SynopsisDuring the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.
Based on the award winning light novels of the same name, this anime adaptation follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story - one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.

Every so often an anime comes along that isn't afraid to challenge the conventions by which a story is told. Too often, despite being noteworthy or groundbreaking, these shows can fail due to poor animation, lackluster characters, or a marked failure in plot development. In other words, they get so caught up in being unconventional that they sacrifice the other, more important aspects.
Thankfully, Baccano! is not one of those.
Animation
Baccano! maintains a very high standard of animation throughout its entirety. Brains Base made good use of color to heighten the effect of the more dramatic moments in the show. The animation quality is particularly noteworthy considering the fact that Brains Base is one of the smallest studios in the animating business. The fact that Brains Base managed to achieve a level of animation to match many of the larger studios and maintain that level of quality for the length the show, especially during the action sequences, is a credit to their effort and skill.
Sound
Baccano! opens with the excellent (and very appropriate for the setting) track "Guns N' Roses" by Paradise Lunch. The jazzy theme of the OP fits perfectly against the backdrop of 1930's America, in which the majority of the show is set. This jazz themed music continues throughout the entirety of the show and adds a certain authentic flavor which is often lacking in other shows. The only true downside to the music is the ED, which is a stereotypical J-ballad. However, this is only a small detraction from the otherwise great music though and can easily be skipped over.
Another area where Baccano! excelled was the voice acting. The talented VA's for each role managed to breathe life and individuality into the large and diverse cast of characters. The most singular achievement of the voice actors is that each of the characters can be easily identified by voice alone, as each actor has brought a different timbre, a different nuance, sometimes even a different accent, to each role.
Characters
From the marvelously hilarious Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent to the psychopathic Ladd Russo, all the characters are very well designed and as unique as their voices. Isaac and Miria are without doubt the most memorable members of an excellent cast of characters. The duo effectively serve as a glue that holds the story together. They dance through the series's multiple time lines like a giddy gyroscope on acid, occasionally colliding with one of the other cast members at random (usually by fluke).
There is one minor downside regarding the characters. Baccano! is a 13 episode series, with a cast of approximately 12 main characters. Though they all receive a certain amount of development, some critics would argue that it is not enough. However, the quality of the overall show is of such a high value that any shortcomings in development had no impact on enjoyment.
Story
The story in Baccano! is very straightforward. Usually, it is the style of in which the story is told that receives the most attention. Baccano! adopts a non-sequential storytelling style. While this may not be anything new (the TV broadcast of Haruhi and the movie Pulp Fiction did the same thing), it adds to the enjoyment by removing the need for the universally derided "down time" episodes. Baccano! has multiple individual storylines, all of which intertwine into a larger story. At first, the events and characters may be confusing. But once you're past the initial surprise of leaping feet first into the middle of the story, you find yourself immersed in an unusual, fast-paced and entertaining style of storytelling that whets your appetite for more.
Overall
Baccano! contains a nice mixture of drama, action and comedy. This, coupled with some amazing characters and a good short story, makes Baccano! one of the most enjoyable romps in recent years. The absurd, comedic moments serve as a perfect counterweight to the action and tension that builds throughout the show. Nothing is too dramatic or depressing, and both the humor and the violence aren't forced. The most enjoyable thing about Baccano! is that each character's actions feel natural to that character and this comes across to the viewer in a big way.
Baccano! is one of the rarest types of anime as it successfully merges comedy, suspense, action and even a little romance, without sacrificing animation or sound quality. It is a gem that will appeal to fans of many different genres and it is one of the few animes that can be watched again and again without suffering any loss of enjoyment.

