Granblue Fantasy The Animation Season 2

On the run from the Erste Empire, Gran and the crew of the Grandcypher receive an offer to negotiate a ceasefire. Meeting at the neutral territory of Albion Citadel, they are welcomed and hosted by Vira Lillie: current Lord Commander of Albion and a friend of Katalina Alize from her officer training at Albion. Imperial General Furias grants the Skyfarers an official pardon, but fails to defuse the tense situation.

Given time to unwind, the Skyfarers attend a gala hosted by Vira to celebrate the arrival of the crew. However, tensions run high, as Furias and the Erste delegation remain at Albion even after the negotiations conclude. Learning about the existence of a Primal Beast on the island, the crew is shocked to discover a letter from Katalina announcing her resignation.

While Gran heads off to find their former comrade, Eugen and Rackam decide to investigate the Imperial presence on the island, suspecting a more sinister scheme lying up the Empire's sleeve.

Of the two, this is the better season of Granblue Fantasy. Although I don't think it could stand on it's own without the first season as an introduction to the characters or setting.

It was for the most part more of the same, but the story was a bit more interesting. It delved a bit into the history of some of the characters, and it was a fun and exciting adventure. It's too bad there isn't more to watch as of yet because it left on a bit of a cliff-hanger.

I liked the animation for this season better than the last season. It was cleaner, and ... it suited the background better. Whereas, in the first season, the background design and the character animation didn't seem to work together as well.

The music was pretty nice. Not amazing, but decent.

If you liked the first season of Granblue Fantasy, you will likely enjoy this one as well. And if you didn't, you probably won't care for this season either. But for fans, it is good.

Mixed Feelings

Season 1 was a generic fantasy riddled with cheesy, cringy or pitifully stupid elements on all scales.

Season 2 threatened to be just more of the same with its filler episode start, but then suddenly got a much better arc from the second episode. It revealed some interesting background for one of the important characters, it had an interesting, understandable and relatable villain, the plot was suddenly not just completely generic monster of the week garbage but seemed well-planned at last.
It was still terrible on the finer details scale, the characters were still doing stupid and cheesy things, but at least on the plot level ... it impressed me and gave me hope that the show will go beyond mediocrity.

Unfortunately the other two arcs weren't as good as my raised hopes. They were better than season 1, gave some revelations about a few of the characters' pasts and hints of a better thought out overall plot, but their core conflicts reverted to something generic and disappointing.

In the end the said overall plot remained unclear and thus the season is mostly meaningless, maybe making a slight step of progress but still leading seemingly nowhere.

Given enough seasons the story might turn out to be a colossal load of crap even on the largest overall plot scale, or a grandiose feat of world-building, with many interesting and interwoven character stories. But even in the best-case scenario the seasons we had so far certainly did a piss-poor job of revealing it and would remain objectively bad, mediocre at best.

Okay, so the first 5-7 episodes are fine, picking back up from the past season isn't hard, a few things just "happen" but that's okay. Then about the end of the 2nd arc it's like the pacing just goes off the rails. Things apparently occurred, IMPORTANT things, in the middle of a fight scene, between the end of one episode and the start of the next. No explanation, no show, not even a tell, it's just "oh it's like this now". There's also the fun factor throughout the season of "Oh, we're fugitives from X, but X can however just show up ... at any time uncontested to drop off a note, but lord help us if they FIND us..." (WTF?)
For the last half of the season it's like they were told to "wrap it up, we don't care how", and just threw what they had together to make episodes, no explantions or development reqiured.

I understand it's a show developed from a game, but you need SOME internal consistency, or else it's just rememberberries for the gamers and everyone else is going to think it'sa piece of crap. In which case it's ALSO bad press for the game.
