ups since they tell the stories about rather adult problems.

Both have a blonde man and a japanese man, include mafia stuff, drama, police etc etc ITS SO GOOD

The atmosphere reminds me a lot of Baccano, it even seems that they took place in the same place.

Both of these have a main duo with contrasting personalities, resulting in a fun dynamic. There are jazzy themes, with a western aesthetic. Both require suspension of disbelief but in a really fun way that only adds to your enjoyment; Great Pretender with the con artist skills and Fugou Keiji with Daisuke's expensive gadgets.

Very similar characters, overall idea and feel to it.

These shows focus on a guy trying to leave some of his old life behind in a new city and when you think you are understanding the story, another point of view shows you what really happened behind the scenes and have amazing background music for every key moment.

Both have a colorful cast of characters that each bring something to the table during their heist. Both series have a fun and adventurous feel to them too, even if the casts are always in danger of being caught.

Maybe it's only me but i think these shows have some similitaries and both of them make us want to know more about the background of the characters and also the finality of the story

Both shows have a lot of slick manipulation and mind games as well as very poor writing with plots filled with lazy twists and contrivances.

Misfits doing work. Great Pretender and Bungo Stray Dogs follow misfits who take on gangs in their respective style. Great Pretender follows Edamura and Laurent in their con artist schemes. With BSD following Atsushi and eccentric but clever Dazai with the Armed Detective Agency in helping with detective work and keeping Yokohama at balance against the Port Mafia. Both are good action anime, with character schemes made to throw the anime about the place.

The overall execution and environment did not feel similar since Great Pretender was more of an adventure-type anime but the underlying concept was similar. Kakegurui is about gambling and "luck", with an insanely smart protagonist who is good at their craft. They are put through many insane and wild gambles. Great Pretender is about inanely good con artists. They are good at their craft and are also put through many crazy situations and big cons, tricking millions from the corrupt big shots. Each scenario from both shows are set up like acts, a bit like a mini-stories or mini-arcs, though I would say Great Pretender's acts are more  read more

Edamame (Great Pretender) and David (Cyberpunk) have been struggling to find purpose in a society that rejects them until an encounter with a con man and a cyberpunk changes everything. Danger. Money. Thrills. Entering a life of crime is easy, but surviving it and leaving it can be impossible. Cyberpunk is a more violent series than Great Pretender, which focuses on the inner turmoil of all the main characters.

Network. It's a huge network of everything, from the wealthiest individuals to the most street causal of them all. The most sophisticated swindlers to the toughest of thugs. Odd Taxi and Great Pretender are no strangers to a world of said diversity coming together to enlighten all with a great story to tell. Alongside such, I have to point out the chemistry and dialogue here is impeccable too, something that cannot be easily found in anime these days. The synergy between characters and behaviour is all the more reason to watch these two. Follow Great Pretender in a 4-arc story of the greatest pretenders. Follow Odd Taxi  read more

These both have main protagonists who outsmart the opponent. Great Pretender doesn't involve games, but it is similar in the way of it's complexity.

Vibrant, stylish shows about goofy criminals accompanied by jazzy music. There is no way that Great Pretender wasn't heavily inspired by the Lupin series.

Whilst the two anime are indeed entirely different, they both follow protagonists who have a thing for being something of a trickster, whether that be playing one another via teasing and silly little frantic children commit, or if it is actual shills and cons in an attempt to reel in serious stacks. These anime know how to use their mind game elements, and present them in a fun little gamble making for an entirely enjoyable show leaning to more of the less comedic side. Both are good comedy anime, you will know which audience they cater to but both are pretty good universally assuming you are  read more

• Both the anime have similar vibe. • In both the anime bunch of individuals starts working together without knowing each on of their dark or tragic past. • Both the anime use jazz music as their BGM. • Both the anime have perfect balance of comidic

I dont know what is about these 2 but they have the same vibe

They both have two male protagonists and have to do with taking requests from clients and solving different mysteries within each episode.

Appare-Ranman! and Great Pretender are anime series with an ensemble cast of colourful characters. Almost everyone has a troubled past that is uncovered and addressed in small personal character arcs through the series. Of course, the character personalities and stories in both series are completely different. However, Great Pretender is more than just a heist anime and Appare-Ranman! is more than just a racing anime. The aspects that makes these series enjoyable are the same.

The same plot where it's the bad guys whom does the work of the good guys in a very unconventional way.

TGP is like a cross between Lupin III and the live action show Leverage (which I would also recommend) but it is hard to break into a style that already has been done so well time and time again. Like TGP the smaller stories come together to form an overarching narrative. There are plenty of "that could never happen" moments while utilizing the support of top class writing that balances the comedy, action, and enough drama to keep it interesting in between.

--both follow a linear timeline with sections of time (weeks/months in Great Pretender and years in Vivy) before the next mission --both have separate arcs that take up 2-4 episodes --both protagonists undergo massive changes throughout the anime, with entire personalities undergoing shifts --would recommend for those who like "journey" anime, where the characters discover themselves and what they stand for

Both are similar in the way that the plot starts off with a European man having an encounter with a Japanese man and ends up dragging them into their fields of work. Both European characters appear to carry heavy pasts. They have some episodes that are episodic in nature as well as some episodes that deal with exploring the stories of their main characters further. Great Pretender has more of a thriller and suspense factor while Case Files of Jeweler Richard mostly deals with a more lighthearted atmosphere. Both have lots of drama.