Throughout my childhood, I wasn't really much into movies or the whole moving picture theater idea when I was young. I was more into video games and playing outside. All that changed when i watched a certain movie called Reservoir Dogs. At first, I was only into it simply because of the blood and violence. But further throughout my multiple viewings, I realized that the story and acting was also a big part of my fascination to this particular film. Then a few years after that another movie created by the same person came out called Pulp Fiction. This was done in the same style as his first movie but on a much bigger scale, involving so many more characters and following more stories stumbling toward one goal. During one of my multiple viewings of that movie throughout the years, i had a friend tell me to watch a movie by a man named Guy Richie named Snatch. Why am I taking the time to write 169 words about actual movies? Watch them to find out.
Story (Outstanding)
It's because you see, Baccano is very heavily influenced on these western movies made in this style. From the opening theme (Snatch) to the storytelling (Pulp Fiction) to even the coolness (Reservoir Dogs/Godfather) oozes western-style. Therefore, it's practically pointless to explain the plot of the show since they show how the show ends in episode one. That's the hook, the viewer isn't supposed to understand what they are seeing at first. Instead, they are enticed to want to know how did a 'mess' such as this happen in the first place. After that giant hook of showing you how it ends, it all unravels almost perfectly into a story involving over a dozen individuals. For the most part they are all complete strangers but through a little luck, chance, and happenstance their stories will cross paths most definitely.
...with a little anime flair of course.
Art (Great)
The art is something of perfection, from the minor details in the shadowing and brutal violence left on victims, to major details like the painted streets of 1930's New York City. You can tell there was a large team summoned to make this 13 episode epic. Where it shows the best though are all the action scenes, where the movements are fast but smooth at the same time, and gun shots come complete with flash and gun smoke. Blood splatters in all different directions, teeth and bones can be torn apart and you can point them out as they're flying in the air. It's all just simply amazing. Art would be a perfect only if they wouldn't add some poorly placed 3D backgrounds in some spots, and if certain parts weren't so overly dark. The darkness ruins some of the beauty of a few scenes and its a shame since this is a show where everything it shows is a visual treat.
Sound (Outstanding)
The sound is second to none. The op is classic, and I love how they meld the last episode synopsis with the opening theme. But this show would definitely not be as cool without the jazz styling, piano solo's and everything else in between. Every scene has an amazing amount of environmental sounds running at the same time and definitely sets the mood. If you watch it a few times I swear you'll hear something different every time. This is easily one of the few shows best enjoyed on a good surround sound system on high.
Characters (Great)
The characters are out of this world. Some plucked off of gangster flicks, some plucked out of action flicks, and some straight out the anime stock. With a cast of characters this large, you're bound to find a favorite one or have fun pointing out what RL actors they resemble or portray. Their voice acting is also top notch, I even enjoyed the annoying characters voices as well and thats rare. The crazies were my favorite overall though, just how they managed to sound so insane without it being annoying but rather fun was rather cool. My only gripe is the "comedy relief" of the show. Why do 'serious' shows such as this require comedy relief? Sure its fine to have to relieve the viewers from all the masochism throughout the show. But i don't think they should have given so much air time to the comic relief as they did.
Enjoyment (Great)
This show is basically a 4-hour Tarantino-esque movie, if you remove the credits and extra recollections that get the viewer back on track. Overall its a perfect sized anime for a Tarantino-esque story. Any longer and the viewer will get tired of the mixed up style of story telling especially with the attention span of people these days. Think of it as "it will get exponentially complicated if this series went to 26 episodes. Although i would be all for a brand new story if Narita Ryougo made it. But only time will tell. It would have been cooler if they kept anime without all the anime 'hoodoo' and tried to make it a serious anime. But like the Japanese say, "It can't be helped."

Same author, same studio. Both animes focus on various characters from the underworld -- criminals, violent gangs and misfits -- with splashes of the occult and the supernatural but set in a thoroughly modern society not unlike ours. While Baccano! had immortals and mysterious elixirs propelling the story along, Durarara! has a dullahan, which according to Irish myths, is a headless rider. Like Baccano!, Durarara! is told by an all-seeing narrator, populated by a large cast, and initially seems very scattered in terms of its storyline but should begin to make sense the more episodes you see.
Both have many main characters and the overlapping of all their stories forms the plot of the anime
Both shows are adapted from novels that are by the same author, Narita Ryohgo. Not to mention that the same animation studio and team worked on both adaptations. I'm almost certain that if you enjoyed Baccano for the obvious reasons, then you'll love this.
I just noticed it after few episodes of Durarara!!. Both animes Baccano and Durarara are about many character stories that link connection one another in one big story. Both series got similar climate, both are comic.
While not in any way copies, if you liked one of the series you're sure to like the other written by the same author and animated by the same studios.

