Watching the subbed version, lots of complex jokes in tone, would recommend the show be watched this way. Ignore the hate. People are real salty about the art change around the internet, this is a show you shouldn't judge by its overall score.
There is a distinct feel they seem to be going with here. you'll know if it hits by the team rocket scene in episode 3.
I used to watch pokemon as a kid and this show recaptures that feeling of childlike wonder. The show is aware of its own silliness and pokes fun at it.
Story, its pokemon, you know the drill, however the connection to the game gives the show a whole new meaning.
The art is a massive improvement, and fit the tone of the show is a huge change up and is now self aware.
Character, tbd too early
Enjoyment, this is fun, mindless, feel good entertainment. read more
Satoshi finally came to the Alola Region and boy is this fun to watch. Trying not to watch this series with nostalgia goggles, let's get down into my ratings.
STORY: 6-10 (so far)
Right now, passing through Ep 7. There has been a primary focus on the starters. Each starter had their own dedicated episode. We are already 7 episodes in and we have not broken out of the school phase yet. I was expecting for him to move onto his journey to do the island challenge (at least that was the indication given to me in Ep 2).
Ok, why did I give it a 10-10? Before y'all get the tin hats and pitch forks, let me explain. Toward the tail end of the XYZ series, Oriental Light and Magic (the studio for Pokemon the last 20 years) was moving towards the cutting edge of animation technology. Most of the backgrounds were moved from hand paintings to digital 3D spaces. This allowed the animators to focus more on the animation without having to worry so much about the background. Hence why some of the gym battles towards the end of XYZ were the best animated in the past 20 years.
Moving onto today with SM, OLM has moved the entire animation pipeline to digital. There is no more scanning paper drawings and digitally converting them. The character designs were a slight victim to this change, however overall we have seen the character design for Satoshi (Ash) change since "I Choose You". Now to say that his design is a step backwards can be true, however it is really a step forward. Watching each episode and looking at the in-betweens and comparing it to the XY design, it is a night and day difference in the animation quality. The old character design was created in the 90s when the industry was using cell animation. They kept the same character design for the past 20 years and as animation advanced, the design was showing its limitations due to its age. Through this new design, you will find that Satoshi has way more animation options.
Sound was overall pretty good. I liked that they were doing some stereo panning with some voices to have a sense of direction for the characters.
Without nostalgia glasses on. I can say that the jokes and the cringe were enjoyable. They finally switch up the TR "Blasting Off" gag for something completely different.read more
This is by far the biggest downgrade for Ash (Even worse than Gen 5 downgrade, even the Gen 5 Ash looks like a genius compared to this). This dose not even feel like the Pokemon we know. When I went in to this i didn't expect the worst comedic relief character ever (Ash). Go from Gen 6 Ash where he was actually enjoyable and fun to watch not to mention how much fun XY and Z was, and then go to the Gen 7 Ash. Who is absolute garbage mostly because of the forced comedy.
I'm not joking when i said "Thank god team rocket is on and has some T.V time.". They are some how more funny than Ash and I don't know why. Is it because they are actually good at doing comedy right? That's my guess anyway. Let me say this has the potential to be a good anime if they tone down the comedy.
If you want a good comedy show make it good comedy not forced. look at Teen Titans for a good way to do comedy (Its not even a comedy and i was laughing 10 times more than watching this anime.).
In short the potential is there it can be good show, but since there is only 6 episodes out to watch this isn't turning out really great. Way to much comedy (I know its a comedy, but even a comedy show has to have limits to how much comedy is in a show, or else it just turns into a snore feast). Turn down the comedy alot but have enough in there for us to laugh, and make it serious like XY and Z.(Maybe not as serious but serious enough for us to actually enjoy an Ash that knows stuff and isn't just there for comedic relief).read more
This story dives back into the world of Pokemon with Ash [Satoshi in Subbed] but this time in the Alola region.
Alola region is currently the newest region added to the world of Pokemon but the most notable part about it is it's inclusion of not only old Pokemon but also new. One of the main issues that i have had with Pokemon is their incessant need to add countless number of Pokemon that were unoriginal or just looked stupid. Not only have they cut down by bringing back old favourites, all of the new Pokemon are actually unique and original
Another significant change between this series and previous series like XY is the change in art style. Long gone is the traditional anime style, but now an almost cartooney look. I saw this in the trailer when it was announced and many people were worried including me. This new art style however fits perfectly and actually looks better than some of the previous serious such as Black & White which took a hard hit to the animation quality.
The sound quality has also had a massive improvement in the Dub. Us Dub listeners who might not realise, had very sub par audio with voice actors phoning their performances in, awful music and bad effects. This season it feels like they have regained strength and are attempting to bring back what the original seasons had.
The story of course is that of Pokemon which is basically 'Ash travels and tries to catch Pokemon'. This normally would have gotten a 6 from me due to it being pretty boring now. It seems however that OLM realise this and have decided to include a school system in causing new conflicts, characters and enjoyment. If you are a fan of the typical school anime then this will add to your enjoyment.
My overall enjoyment though was great. I have not felt this much enjoyment watching a Pokemon series since Galactic Battles and it feels like traditional Pokemon again. OLM have outclassed themselves with this series and I can't wait to continue watching. read more
