| Because western cartoons already fill the "everyone is hideous" niche. I think anime taking a different approach to character design is one of its fundamental appeals, since I like seeing things that are cute or beautiful. |

The same reason why "Kelly McGillis" wasn't casted for the "Top Gun" reboot movie "Top Gun: Maverick". It's due to demographics. "Kelly McGillis" simply wasn't attractive enough anymore to play the roll of "Charlie" in the "Top Gun" franchise. | because anime/tv is a visual medium, when you are watching something, you want it to be pleasing to the eyes. I read a lot of books, and there are a lot of characters that are described as being super ugly in them, and every single time it gets any kind of tv/movie adaptation, the one thing you can guarantee is that they will always pretty up the ugly characters. (They may not be super models, but they will always be way less ugly then they are supposed to be) |

| most anime characters are good looking in general. BUT. I agree, we need shows with ugly characters in general. I recently watched monster, and god was such a breath of fresh air. most characters were actually average with few being extra good or ugly looking. |

| From the standpoint of business, it won’t sell at all. Looking at it psychologically, under some conditions, that character is YOU. Suppose to represent you in some way. This method of work has been used long ago in fashion and commercials before anime. |

| Who wants to watch a show where all of the characters look ugly. Designs have to be good to pull people in as well and ugly designs unless part of a character can't really pull people in all that much compared to hot/cute/attractive men and women. |