Same Original Creator. Same company, director. Music is the same. The characters are similar and the story is told in the same way. Loads of characters aswell.
Same author, same style for opening. Lots of characters and lots of plots, all related together. Many points of view for a whole story. Even miria and isac from "Baccano" appear in an episode of durarara!!
Both from the same author and director - both masterpieces! Both have many small stories which come together into one. In Baccano! most of the characters meet on a train called the Flying Pussyfoot and in Durarara!! the characters all meet in the city of Ikebukuro. Baccano! is all centered in the USA in the 1930's with some of the plot taking place in the past while Durarara!! mostly takes place in modern day Japan. Both series have extremely interesting characters and story. Both series have a strong element of mystery in them too and they both evolve in real life surroundings while they both have supernatural element in them. To sum it all up if you enjoyed Baccano! then you'll enjoy Durarara!! and vice-versa.
Both are from the same Director and are very similar to each other except that baccano took place at an older year and Durarara is during this time city.
Both emphasize great characters and the satisfaction of the viewer in one happens to these characters. Both also tell their stories in a highly original way, revealing plot points later on and in almost random places. Heavy use of foreshadowing and guessing games is present as well. But above all, both are incredibly enjoyable in a Tarantino-esque fashion, and leave you wanting much, much more.
Seeing as both are made by the same company, the characters are easy to love and get attached to. Both story lines are being told by different characters of the series, giving you different points of views; which makes it soo much more interesting. Of course each character has their own plans for each other, but they all get invovled with each other's situations (as do most animes), the art style is amazing. Each character is (i think) pretty well-rounded, some of them remind me of other characters that i've seen based on there actions and personalites. I would defintly recommend this series!!!

Though these series take place in different time periods they come across with generally the same feel. Not surprising considering the same team is behind both series.The use of mystical elements are present in both, but the true magic comes from the storytelling. Both series introduce multiple characters that seem unrelated that end up all being part of a larger connected story. Marvelous storytelling. Great use of music. And a good mix of blood and laughs make them both great picks.
Both are very crazy and nonsense anime. They are funny.

I never write reccommendations simply because the same writer wrote both stories, there are story-based reasons behind this reccomendation...
Within the plot, both stories feature:
- a number of gangs
- mysterious gand leaders
- supernatural characters thrown into the mix
- Neither serise's have a cast of; innocents, weaklings or do-gooders
- a religion/science connection (angel living with scientists in one, alchemy in the other)
Character wise:
- Claire and Shizou; hard working guys who keep themselves to themselves, yet quickly turn unhinged during conflict, both may or may not be supernatural
- Miria and Issac, like Walker and Erica; male+female best friends, a goofy and likable criminal parnership who share the same interests
- Chane and Celty; the but-kicking, silent ladies in black with a supernatural background
Both series are by the same author. The art styles are similar. Both are full of blood and awesomely choreographed fight scenes. Baccano! takes place in the 1930s while Durarara!! takes place today. Although they take place in different time periods, both deal with gangsters, wacky villians, and cute likable characters (especially boys <3).
Same producer, director etc etc. The cast of this one's so much more better. The art's changed and the story is modern but the time jinxes and the mystery/action feel remains the same and so does the awesomeness of the plot.
Not gonna say the same thing everyone else has, because it's obviously already been pointed. Baccano!'s Isaac & Maria, after drinking the elixir, lived until the date of Durarara! and appear in it as well.

when i've watched this anime, i thought that is awesome as durarara) and after reading wiki i wasn't surprised that it made on Narita Ryohgo novels .
Snazzy opening, catchy background music, urban myths and legends and a ton of lead characters marks this series as the 21st century edition of Baccano.

Haha, like who didn't see this one coming. Same author and studio, both have seemingly disjointed stories (Baccano to a much larger extent) and huge, colourful casts that all eventually come together for an exciting finale. Not to mention, both are incredibly entertaining!

For starters they're both by the same manga artist and they also both use the same composer (two very epic soundtracks, I've gotta add!)
They each have various storylines following different characters, which all end up overlapping. They also both include similar characters elements such as the use of gangs, information brokers and supernatural beings - the Black Rider in Durarara and the homonculi in Baccano. Baccano has more action and gore whereas I'd say Durarara has more character depth and comedy.
There's also a fun little crossover appeal. The password to the Dollars website in Durarara is "Baccano" and Isaac and Miria have a couple of cameo appearances in a few of the episodes.

As Durarara!! is much more known, Hence this would be the logical thing to do, even though Baccano was written first.

First, both have the same author. So you can see the similarities of the art. The way the story goes on is similar to each other too. Especially when it cuts from an idea to another. Characters in these two animes are very connected to each other. And how fate made them encounter each other is just amazing. You know? Coincidence? I like types of stories where coincidence exists. And, well, both have a good ending.
Same in how each character is given a big role, not all focused into just one character.

