This is the first anime review I've ever written, so hopefully everything will turn out ok. Any feed back would be appreciated as long as its constructive ;)
This review won't contain any spoilers.
What would you do if you had something that told you the future? If you already had all the answers for an upcoming test, or knew how to avoid bully's on the way home from school? What about if it told you were going to die?
Mirai Nikki is a brilliant mix of a Psychological Thriller, Action, and Romance. Yuki is a boy who gains the ability to read the future through his personal diary, which is awesome until he finds out that there are 11 other people who also have their own diary's and are his opponents in a competition to become a god. But thats not all bad, he happens to have someone to protect him. Enter Gasai Yuno, a cute girl who goes to Yuki's school. She also has a future diary, and it turns out she has a bit of a crush on Yuki.... and is an insane psychopathic stalker, or Yandere if you will. The story follows these two as they try to survive in the killing game they've been placed in.
Personally, i think the anime is a 10/10, but for this review i gave it a 9 because of a few small problems in the story.
Story 9 - The story of Mirai Nikki is at its core a Romance, though its so much more than that as well. It explores how ones actions and willpower can change the future and how good people can do go insane or do terrible things because of traumatic experiences. The pacing is fairly fast, but not forced, even when there's no intense action going on, you find yourself on the edge of your seat knowing that an enemy could pop up at any time. I experienced all sort of emotions throughout the anime, fear, happiness, excitement, sadness. The shock value was insane. My reason for a 9 instead of a 10 was that some of the things that happen in the anime are soo over the top ridiculous and unbelievable that i just couldn't reasonably give it a perfect score and that some of the things that happen in the last few episodes get a bit out of hand, you'll see what i mean when you watch it.
Art 10 - Don't know what all there is to say about the Art. It's not the best ive ever seen, but there's no problems with it. The action scenes are fast paced and well animated and the characters all look fine. I see no reason to dock an anime points unless the animation is so miserable that it has negative effects my viewing experience, and one of my favorite animes is Berserk, which is terribly animated.
Sound 10 - The Opening and ending themes are fantastic, and go along perfectly with the anime. The first opening theme is my favorite song of all of them and does a perfect job of maintaining the feel of the anime. The music generally goes very well with the scenes that its played over, especially when Yuno does something awesome.
Character 10 - I would rate this higher if possible. The characters is where Mirai Nikki truly shines. Yuki is a kind of a wimp who has to rely on others to protect him, and ive seen plenty of people complain about this, but in all honesty i think that makes the anime so much better. He's a 14 year old boy thrown into a battle royal with people trying to kill him, I would probly be a bit of a wimp if that happened to me too. He's forced to seek aid from and rely on others in order to survive. And he isnt without redeeming moments either. All the side characters are well developed and have their pasts and motives explained in the story and a few of them are just plain awesome. All that being said, the part of this anime that got me hooked, and the reason its become one of my favorites of all time, is the female lead Gasai Yuno. She's incredibly cute, and incredibly psychopathic, and the perfect yandere. Shes also one of the most unique characters I've ever seen in an anime. Most of the psychological thrills stem from trying to figure out what the heck shes going to do next. At one moment your scared of her, another you can't help but smile at how cute something she does is, then you notice the knife in her hand and your scared of her again. Sometimes you want her to do something insane and at others your shocked about something insane shes doing. She's the selling point on the entire anime for me.
Enjoyment 10 - I couldn't stop watching Mirai Nikki, i watched it over the span of 2 days. And spent the entire day at work the second day anticipating what would happen in the anime after i got home. I have yet to watch an anime that kept me on the edge of my seat to such an extent as Mirai Nikki.
Overall 9 - Mirai Nikki is a great and unique story, the characters are excellent especially Yuno, who is one of the most unique characters ive ever seen in an anime. Mirai Nikki is certainly worth giving a shot. read more

I basically had went to the trouble of signing up an account for myanimelist.com just to write this positive review for Mirai Nikki after watching episode 5.
Like the synopsis said this is a psychological thriller, with murders, gore, sins and some demented killers.
