Kan Gao, a director and composer at Freebird Games, has announced via his YouTube channel that his game To the Moon will get an anime movie. It will be a collaborative project between Japan and China. More information will be revealed later via the project's official anime Twitter.

To the Moon is an indie Adventure RPG that has been launched via Microsoft Windows on November 2011, and later released via Linux, Android, Mac OS, and iOS. Freebird Games describes the premise as "two doctors traversing through the memories of a dying man to fulfill his last wish."

I'm so hyped and scared at the same time. I adore this game so much! But oml, I hope this new anime will do the story justice as the game. It'll be heartbreaking if this anime doesn't do well, I really hope this will be great!

for the people saying "first rpg maker game adaptation" you do realize that "Angels of Death" is an RPG maker Horror game and is having an anime adaptation airing next season right?

I remember watching a playthrough of this game on Youtube a couple of years ago and I still remember how strong and powerful the whole story was. Plus, the ost also pretty good too. =)

So to see this game getting an anime movie adaptation is a surprise, but a very good one at that. I'm really looking forward to it. ^_^

Never played the game, but apparently it's really good, so I'm counting for great anime adaptation :> We'll see, I guess.

Honestly this made me replay the game.

The game gives people so many good directorial cues and so much to work with in terms of a movie adaptation that you'd have to be a fool to mess it up. I can see why it would make good movie material.

Never played the game myself but I've heard its pretty damn good. Hope it does well, the idea of an independent game getting adapted into an anime sounds pretty dope and maybe this could be the impetus for more to be adapted in the future.

By no means the best game I played in that "bittersweet" realm of adventure games (Syberia has a very similar story and is told better with more in-depth worldbuilding and suspension of disbelief) and the soundtrack is overhyped (the compositions are good, the production is not) but it's still exciting.

God I love this game, definitely watching this when it airs.

I'd love it if they used Everything's Alright for the ED of the anime. Such a good song from an overall beautiful soundtrack.

Am I the only person who's never heard of this? Of all games out there, this seems like such a random one to get an anime adaptation. But I have no idea what it's about so it could be good.

I think, even fans of the game didn't expect this news.
Game is really great and story is fitting to movie format.I'll think, that live-adaptation would be more possible, but things turned out that way, huh. I wonder how popular To the Moon in Asia, because i think game have a bigger fanbase in western audience.
P.S. For me, like 60 percent of how good To the Moon is - OST. Story is good, but music is that makes game really memorable. I hope, film would add some new music, and properly use the game's OST.

It's not in my Top 10 RPG maker games but it's still pretty cool that it's receiving an adaptation after so many years

On another note

The "game" is overrated as shit, but might turn out to be a watchable movie at least.
