According to the official website, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W was announced to be aired from April.

Hell, a good amount of popular battle shonen main characters who are that age or older are voiced by women too (Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Gon, Edward Elric, etc).

Its just a Japanese thing.

I see people make this point quite often as if it were a powerful "gotcha" argument. So alright, what if the roles were reversed? Then it wouldn't be the same show. You can't just change a character's gender (while retaining an identical target audience) and pretend that's not a very significant change that impacts a viewer's experience and potentially clashes with their expectations.

Most people are going to have some character traits they find endearing from one sex but less so, or not at all, from another. So a romcom with a male protagonist will inherently be a different experience from a romcom with a female protagonist.

I'm certainly sensitive to gender equality and all that in real life (more than many, I'd wager), and I've disliked plenty of anime for shoehorning female characters into weak, helpless "damsel in distress" roles, so it's not like I'm saying it's something I ignore. But it's much more complicated than implying that character genders ought to be an interchangeable trait with no consequences on an audience's viewing experience.

(For the record, yeah I dropped Nyaruko primarily though not exclusively because of Mahiro. And yes I would have liked him better if he were a girl, but then we'd have a different show on our hands, as I've explained.)

Gotta agree with this. I have no problem with him "standing up for himself" or using the fork on Nyaruko. But Mahiro just made me dislike the show. I loved Nyaruko herself, the humor, the references and yuri moments etc. but everytime Mahiro talked it just took me out of it. I just really dislike his voice, I know females often voice boys, but they're in highschool for gods sake, Mahiro's voice should sound like his best friends...

I think it'd be interesting to see a type moon version of nyaruko-san - but i'm fairly sure (that is, terrified) urobuchi would make lovecraft look like dr seuss

It doesn't help he is also surrounded by two other beings like this - respect for still being sane.

So he's fine normal guy who tries to deal with this situation and any other character wouldn't fit here to well.

but ppl seem to forget that nyanko and co. are fricken MONSTERS!!!
and i like how mahiro is, finally a character standing up for himself. though even with that, i myself did find his attitude annoying at times.

Monsters or not, they're hot.

It seems I'm not the only one who thinks Mahiro is incorrigible.

Hopefully he is a little nicer in season 2. I'm sure Nyaruko will be charming as always.