However unlike most thrillers the story is extremely good, the characters are all very unique, each with deep, well developed personalities that are slowly revealed to the viewer as they watch more and more episodes of the series. Its a mechanic that makes shows very addictive to watch, just like how you want to spend more time with your date as they reveal more and more nuggets about their interesting personality.
Story 10 - Story is amazing, the first 5 to 10 minutes of the first episode was pretty typical, and it was deceiving (in a good way) because the story quickly ramped up and starts to deliver. Every time I watch an episode it delivers something new and unexpected, like a plot twist, or a revelation about the certain existing characters. And every time these plot twists had me wide eyed in pleasant surprise, thinking "Wow this is so cool!" or something like "OMG, holy S*&t! I didn't expect this!"
Art 8 - Art is decent i guess, the action sequences are well done, but pale in comparison to this season's "Guilty Crown" for action. Overall art is 8 as I compared it with last season's artistic masterpiece "Hanasaku Iroha" , which the art was so good for a weekly anime series that I believed it set a new benchmark for artistic quality in weekly anime.
Sound 8 - The music (OP and ED) are decent, they wisely avoided sound during some of the intense, dark & scary moments where they let the suspense and fear build up in the viewers.
Characters 10 - Characters are fantastic, awesome for an anime (or manga). Each and every starring character had unique personalities that are uncommon to the typical person. I am only at episode 5 of the anime and I have never seen such a demented and crazy cast. Only the main character Yukiteru-Kun seems the most normal, but even he has his fears and complexes that makes him withdrawn. The best thing about the characters is that the story only reveals small nuggets of their personality and motive every now and then as you keep watching the series. This means that the uniqueness and most likely, the demented craziness of each character drives the storyline further and further as each character's motives are revealed.
Best thing is that most of the time you don't expect the revelations made about these characters, giving you a "wow" moment and surprises you with a plot twist.
An yea, many reviewers give props to "Yuno" the other main character of "Mirai Nikki". And I agree, a pretty girl who has a hidden killer personality, stalks the lousiest loser in school like the most diligent killers in slasher movies, and hacks and slashes everyone else with a handaxe. How cool is she! She stays a mystery and keeps viewers wanting to see more and more of her real motives, personality and her backstory.
Enjoyment 9 - I would give this a 9.5 if they allowed it in the ratings system. After watching 1 episode of "Mirai Nikki" at a random anime livestream channel it drove me to find and watch all the other existing episodes and wait fervently for the release of the latest ones. Only thing is that I probably can't have a good appetite while eating and watching this anime, due to the gore :)
Overall 9 - Again I would give Overall a 9.5 rating if allowed, "Mirai Nikki" has a great plot. A psychological thriller with gore is not your typical anime. Most of the time anime makers would turn away from such bloody twisted story for the fear of censorship and lack of young viewers. However "Mirai Nikki" is a great watch for anyone above 16. Everybody can enjoy the suspense of a good thriller and be hooked to the various character developments and plot twists. I would easily rate this anime as my choice for anime of the year 2011. Basically if you are even reading this review, find a way to watch the show by any means possible, yes it is that good, enjoy "Mirai Nikki" :) read more

Both series have a young protagonist who is given/discovers he has an unusual power and is required to fight similarly powered people to survive. Both have similar art styles and rather stylishly violent action on top of its inherent moral dilemmas and pervasive air of desperation.
As soon as I started watching Mirai Nikki, I noticed a big similarity to Deadman Wonderland. In both series there's a strange girl that will do anything to protect the boy, both have everyone playing a life or death "game" where you either kill or be killed, the characters are very similar, and in both the main girl is yandere.
There are many other little details that make them similar, but so far those have been the biggest similarities I've seen. I felt the same sort of feeling while watching both of them, aswell. Despite the fact that the art is quite different, they're very much alike.
There's a style of horror in them that I don't see in many animes, which makes one a must watch to anyone who liked the other!
same theme and similar characters but different setting.both have a main character with a weird girl in bizzare situations in a weird world and both have violence ...
The principal caracters are in a ''game'' where they have to kill each other. Some want to participate, other have to fight against their will. Ganta and Yuki are quite similar, they are both weak at the begining and become more stronger through the story. They both are protected by a strong girl...
