Nanatsu no Taizai

In a world similar to the European Middle Ages, the feared yet revered Holy Knights of Britannia use immensely powerful magic to protect the region of Britannia and its kingdoms. However, a small subset of the Knights supposedly betrayed their homeland and turned their blades against their comrades in an attempt to overthrow the ruler of Liones. They were defeated by the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that these legendary knights, called the "Seven Deadly Sins," were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights themselves staged a coup d’état, and thus became the new, tyrannical rulers of the Kingdom of Liones.

Based on the best-selling manga series of the same name, Nanatsu no Taizai follows the adventures of Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, and her search for the Seven Deadly Sins. With their help, she endeavors to not only take back her kingdom from the Holy Knights, but to also seek justice in an unjust world.

It is a masterpiece when it comes to story telling, appropriate pacing and character development. The lore is vast, all the main charcaters have unique aspects to them and the show does well in getting us accustomed to the theme and the character nuances in a span of 24 episodes. The art style is good but the fights need better animation. The only annoying thing for me was the infatuation of Elizabeth with Meliodas, but as we will learn later in the sequels, there is a good reason why Elizabeth is infatuated with Meliodas.
P.S. the next two sequels (excluding singns of holy war) are ... going to be even more amazing but the fourth sequel is going to crash all your hopes for the show and story down the drain.

Mixed Feelings

On paper, "The Seven Deadly Sins" has all the ingredients to be a major success: A talented voice cast, a big studio, a decent musical score, and a wide range of characters coming from all kinds of races set in a medieval fantasy world. Despite the promising elements, the series sadly falls short, which ironically is majorly caused by the "main" characters Meliodas and Elizabeth.

It's unfortunate because many of the other characters have rather interesting stories and undergo clear character development. And then there's Meliodas. He's the typical overpowered main character who can not lose and sometimes even loses on purpose to reveal his ultimate ... trump card, but that's not even the main issue. Overpowered characters can still be compelling if they have intriguing traits or likeable qualities. Unfortunately, Meliodas lacks any redeeming qualities. He uses every possible chance to sexually harass Elizabeth, regularly fondles her breasts, looks under her skirt or even touches her ass while Elizabeth just sort of lets it happen. This in turn causes Elizabeth to be a rather dull character which is often reduced to fan service or being the target of the various sexual assaults by the main character. She ends up letting Meliodas do what he does because well... He's Melidoas, I guess? This results in a frustrating and uncomfortable viewing experience at times because the show treats it as a gag when it's really not funny at all. Hawk the pig is the mascot of the group which I personally found annoying since his existence is neither explained nor serves a greater purpose and just sort of is there and says pig related puns here and there. Most of the other characters end up being more interesting than the "main cast" and it ends up creating an unhealthy and unbalanced dynamic with the characters.

While the story suffers tremendously because of the tons of fan service and questionable depictions of women it has at times, it does succeed in other areas. The animations looks good in this season and is especially allowed to shine in fighting scenes as they are done well. Actually intriguing characters such as Ban, King or Gilthunder make up for the lack of intrigue created by the lead characters. I thought the ending was pretty satisfying and fulfilling for what it was even if the outcome is very predictable which the show tries to combat by adding various plot twists. Additionally, it's rather disappointing that the show seemed to be unafraid to kill off characters, only to backtrack and reveal that they didn't actually die due to unexplained reasons or events that occurred off-camera which is lazy writing. A good way to summarize it all is that the show is written in a very immature way, which is a shame.

This anime is a mixed bag, because I can see the appeal and thought it does have good qualities about it but on the other side it has glaring issues which taint the viewing experience. Let's say it like it is: Sexual harassment is not funny no matter how much you try to make it look like a gag. Some people will enjoy this anime, others will hate it. I'm not sure if I would recommend this show to other people but I can say that if you're willing to overlook the obvious problems it can offers an entertaining experience centered around themes of friendship, love, and visually striking fight scenes.

This is one of those animes that 12 year olds and angsty teenagers will love for all the action, shock and awe, and ethically questionable shameless fanservice. But if you are even a normally functioning, semi decent human being, you'd be embarrassed at yourself for ever watching and liking this as you grow older.

The characters pulls powers out of their asses in fight scenes. Overused Clichés and tropes thrown around at the walls to see what sticks. Character Motovations doesn't makes sense. Main protagonist is a child looking overpowered walking deus ex machina with a hidden edgy powerup mode who fails willingly when its ... plot convenient. And he molests the primary female protagonist at every opportune or inopportune moments he can get his hands on her, and no one calls him out on this except the mascot character which is also a joke character. The said female character feel neither disgusted nor accepting of this inappropriate sexual behavior as she exists solely to let the Male protagonist have his way. And some other female main characters are lusting after the said male star at some point relevant enough to become part pf the plot. This show will make you wonder if this was some failed attempt at making an ecchi harem, repurposed at the last moment to create a shounen out of it. The titacular: seven deadly sins do not actually embody the concepts of the sin they are named after, like someone thought it would be cool to name characters after the sins but then gave not another thought.

The only good thing about this show: the fight scenes, drops the animation bar hard by the 4th season, to the point it becomes an eyesore. I'd strongly recommend against watching this anime as you are probably better off reading the manga or even the synopsis of this whole and see if it floats your boat.
