Kan Gao, a director and composer at Freebird Games, has announced via his YouTube channel that his game To the Moon will get an anime movie. It will be a collaborative project between Japan and China. More information will be revealed later via the project's official anime Twitter.

To the Moon is an indie Adventure RPG that has been launched via Microsoft Windows on November 2011, and later released via Linux, Android, Mac OS, and iOS. Freebird Games describes the premise as "two doctors traversing through the memories of a dying man to fulfill his last wish."

This game is incredible, incredibly lovable main characters with a heart wrenching story. Incredibly weird announcement/unexpected, but welcome!

Hope it is not CGI.

I can't believe it...
I can't lie, I have rather high expectations - especially when it comes to music.
I'm watching anime since 2012. I also play games, sometimes.

Don't bother me if you want to 'become friends' or things like that.
It's tiresome. I know you just want to collect some meaningless numbers.

Ahhh, the story... No... just the overall atmosphere showed in the series kinda reminds me of Violet Evergarden... Well, you know, the dramatic tone of it...

Video from the creator :

Infos from the official press release :

-It will be a collaborative project between Japan (main production) and China (main funding).

-First tier Japanese animation production companies are aboard (specifics to be announced in the coming future).

-The film project was made possible in partnership with Beijing's Ultron Event Horizon, whose CEO, Danyang Zhao, was responsible for bringing the animated film "Your Name" to China.

-Significant budget for the project has been cleared (quoted as somewhere above the budget for the production of Your Name, for reference).

-The original creator of To the Moon, Kan Gao, will play a part in the script editing/advising process.

WHAT

I thought that it would make a good anime when I played the game, but I didn't think it was even remotely possilble...

If they make this right this could be a masterpiece.

Man, I just commented here for this news because never in my wildest dreams I thought this would happen. I always thought that an anime adaptation was next to impossible, so in my mind I would always conjure a 'fictional' trailer when I play the OST (which is incredibly good, BTW).

Now, I have to admit, my expectations are running high, but from what I've heard, the adaptation will be in good hands. I do hope the OST will be retained, as well as bringing Laura Shigihara back for the theme song.

"Have you ever dreamed of going to the moon?"- Johnny (To the Moon)

I am hyping this movie!!! I don't regaularly hype, but this movie is worth hyping about! Based on a series with two full games and one interlude game using a beautiful concept.

Help people relive and rewrite their memories before their death.

The gameplay is fundamentally simple but the presentation of narrative, sprite art, and music scores are genius. Highly recommend watching this movie when it releases. If you wish, try the demo or play the games on Steam. Finally, the director is Canadian game designer Kan Gao. The hype is real. To the Moon website

Synopsis: Sigmund Corp. uses a technology that can create artificial memories. They offer this as a "wish fulfillment" service to people on their death beds. Since these artificial memories conflict with the patient's real memories, the procedure is only legal to do on people without much time left to live.

Sigmund Corp. employees Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts are tasked with fulfilling the lifelong dream of the dying Johnny Wyles. Johnny wants to go to the moon, although he doesn't know why.

50% of the profit made from this multi-award winning game went to the Charity for Autism. :)

Really, really looking forward to it. Now hoping that a renowned studio with a capable director/scriptwriter adapts this. If done right, just by reading the thousands of gamers' appreciations in Steam, youtube channel, etc. this could really turn out to be an anime masterpiece.

Words cannot express how much of a masterpiece this story is. I can testify that if this adaptation handled correctly, we could potentially have one of the greatest Animated Films to have EVER been created of all time surpassing the likes of Your Name and Spirited Away.

Didn’t see this one coming. I never thought that there would’ve been any interest in producing a movie from the game. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the game and I was plugging away at it until daybreak at least once. Certainly will be most interested in seeing the film adaptation. And as someone else said, will have plenty of tissues on hand when I watch it.

Best news of the year up to now! It is my favorite game and I really didn't expect this, but I welcome the surprise! The game is short too, so I can hope for a good adaptation without being worried for the pacing. I can't wait to put it in my favorites once I see it :D (Yes, I do have such great expectations!)

Also, with this much attention, I hope the next game will come sooner than the 6 years the 2nd one took >.< I can't wait to see what happens!

DAAAMN I was always under the impression that this game could be the blueprint for a great adaptation, never thought someone would actually do it tho. If they put some real effort and a talented director behind this, this could be genuinely great.