Very, very similar to Deadman. If you like one you are almost guaranteed to like the other.
The atmospheres of both shows are extraordinarily similar, possessing a common darkness and near-constant suspense. Deadman Wonderland tends to be a bit flashier about the gore, but both are undeniably gory. Both have supernatural elements to them, and the protagonists of both appear eerily alike at certain times (Ganta and Yukiteru, and Shiro and Yuno, respectively). There is also a common theme of survival, and, sometimes, being forced to cruelty and murder in order to continue living, as well as deception. The main characters are never quite sure who to trust, and they suffer greatly if they put their trust in the wrong hands.
These shows are far from being copies of each other, but they both demonstrate multiple commonalities and similarities and divert greatly from most anime even in their own genres, making them rare finds for the fans of this type of anime. If you enjoy one of these two shows, you’ll most likely enjoy the other, as well.
Similar from the very first episode - main boys are very similar, main girls too - sweet&deadly, both contains some kind of survival game and are kinda bloody. Also, both aren't very good
protagonist is a scared cat, some mentally deranged girls protects them but the guy also makes effort to be a hero, violence, released around same time.
Young, silent protagonistis drawn against his will into an unusual game for life and death. And strange girl follows him. And both titles are pretty bloooody.
Both are dealing with deadly games.
In both, there's a strange girl that will do anything to protect the boy. It's also unknown why the girl wants to protect the main boy so much. Both have everyone participating in a survival game. Lots of kill or be killed situations. There's gore scenes in each. They both offer the same kind of suspense for the viewer.
Both are intense, bloody and engaging shows that center around survival. Shiro and Ganta's relationship is very similar to that of Yuno and Yukkitteru-- both female leads have the dominant personality, mixed with mystery and more to them than meets the eye. Similar art between the two. If you enjoyed one, you will enjoy the other, guaranteed.
A boy finds himself involved in a game in which participants need to fight each other, and a girl helps it survive
1. Both have the same setting of modern day Japan
2. Feature weak-willed boys who eventually become hardcore through various hardships but maintain their humanity
3. Lots of gore, plot twists, and other messed up stuff
4. Has a female character who constantly saves the boy and is hiding secrets from him
Overall amazing animes really worth watching
Very similiar vibe, main characters are pretty much the same. I feel that Mirai Nikki is a combination of Higashi no Eden's cell phone game and Deadman Wonderland's theme and atmosphere.
- They are both involved in a game in which they risk their life.
- The main boy and girl characters are VERY similar, with the girl being crazy about the boy.
- The main boy protagonist is a coward and got in the situation because someone set him up or he has to do it.
Beta MC.
Really similar yet different, you'll probably like DWL if you liked Mirai Nikki in the slightest.
it's both about survival...a whiny main character a crazy female chick and other characters that try to help him
Deadman Wonderland is a dark series where the protagonist is in very real danger and could die at any moment in a high-stakes 'game'. It's a lot more bloody than Mirai Nikki, though to me, they share similar themes and concepts.
A survival game, a mysterious girl helps him, both have very similar feelings.
Mirai Nikki has a similar feeling to Deadman Wonderland. Both involve a 14 year old boy in a survival game fighting for his life. Also, the main girl in both animes appear to be crazily in love with the boy and is constantly looking out to protect him from danger. Both shows are violent (DW is more violent).
Oh God, these two series. You just can't help but think about Mirai Nikki when watching Deadman Wonderland as well as vice versa. Let's break this down here and see what they have in similarities:
1) Both series has a weak protagonist (at first) that gets their life turned around forever after the pilot episode as well as special circumstances. The main protagonist in both series then meets a young girl who has an interest in him.
2) Both series main female protagonist at first seemingly playful has a darker side to themselves as well as a holder of many secrets.
3) In both series, it's all about power and nearly every one where its usage is essential to survival.
4) Both series contain psychological themes that is presented both physically and mentally with some thriller like endings.