Both are about a gang of thieves with colorful and fun characters who try to make money from stealing rich guys. Pretending is their specialty. Think of Great Pretender as a Netflix Lupin with a bit more drama and storyline. Also, if any of you reading this wants to get into Lupin, but doesn't really know where to start, then Part IV is probably my best recommendation for beginners.

Although the plot are far different from each other, both shows have similar balance of seriousness and quirkiness. Both are quite witty shows with interesting and mysterious characters. Both has some unexpected actions, making it suspenseful but are presented in a unique and fun way.

similiar vibes and character cast

Both anime have writers who know how to work in foreshadowing into the plot without making it seem too obvious, and classy clean artstyles, themes of wheels within wheels. Great Pretender has a richer supporting cast while ACCA is more plot-driven. The execution of both shows is unpretentious and just a lot of fun.

There aren't many animes out there, were the protagonist have, lets say "dubious morals", so I am always happy when I find a new one. Gallery Fakes Fujita Reiji and Great Pretenders Thierry Laurent fit the bill perfectly. They are both witty, clever and a little bit more selfish than your average anime protagonist. Although the animation style is very different, boths shows give of a very simmilar feeling. If you are looking for a fun ride with money, art and crimes I can highly reccomend you to check them out.

Both anime have main protagonists who are approached by an individual who claims to "help" them, but they usually end up manipulating them instead. Also, both main characters are in a weird job situation (or lack of) that is the initial cause of their issues as well. Although both series lean towards a more realistic depiction of certain groups of people, they have their high energy and cartoonish moments.

Both have a clearly unique style in animation and are also incredible Netflix originals

both shows feature crime as a general theme. both escalate very quickly and end up way darker then they started. Both revolve around getting different jobs done but have underlying plots throughout. Gangsta and Great pretender are probably my top two shows and are very underrated (also Worick and Laurent have the same VA and if you love Laurent you'll love Worick)

Great Pretender = Lycoris Recoil. This is girl version. You can feel great teamwork with special chemistry

Cultivated. Not exactly based on story or the likes, but rather the style. In what seems to be not a sentient due narrative, a more refined method of telling a tale comes to play with these two anime. Vastly different for sure, but there is no mistaking a classical theme with what seems to be high-class expertise in sly behaviour. A touch of love too, perhaps? I'd imagine many would encounter Great Pretender over Brave New World first, but do go with the one you are missing out on if you haven't seen both.

Both are similar in how their arc unfold after the set of incidents occur, shown by one of the main characters in the plot. Though, one is set from the criminals perspective and one from the detective perspective.

This is mainly an art-style recommendation more than anything else. The backgrounds and character art feel very similar between the two (likely due to the same artist), but the way that they are used to tell their own environmental stories is also similar. If you want something very bright, popping, colorful, and interesting to look at, these are both great showcases of that.

You cannot trust anyone (not even yourself perhaps?). In a world where the mission is put first, and the job is absolute, teams of spies and con artists make for an interesting trek with the countless missions they are assigned; a faint hope trails them, however, and that is the truth of their relationship. Taught to be strangers with one another, only to exploit the abilities we possess, these spies and con artists still make for some wild content and enjoyable episodes. PP is set around the streets and royalties of Victorian London, whereas GP is a global network. Despite that faint message in their heads  read more

The art style and character designs really remind of the Great Pretender. And the way the characters interact and move. It's like if the Great Pretender fused with Spy x Family.

I mean the whole series. even the genre is different 2 main character have same role and personality. dasai osamu = laurent someone that plan all behind because he can guess everyone action espesially other main character edamura = atsushi so "innocent" and have their own "justice". just watch both and you will understand

Color palette and brightness of these shows are different. But they have some things in common. The protagonist: He is a good-willed and somehow naive guy, who tends to act on his morally good impulses. He tends to get in trouble when his shady companions include him in their doings. However, luck seems to be on his side often... The protagonists' companions: They work in a rather shady business and involve the protagonst in their dealings. Fake separations and arranged chance encounters between the protag occur. They (seemingly) tend to get in trouble when the protagonist has one of his "good" impulses during the execution of a plan. It's clear that the pair don't take themselves too seriously with how they execute their premise. From Kill la Kill's wacky animation to "clothes do evil thing", and GP's wacky scandals that sometimes feel a bit over the top. Both anime do know a thing or two about an unbelievable atmosphere, but it is what makes it all the better to watch, considering they make no effort in shifting the tone of such. Both are good anime with great visuals to call their own, as well as having good OST accompanying what is at the end of the day, a fun story.
report Recommended by NextUniverse
One is more serious than the other, that is for sure. But when it comes to pulling off what the characters are best at, expect over-the-top execution that would otherwise be borderline impossible or downright illogical. With the craziest heist-like scams, to the nonsensical revenge story. Great Pretender and Inferno Cop know a thing or two when it comes to fine presentation. Both also know a thing or two about other cultures. Both are good anime with comedy that will make you stick around for their other distinctions to come.

Despite having a lot of differences, the concept of Persona 5 and Great Pretender is pretty similar. Both are about a group that targeting famous people who did bad things, and they make sure those people will pay for what they have done.
