If they're going to release the titles all on one BD like they've started doing then I don't care. Also would help if they'd change their freaken subtitle typesetting. |

Sorry but can someone explain to me how licensing works. Is it mainly to gain the rights to distribute anime to other demographics by means of the Internet (Crunchyroll and Funimation) and by DVD and BR? |

With licensing, what they mean here is rights for home video distribution and the like. Companies can also get streaming rights, of course, but streaming-only rights are reserved for the simlulcast thread similar to this one. (CrunchyRoll is always streaming-only. More often than not, FUNi starts off with just streaming rights and decides later whether to obtain home video rights, though that isn't always the case.) |

People, do you think we should add Crunchyroll's acquisition of Cardaptor Sakura to this list? Source: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2014/otakon/crunchyroll/.77464 Though I guess I really shouldn't add it to the thread since it's streaming rights-only by the looks of it. NIS has the home video license. |

xHoneythief said: Can a listing on the classification board's website qualify as a source? A Certain Scientific Railgun S has been listed with Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Australia as the applicant (they licensed Index and the first season of Railgun). They barely advertise their anime releases, so it's difficult to find a source with an announcement directly from them. http://www.classification.gov.au/Pages/View.aspx?sid=fa1rGrUMMfcZrqwhXGoCzQ%253d%253d&ncdctx=zvWcMLGDpvmQcwDaMZdIgN%2biayF5i0lxhzlEijJKZD5qawLmVA0tWHsHBG9lWpXU It does. They've licensed stuff for Australia in the past (as you've mentioned yourself). They're just not as visible as the more mainstream outfits. Heck I couldn't even find a website for them. In fact, someone asked them for the URL to their website on their Facebook page. Also, not sure about this one - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-09-27/aniplex-usa-adds-sword-art-online-extra-edition-silver-spoon-2-on-home-video/.79276 Should we add SAO Extra Edition to the list? To the best of my knowledge, nobody's licensed it yet. (Note that it's a special) Thoughts? Edit: The next quarter's license thread is up (here) but this thread will remain unlocked until October 1 to accommodate last minute news. |