5) Both series contains drama, action, as well as gore presented in various ways to portray the reality of the characters' survival/deaths
6) Both series contain supernatural elements
Overall, both Mirai Nikki and Deadman Wonderland are two series that should be watched only if one enjoyed the other and vice versa, at least to some extent.
similiar story
if you love watch deadman wonderland , may be you love this anime to
Both revolve around death. Both have similar protagonists, and even the partners of the protaginists. Both carry similar concepts about survival.
I haven't watched the other recommendation yet, but it does resemble Deadman Wonderland A lot.
Both are a nightmare survival game, filled with blood and gore.
Both have the main character as a shy boy.
Both main characters have a girl that has strong emotions for the boy.
Both the girls are extremely strong and take anyone and anything that targets their crush, no exemptions or thoughts about right and wrong, if you touch their crush you'll be torn to pieces.
Both anime have sort of wimpy character who just gets thrown into a survival game. They both have a dark feel to it. They both have really impacting story with cool characters and fun animation.
Your average wimpy teenage boy, thrown into a game of life and death. Turning his life upside down. Accompanied by a psychotic girl that only cares for him. Yandere for short. With all this to stand by, both anime are precisely the same.
Same atmosphere and greatness of story.DW is less Grus-um and more happyish you could say
Both girls love the main character and both girls have like a split personality were there nice normally, but when something happens they go INSANE
Same as in Mirai Nikki there is a lot of fighting in both of them, but in Deadman Wonderland the characters have powers (that involve minipullating their blood into some insanely cool weapons
both have the strategic/determined to win streak in the main protagonist,
both have a weak/pitiful/too nice, young boy, which he is partnered with a powerful, motivational young girl which has the intent to kill, while she keeps secrets
both is given a power, that they have to win to survive the 'game' by killing off every other supporting character
both have lots of blood, twists, and wicked laughing
both show the characters mentality as they kill others for survival, in which their personalities change throughout the show, toughening up as the plot/story develops.
both are similiar in which its a survival game with blood, twists, and the protagonists are personality wise the same.
Both are dark and violent death game anime centered around a young, yet fairly innocent boy and an eccentric young girl.
The two animes are a litte heavy and with a bit of gore action. (Spoil Alert) One of the main characters in either one of them is a girl with a disturbed split/bipolar personality. Another similarity is the fact that in either one of the plots, the characters have to forcely kill or fight each other.
Both have a young protagonist that recives unusual power, and must fight other opponents with the same kind of power, similar art style, nice story and lots of gore~~
Both involve a game to the death, and both involve a yandere. Though in this case, Mirai Nikki takes both to the extremes. If you enjoyed the thrill and suspense from Deadman Wonderland, you'll most definitely crave for Mirai Nikki.
Very similar male protagonist, dark themes, very unpredictable, great consept.
The MC is somewhat useless but grows some balls later on. The main female heroine in both animes have a somewhat similar relationship with the MC
When I first saw Deadman Wonderland, my first impression told me: Hey, I've seen something like this somewhere before.
Both animes are set in a 'futuristic' supernatural fantasy world, featuring a 'strong' female protaganist and 'weak' male protaganist who struggles to overcome the shock of sudden change in their life.
Personally, I prefer Mirai Nikki over Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is too straightforward and shallow, it lacks the deep, thrilingl, filling plot/storyline and the strategies and the conspiracy that Mirai Nikki offers. Also in Mirai Nikki, the male protaganist's battle for his change in life is more evident.
If you enjoyed this anime, i guarantee you'd definitly love Mirai Nikki.
Both have a weak male lead who is dragged into a deadly survival situation where he meets a strong female lead who is always protecting him. Both male leads get stronger in mind and body as the series progresses and both series have tons of blood and violence.
Same feeling.
Wants to protect each another at all cost.
To sum it up, Deadman Wonderland is a not-as-good version of Mirai Nikki.
both have gore and similar survival aspects. they also have two developing male leads which are covered by the more stronger yet unstable female counterparts
Both animes have many people that controll some sort of power, for Mirai Nikki its the future diaries and for Deadman Wonderland its the branch of sin. They both have a main male character whos afraid and not ready for the power they hold, have a female character following them, both are competitions to the death.
The male protagonists start off as whiny, nervous wrecks once they're thrown into life threatening situations and against impossible odds, but eventually grow some balls.
