Living by this principle, the middle schooler Nishikata gets constantly made fun of by his seat neighbor Takagi-san. With his pride shattered to pieces, he vows to turn the tables and get back at her some day. And so, he attempts to tease her day after day, only to find himself victim to Takagi-san's ridicule again sooner than later. Will he be able to make Takagi-san blush from embarrassment even once in the end?
I'll just say this: This series is for pure comedy and enjoyment, but right now it's really outdoing itself in terms of comedy and has such a charm that people really shouldn't find a reason to hate.
I'll keep this as brief as possible:
STORY: As of right now, not much of a story or plot, but that's totally fine, this series' purpose is to present the everyday lives of two very good friends in middle school who play a one-sided game of trying to embarass the other, with Nishikata always getting the short end, which is always VERY funny. It's one great hell of a development
to see if whether or not Nishikata can squeeze out a win for now, and perhaps find out more.
ART: Shin-Ei Animation really doesn't try to do too much with their animation, but damn, the animation here is clean, and depicts Takagi's smug (perhaps the best of all anime smugs by a cute female character) so well. Now granted, some people might not like the art style and design of the characters, but then again, there's stuff like Boku no Hero Academia, Mob Psycho, and Kill Al Kill, and those series did GREAT despite the odd designs they themselves have.
Sound: Not much to say here. It gets a solid grade here simply for fitting the scene during which it is playing. Because of how this series functions, there's 0% chance of this series getting a grandiose soundtrack, but it doesn't need it.
Character: Nishikata is a fun character to watch despite how he usually gets short-ended. Granted, he can be too naive, but at least he's a good person at heart. Then there's Takagi, a smug queen at heart, and a playful personality. She's really the charm that make this series worth watching. Of course, the three other support characters do get their own segment as well.
Enjoyment: It's probably already mentioned above, but seeing Nishikata getting into trouble or played like a fiddle is all worth it for the laughs. And of course there's Takagi's cute expressions...
OVERALL: Just watch and enjoy it as your typical slice of life comedy. If you're not into those kind of series, just don't bother. Trust me, though, if you do decide it to watch it, you won't regret it.
First off thanks for upvoting this review guys! This is my first review and it feels good to get a solid response from it. I'm editing and adding more of my thoughts for this reason.
I don't like using the Story, art, sound, etc, way of reviewing. This is due to may great anime having no story and shit art but still being endlessly better than anime with complex stories etc.
The big reason to watch this show is the Super witty dialogue/humor and the somewhat lovable innocent characters. Now time to turn off your brain and laugh at the main character Takagi-Sans wit as she mentally
tears apart Nishikata much alike how DoomGuy might rip a demon apart. The anguish shown on Nishikatas face is quite satisfying after he has been proven to be an idiot twenty times per episode...if you're a sadist.
Look... I'm gonna level with y'all. We all had that kid in school who could always one up you or prove you wrong, and personally this anime brought up some embarrassing memories of me being an idiot. Much alike how many people cringe while watching Watamote or Chunibyo and other delusions.
You will quickly learn that Nishikita isn't treated like a human being by the shows creators. He's a tool...a tool to be used by Takagi-San to make the show entertaining. He isnt treated fairly or morally by anyone in the show and it makes me sad, what a sad character. He's so innocent but everyone screws him over, and all for the sole reason of he's the punching bag so lets lay into that bastard.
Really though if you want an anime like this but without the emotional battery try watching Seki-Kun master of wasting time. Its very similar except every episode is 10 minutes. Which is more viewer friendly for this type of show anyways.
THIS ANIME IS NOT OVER. There is still time for it to become more than a girl pushing around a dopey guy, I don't stop halfway through anime and eagerly await what will happen next in this mediocre yet fun anime.
As some other reviewers mentioned, this one becomes very repetitive. At some point, you will start to question the sanity of the MC, and his struggles to avoid being teased by making the most ridiculous lies and tricks. It comes to such a point that almost in every occasion, you can see what is coming.
Unlike others who praised the "cuteness" of this anime, I beg to differ. There should be a minimal creativity involved in making a show, but this work avoids such and instead relies of "cute characters". I am not trying to be picky here, I do enjoy a very wide variety
of anime, but I also honor my time and my intelligence!
With Winter 2018 comes a plethora of Slice of Life series. One of them being a war. A war between 2 middle schoolers. Enjoying their youth to the fullest comes the ecstatic interactions between our two main characters, Nishikata and Takagi. In short, the females always win.
That’s basically the whole premise, a girl teasing a boy to no end and his failed attempts at retaliation only fans the flame even more. However, there’s always variety in the way she does her schemes. It’s fun to watch each time and highly enjoyable. As a manga reader, I am glad they were able to present all the
emotions correctly and keep the tone as it should be originally. I appreciate the staff at Shin-Ei Animation for making this anime as fun as possible.
I also enjoy the extra cast with their small screen time. The random but appropriate situations the girls make are just as adorable and fun to watch even when it’s for a short time. Works as a lovely transition to the Main Cast once more.
If you’re having a hard time on a Monday and just can’t seem to get in any sort of mood, watch this anime and it’s sure to bring your spirits up.
The art is more nicer than I expected, especially the eye design. The manga had a super simple drawing for the eye unlike the anime where they added a bit more. I like it since it adds a bit more spice to the characters. I love the background art and the colours used in it. The animation is also great. The facial expressions are super fun to see and the character movements, although small, adds a more human feel to the characters. It’s small details like those that I appreciate in a series.
The soundtrack isn’t too special, but it does its job properly, making the anime sound even funnier was accomplished by the soundtrack and I enjoyed listening to it. Both the OP and ED are indeed super catchy and I never skipped it for its cheerful visuals. I loved how we got both Yuki Kaji and Rie Takahashi to play our mains. That makes it even better for the series.
The crazy antics between the two characters are what makes the interaction so...middle-schooler like. Seems just right when it comes to 2 kids having fun teasing eachother. Although, it’s quite one-sided. Even so, the character chemistry is great and you mostly never get bored watching the dynamics between them.
Overall this is an anime that you wanna watch for fun. Nothing too endearing, but there to help with boredom and to put a smile on your face if it does at all. I loved reading the manga and the anime is just as good as it’s presented. I am satisfied with this adaptation so far.
