Synopsis

It isn't the world you know. There wanders a girl with jet-black hair, ebony clothes, and a strikingly blue, glowing eye. Her name is Black★Rock Shooter. With a huge cannon in hand, she throws herself into a fierce battle...

Meanwhile, in another world, middle-school student Mato Kuroi is drawn to Yomi Takanashi, her classmate with an unusual family name. Mato does her best to talk to Yomi, who just won't open up. Yu Koutari mocks her best friend Mato's efforts but at the same time, supports her. Mato also finds herself surrounded by other colorful characters at school, like the eccentric school counselor, Saya Irino, and the hot-blooded captain of her club club, Arata Kohata.

Then, one day, the window of opportunity opens. After Mato sees that Yomi has her favorite picture book, "Li'l Birds At Play", they strike up a conversation and Mato is invited to come over to Yomi's house. There, they gradually break the ice, until a girl in a wheelchair appears. This is Yomi's best friend, Kagari Izuriha...

Two worlds. Mato and Black★Rock Shooter. This is the story of their "pain".

This is my second review ever written and this contains solely my opinion, i apologize in advance for any grammar mistakes you may find while reading it.

Wow this anime, as i'm scrolling through the reviews it's like 2 different worlds (no pun intended) i see half of people rating it at 1-3 and the other half rating it 9/10. To be fair most reviewers just end up giving it a 5, I guess you could call that neutral, neither a masterpiece nor utter garbage, but i feel the need to give some credit to this anime and am going to state all I think about read more

Black★Rock Shooter would be the last time that I will ever watch with the name Mari Okada in it. I should have learned my lesson with the pile of nonsense Fractale, but nooooo! I JUST HAD to watch this until the end.

Okay, I admit, not all of it was bad. For starters, the use of CGI in this anime was superb. I mean, really. I think BRS established a new standard in me when looking at CGI in anime. The fight scenes were well-made, and the level of violence put in here is nothing to laugh at. BUT, I’m afraid everything else just felt… ridiculous read more

This anime is the ultimate could have been anime. It had so much potential that was not capitalized. There was a good starting idea that was very poorly presented.

Story 5/10
The story initially makes no sense and seems to have no real direction it's headed. Guess what? Not much changes. Plot doesn't really go anywhere. Story doesn't make sense that much. The two different worlds are not touched on very much either.

Art 8/10
The art was spectacular especially the CGI. But there were some problems in the CGI such as when BRS was fighting BGS.

Sound 10/10
Had one of the best opening tracks of the season and the read more

Ahh, Black Rock Shooter… je t'aime

In the 1960s, which is 60 years before when I come from which is the future, a recondite avant garde composer by the name of Captain Beefheart graced the airwaves with his trundling avant garde music that challenged the status quo of blues music with a menagerie of outré bumps and scrapes, replete with a healthy dose of guttural growls, vaguely resembling music. Yet these renegade evocative soundscapes informed a portent of society. In order for progress to subsist, artistic vanguards like this are of incorrigible necessity.

Now, I'm going to go on a bit of a tangent here, so please read more

Recommendations

Both Anime focus around girls giving up something for a fight and the souls that are attached. They also have anime styles that don't stick to the norm.
Little Girls fighting against each other in parallel universes.

One bright side, where you have a kind of slice-of-life feeling while
there is the other "darker" side, where the girls fight.
A big difference is the card game, which is not in BRS but the dream sequences and
the overall atmosphere are quiet similar.
Dark Gothic animation when the story heads into the other world, intricate designs for the fighting girls outfits, not to mention dreams and erasing pain... the Anime are very similar in tone.
The "other world" is a dark Gothic place filled with only a few places of light and bright colors. The "avatars" are other selves representing what one wants to throw away based on their human desires and scars. There is also a lot of action and the characters are in themselves interesting.
In both there exists a different world where people fight each other. In this separate world there exists an "avatar" of a person in our world. In C it's the person's "Asset" which reflects one of the person's possible futures. In BRS it's an another person (resembling the real world version) which reflects the feelings of the person in the real world. In C their fights happen consciously and they affect the real world while in BRS it's vice versa, they fight unconsciously and the real world actions affect the fighting in the other world. The main characters are somewhat similar personality-wise. They both don't want to hurt others but at the same time are afraid of getting hurt.
Both involve epic action with young girls fighting using powers. Both involve tragedy and have that feeling of Sci-fi. Drama is also involved in the plot.