Both have a main character that is a pathetic and whiny cry baby, as well as a horribly annoying love interest.
Also violence and crap.
Both are hards. However it is hard to explain in English. I totally love both main girls.
I can fell the same sensation of reality and the same emocion when I see both.
Both main characters start out pretty weak and after a while get the hang of things as they move along in the twisted fate that was cast upon them.
Both are almost the same, a survival game of life and death. Even the characters are much alike. Overall if you are looking for an anime with thrill and excitement and bloody, I recommend to watch them both.
Both have gore and very similair.
because both of them have as background a Survival Game
The gory wonderfully whacked out setting is a pure pleasure. Also the main heroins in both are complete yanderes
Deadman Wonderland is like Mirai Nikki but better. It's like Akira but better. It has the same dark and bloody aspect with twisted personalities and interesting back stories and an archetypally cute girl for a young boy who suddenly finds uexpected powers, but like gasai yuno, shiro is so much more than she seems.
One of the MCs is Yandere. The other MC starts out as a major "Beta" male but grows to become braver as blood, death and time passes by. These are two main things they have in common, but they both also have the "kill or be killed" kind of plot. Blood will be spilled, and if you're into that kinda thing, you will be into this.
both involve a life threatening 'game' of sorts , where the main character (school boy) is thrown into it unwillingly & is accompanied by a female companion who feels she must protect him.
As many of you above I too go for this same crazyness, not too much of my favourite as plot and telling style but still too many similarities with characters to miss this one out!
Both have crazyy crazyy bitch to kick HIS ass !!
Stomachable amounts of gore, good stories, main character pushes away female character

Both of these Anime deal with notes that fortell things. On one side, you have a strong male lead who writes the death futures, on the other side, you have a weak male lead who sees his own future predicted and his possible death.
Both series deal with a teenage protagonist given an unusual supernatural tool in an otherwise ordinary world and the moral dilemmas, mind games, and fights for survival that ensue.
Both are very intense psychological mystery anime. Have similar characters as well as character interactions.
They both involve common items that give incredible godly power, lots of death and violence, and a hot chick that hangs around the main character (who ignores them/uses them as a pawn). The real difference is that Yuno (in mirai nikki) is like a lvl 13 yandere, while Misa is like a lvl 3 annoying emo supermodel.
Both feature male leads who have a notebook/diary that can allow them to control fate
Two supernatural animes that feature:
- Loner teen boy who comes across as a snob to others holding the fate of others in his hands
- His 'diary' is something supernatural and he dare not lose it
- Blind loyal fangirls also feature in both
- Deceitful gods
Mirai Nikki = Death Note with a middle schooler. There's something about the feel of the two shows that's the same, as well as the animation of the OP (first here to second in DN). Yuno is like a badass yandere Misamisa, and Yuki doesn't (so far?) have Light's... questionable morals. Like... he tried to 'use' Yuno, but that kind of failed. =3=; And there's police, and 'diary that predicts the future' is eerily similar to 'notebook that causes the future death of people'.
Death note involves a journal/dairy that allows a person to kill (predict the death) of an individual. This is a psychological suspense anime as well.
Both have similar plot which involves future events. But nowhere a match. Its an insult to compare this to deathnote. But it is watchable due to artwork and fast paced pointless plot.
Mirai Nikki ,this anime remind me of the Great Death Note :Notes,Killing, god and a dream of being the new god, serial killers, smart detective ,and the girl love boy in a crazy way
Notepad decisive about life and death, the diary determinant for life and death, who cares? Also for using both of these notebooks thinking is necessary.
They are both really good psychological thrillers.
both have serial murders .
both have loner main character.
both have god / death gods.
both have woman obsessed with main character .
both have main character using the woman .
both have“text-tool” used to kill or murder.
both have few characters who are only visible to a few .
both the main characters are bored with the world .
both main character go to school.
both have some sort of diary and has power to predict the future/kill.
both have many genre in common Mystery, Supernatural, Psychological, Thriller.
both have detectives , police and serial murders .
both anime have the power to kill and to change the world.
both the main characters are bored with the world and they are drawn to interesting game or world.
foretelling future deaths with a common object
Both give an extremely similar feeling, even though Mirai Nikki is OBVIOUSLY the superior one.
