Koe no Katachi

As a wild youth, elementary school student Shouya Ishida sought to beat boredom in the cruelest ways. When the deaf Shouko Nishimiya transfers into his class, Shouya and the rest of his class thoughtlessly bully her for fun. However, when her mother notifies the school, he is singled out and blamed for everything done to her. With Shouko transferring out of the school, Shouya is left at the mercy of his classmates. He is heartlessly ostracized all throughout elementary and middle school, while teachers turn a blind eye.

Now in his third year of high school, Shouya is still plagued by his wrongdoings as a young boy. Sincerely regretting his past actions, he sets out on a journey of redemption: to meet Shouko once more and make amends.

Koe no Katachi tells the heartwarming tale of Shouya's reunion with Shouko and his honest attempts to redeem himself, all while being continually haunted by the shadows of his past.

This anime checks every boxes, the story is meaningful and has an important message, the characters are mostly good, audio and visuals are enjoyable, the execution is on point. Only issue is that many things from the manga were left out, the most noticable is the lack of focus on side characters. I'd assume they didn't want the movie to be longer with already 2 hours of running time, but honestly it could've been made into a 8-9 episode series instead.

Overall a beautiful movie, if it wasn't for these minor issues it would've been a 10, regardless a must watch if you like drama or ... even just not opposed to drama

Mixed Feelings

gotta be honest, i thought this turned out to be really overhyped. like mannn i really wished i liked this more.

it looked undeniably beautiful the whole time and i felt immersed in its world it presented.
the length of this movie is soo peculiar because it felt like this movie never really justified its length. the story was soo shallow and melodramatic. whiny characters. every 5 minutes some certain character just start yappin about the mistakes they made in the past and complain how much they hate their lives.

its very annoying storytelling and feels forced. and you're getting this experience for 2 hours. ...

liked the ending though so i guess thats cool.

Objectively a stunning and beautifully well animated film with a premise that sounds interesting. However, falls flat with the express focus on making the abled-bodied comfortable with Shoko being a mary-sue that forgives her bully in the end (not stating that she has to be cruel to her bullies or that redemption isn't good, it just comes across as being flat and disinteresting with how little Shoko is fleshed out beyond her traumatic incidents) and has no further personality than being a shy, sweet, loveable but sad damsel in distress. I find this extremely distressing given the topic matter, and my own experiences with being ... bullied as a deaf child - Note: I am not profoundly deaf like Shoko is, but I do wear a hearing aid and use sign language to communicate. Regardless, my own experiences with this film makes it very uncomfortable for me to watch, and largely, I would not recommend it to anyone who is looking to see narratives on disabled people in anime, because this movie, is far from that.