Once you watch Baccano! You must watch Durarara!! and vice versa. What makes these shows great is that they have so much in common with the layout of the actual show. But the another bonus is that these shows are completely different at the same time, all the characters have great depth which makes the twists and turns in the anime so much better. Its also for people who loved our beloved duo Issac and Miria!
Like Baccano!, Durarara!! was written by Ryohgo Narita, had the anime made by Brain's Base, was directed by Takahiro Omori, tells the stories of multiple characters in parallel, has lots of action, has a supernatural element, and is R - 17+ (violence & profanity).
First of all, both shows are made by the same person, Ryohgo Narita, so if you liked Baccano! then it's almost guaranteed that you will enjoy Durarara. Both stories follow the multiple view points of a very large and unique cast, so both series tend to jump around alot, giving the perspective of each character. And like Baccano, Durarara may seem confusing at first but comes together very well at the end, showing how all actions are connected. In addition, both series have a supernatural element: Baccano has the Immortals while Durarara has a modern-day dullahan or headless horseman if you will. Furthermore, as the Immortals in Baccano had a deep and meaningful story, so does Celty and her pursuit of her head. It's hard to determine an exact plot for these two series as they simply show how all actions are connected, how each moment influences another and the many ways they come together. I could go on an on trying to convince you to watch this, but I feel it's best learned through experience, my only goal is to simply introduce you to Durarara, the rest is up to you.
In conclusion, if you enjoyed Baccano, you will not regret watching Durarara. Thank you for your time in reading this, sorry it's a bit lengthy.

Both anime take place in the same exact universe and a few cameos. But besides that, they both deal with mystery and gang wars. With a hint of supernatural sprinkled on top.
They are siblings! The same drawing styles, the same author, the same opening video...
Both animes are based off light novels written by the same author. They also feature a large cast of unique characters that deal with strange, unnatural events.
This is sort of obvious, maybe somebody has already pointed this out. They should have, but I haven't seen it. Both Baccano and Durarara written by the same guy, Ryohgo Narita. If you liked one of them, then it's a no-brainer to watch the other one. Both are spectacular anime, if you like that style of story telling and character-driven narrative.

Both of them are themed around Jazz and Blues. Both animes display alot of martial arts and gunplay. Definetily check out Baccano! if you loves Cowboy Bebop!
The style is very similar. It has a very jazzy feel to it that fits with the show like it did with Cowboy Bebop. The characters are so loveable and unique and so different from one another like the people on Bebop. Not to mention the soundtracks have a similar feel to them.

Baccano! is a strangely underappreciated show that has a huge cast of good characters, a compelling plot drawn from the ample source material, a soundtrack that complements the show well, action, comedy, drama, intrigue...
If you appreciated what Cowboy Bebop had to offer then you'll find a lot to like in Baccano!. It's a show with definite rewatch value.
Bebop and Baccano! are all about style. It’s the thirties: tommy guns, stars from black-and-white movies and jazz. Bebop is more like blues with its sadness and noir films features. Baccano! is a jazz like it was in really beginning, totally improvisation. You don’t know what will happen next. Great cocktail from retro, detective stories, comedy, cruelty and heartbreaks. Both these series was inspired by films like “The Godfather”, “The Untouchables” and so on. You’ll find crime families and gangland killing, fire-fights and pursuits, maniacs and comedy characters in Bebop and Baccano!
Soundtrack is also magnificent, when I watched Baccano! it was like I’ve met a Yoko Kanno’s genius work for Bebop one more time. Although storytelling is extremely different, for Bebop it’s a story per episode, Baccano! is a mosaic from plotlines that fully combined, they are really similar. You'll share an entire range of emotions with each character and find that these creations are somehow cast in the same mold.

In both series you’ll find awesome fight scenes (both martial arts fights & gunfights), mafia, an immortal shota boy (Czes in Baccano, Wen in CB), and comedy despite the violence and mature contents.
Both are anime that you can rewatch again and again without getting tired of them.

Both shows have a similar kind of jazzy soundtrack and a cool type of similar feel to the shows. But they are different in the fact that baccano stick to one story but cowboy bebop is episodic.
Both Baccano! and Cowboy Bebop have excellent visuals, jazz on the soundtrack, high-intensity fight sequences, and likable characters.
Same kind of show : you'll find the best OST in both (jazzy, really cool), same spirit/atmosphere with really great characters/action you will enjoy all the show without any moment of boring !! I guarantee you'll not be disappointed !! 2 must-see.

Cowboy Bebop and Baccano! have a jazz filled soundtrack, slick, fluid, and detailed animation, and are bitter sweet series.
Both have an americian cast of characters, are full of action, particualrly involving gangsters and just a general sense of coolness about them that sets them apart from other anime
