Overlord

The final hour of the popular virtual reality game Yggdrasil has come. However, Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, decides to spend his last few moments in the game as the servers begin to shut down. To his surprise, despite the clock having struck midnight, Momonga is still fully conscious as his character and, moreover, the non-player characters appear to have developed personalities of their own!

Confronted with this abnormal situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take control of this new world, with the hopes of figuring out what has caused this development and if there may be others in the same predicament.

Overlord is an interesting one. As mentioned in my konasuba review I am not a fan of Isekai however this one really peeked my interest and im glad I watched it.

The premise of Overlord is simple, a gamer is stuck in his avatar in a realistic world.

A man named Mamonga founded a guild with his friends in an MMO known as Ainz Ooal Gown and somehow when the servers died, he and his base were teleported to an alternate world in his lich avatar with all his power and prestige.

He is an overlord as the name suggests of an lair. He has ... several minions/NPCs under his control he and his friends created.

They're all wonderful wonderful characters.

You have a horny succubus named Albedo, a badass butler named Sebas, a Loli vampire who turns into a leech named Shalitear and several others.

The humor is very well defined with it being situational humor such as one of the minions constantly mistaking Ainz's cluelessness or mistakes as vast intelligence, a giant hamster or Albedo constantly being thirsty.

The action isn't constant but there's usually a fight scene every episode.

This isn't a heavy comedy. It isn't a heavy action either, it's more of a drama truth be told.

There are twists and turns. There's enough mystery to keep the watcher engaged.

The first season of the show (of which there are 4) is dedicated to the building of character development and world building. We explore this world with Ainz and uncover the mysteries in it. We are strangers to it just like him.

The antagonists for this season are really fun and the other antagonists shown foreshadow future events.

Ainz is an interesting character because he IS human in spirit but in form he is a giant skeleton, he is constantly at conflict with an "am I human?" type dilemma.  He can't eat sleep or procreate. He just exists.

He isn't a hero. He doesn't care about others. But he isn't a bad person either. He just embraces the role that was forced upon him as Overlord.

The world itself is a typical MMO fantasy setting with little of interest or uniqueness. Goblins, skeletons, zombies etc.

The main driving point you are looking for is "are there any other players here?" "Is Ainz alone?" and to know the answer you'll simply have to watch it yourself.

The animation is crisp and clean looking and the voice acting for the sub is better then the dub.

Not much else to note on.

It's a very well written story you should give a try.

Mixed Feelings

Overlord is definitely an interesting anime. At times, it feels as though there's signs of what could be a great anime, however these signs quickly disappear and the anime goes back to the same boring, repetitive, stereotypical anime. The worst part of Overlord is hands down the characters. Ainz is by all means a good main character, he's fairly interesting and fun to watch. Outside of Ainz, I could'nt care to learn a single characters name. The side cast are all bland and forgettable. All of the girl side characters are just in love with Ainz, not a single one of them show any interesting ... characteristics. The male characters are even worse, they have barely any personality except for the fact that they love and want to protect Ainz. This is the main reason why I gave this anime a 5 and find it hard to recommend this to other users. Characters are the most important part of a show, and its where Overlord fails unfortunately.

Other than the characters, Overlord is fairly good in some other areas. The animation is nice, although the character for some of the characters are downright bad, and dont get me started on the CGI. Throughout the show, the pacing is good and the story is easy to get invested in despite it being pretty bare bones. The fights are fun, but the constant shouting of names for their moves gets really annoying, really quickly. Overlord also does the stereotypical anime thing where they'll fight for 10 seconds, and then stop to talk, repeat this 5 or more times until the fight finally ends. Overlord really loves doing this, and at times it felt like the characters would fight for 2 seconds before stopping and having a little chat about how they're finally going to play their 'trump card' or they say something dumb like 'is that all you've got?'

Ultimately, Overlord is a good anime if you want to turn off your mind and be entertained for a few hours. The story is easy to get into, the characters are basic and the action is just barely okay. If you're expecting some amazing isekai show that changes the genre I would not recommend this show. Overlord was just barely okay in my opinion, however it didn't do enough to make me want to watch a second season.

I don't understand how the premise of this story would sound interesting to anyone: OP lvl999 guy gets SAO'd into a new land and then decides to role-play as a rookie adventurer, during which time he beats up weaklings for marginal benefit when there are thousands of better decisions he could make to reach his goals. This whole anime is like watching an NBA player play semi-seriously against kindergartners. There are no interesting characters, the plot is slow and pointless, the storytelling is all over the place, the art design of characters is ugly and ridiculous, it's chock full of terrible CGI and bad animation, ... an endless stream of stupid attack names that seem like they were chosen by letting a 3rd grader pick out "cool" words from a hat. All of his followers are flat cult follower boot-lickers who treat his middling IQ plans as genius. The action consists solely of face-slapping character we don't know with no emotional or plot build-up to make it enjoyable. This is not how to write an OP protagonist story. The only good part of this is that him becoming skeleton guy robs him of an appetite for ecchi, even if there are pointless sexual asides from his follower harem anyway.

Imagine all the worst qualities of isekai and OP protagonist stories and this one has them all.