Both anime give off the same kind of feeling and are full of suspense. The main female characters are pretty similar since they are both crazy in love with the main male character and will do anything he tells her to. Both main male characters, with the help of the main female characters, are competing against a group of people to try to find out the other's identity first.
They both have items in which they use to hunt people or kill people
Both are about dangerous 'games' in which characters must act as detectives and race against time.
Mirai Nikki and Death Note share some similarities with their supernatural elements. In both series, there is a god who makes the rules for the participants. Moreover, both series involve diaries that have to do with fate. Death Note is more on the strategic side while Mirai Nikki is more on the psychological side. Both are recommended for people who enjoy thrillers.
Mirai nikki, death note, mirai nikki, death note. Characters in both animes have close "perimeters" with death, deals with death, and include notes that literally have the supernatural powers to prognosticate death.
They're similar in regards to the entire 'NoteBook of Death/Crappy Blackberry Of Death' figure. However, the storyline, plotholes, suspense .. I can't begin to explain the details of such a revolutionary anime. Broke my #1 instantly!
Psychological thriller with teenagers gaining supernatural items.
they both focus on the cat and mouse game, the one who finds out the others identety dies. They both have great stradigy and tactics. antoher thing thats simular is that it's both really suspence, you know that addiction of needing to know whats going to happen next.
Both animes are psychological thrillers that involve some supernatural item and have several plot twists and insane characters. Mirai Nikki is more action oriented while Death Note is more of strategy than fighting.
Psychological thrillers with a lot of mystery, death, and competition for godly power.
they have a special notes and they both can change a lot of fates by their notes
Both Anime Have Similarities
-Loner Main Character
-Loyal Fangirls
-Strategic Battles
-Teenage Protagonist
Both series are horror/mystery, both have objects that let them change the future.Death Notes strong main charcther does everything on his own to survive while in Mirai Nikkis weak main charcther has to rely on other people to survive.
-They are both about a death game.
-Have tools to help kill people
-Strategic
both are psychological battles with the main characters attempting to become god, also they are both awesome !!
Another Masterpiece that I loved a lot. The relationships are kind of similar here, so if you liked Mirai Nikki with Yuno and Yuuki, then you shoud for sure check this one out ^_^
both are talk about note , and same action
Both have a clever plot and are captivating. They also both deal with death and the quest to become a god.
Both have a dar/phycological genre and they both have amazing plots. Though with Mirai Nikki there is less gay moments and more wierd inapropriet moments.....hurray.....
both about power given to them by a powerful being, both about writing in a diary of sorts, and both about police trying to find the 10 diary users. the police officer with the diary reminds me of L
Thrillers with several similarities. The main protagonist and his used girl admirer try to achieve their goal by killing people thanks to an item given by a god and so they get into trouble and have to make a strategy to run away from it. In MN, Yukiteru sees some kind of future that can be changed while in DN Light writes the future of people that he decides to kill. Light supposedly makes good decisions while Yukki doesn't but it's compensated by his admirer Yuno who has that ability. Another interesting point is how L from DN trying to discover/prove the real identity of Kira to succeed is similar to how ones try to discover the real identity of the others in MN to win. "Becoming God" is present in both shows.
Death Note asks the question 'What would you do if you were given free license to kill by simply writing your desire in a notebook?'
Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) asks the question 'What would you do if a god gave you (and others) powers of foresight and promised that the last one standing would take over his place as god?'
Both shows have a competition among people granted supernatural powers who must use their wits if they want to survive. They also provide a dark plot with a few twists and pose philosophical questions about the justifications of murder for a noble goal. The main characters find themselves taking advantage of crazy and obsessed girlfriends. The primary, but notable difference between the two is the vast difference in the protagonists. Light is outgoing, brilliant, and set on molding a new world with the blood of criminals. Yuki is shy, at first glance is rather unremarkable, and spends most of his time trying in vain to avoid danger. They are indeed nothing alike. It is Yuki's obsessive sidekick Yuno who more closely resembles Light in deeds, wits, and sheer bravado.
