No, you can like anime no matter how old you are. One of my relatives is an anime fan who is in his forties or fifties. |

I mean here's a simple test. Who's the oldest manga author you know? If you can write manga well into your 60's and beyond I would have to imagine you can equally as well consume it. Now the pessimists might say writing and consuming are not the same, one is voluntary the other is contingent on getting paid, but still I would say writing manga is such a grueling job, no way anyone would stick with it if they weren't passionate about it, just look at togashi for example. |

Honestly, it depends. Maybe it often follow with age but it depends on the individual whether they keep a interest in anime or not. But no, there isn't an age limit, I'm personally happy to see elder adults still having fun with anime and its community. |

There is a club on this site called MAL: The Later Years, all its members (more than 600) over 30. I am sure there are hundreds of MAL users over 40 or 50 and a few even over 60. |

I'm not over 40 myself, but I can't really imagine myself not watching anime anymore when I get older, even if it is just less. Also I've seen quite a few people on this site who say they are over 40. |

There isn't an age limit. I was at my local grocery store one time talking to a 50 year old fella about Cowboy Bebop. Will I like anime 'til the day I croak? I would like for that to be the case. As long as it brings me joy and entertains me I see no reason to stop |

16 years old is the limit, after that, you should seek professional help. |
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time. Watch more movies, please. Perhaps, this is hell. |

Nu, I don't think there is. I know plenty of adults doing stupid video reactions to very hiped shows in recent years + anime is becoming a big thing just recently so there might be more teens but an adult can definitely watch some weeb shit if that's the kind of thing they like |
MAL is the perfect place to shit talk about people's opinions. |

Depends on what you watch. There are a few animes targeted for adults, but most are stuck in high schools... |

I used to treat anime as something childish. At the same time I didn't want to be a total 'boomer' who couldn't keep up with all the memes so I asked some discord friends to recommend me a few titles. And then it happened. I discovered that it's just another type of media and while it sometimes can take some time to find something that appeals to you, you will eventually find it. Apart from watching anime i also started reading visual novels. God, I even held my very first prelection about symbolism and themes in Madoka Magica recently and while it was far from perfect, now I know what needs to be fixed and I'm sure I'm gonna present it next year at another convention. Believe me - being an introvert + shy is a very VERY bad combo for social interaction but I still did it because I rly enjoyed the series and I thought it was worth it to put in the hours to prepare the presentation and share my passion with others. Did I mention yet that I'm just over 30yo? :D I used to worry about what people think about my newfound hobby but now I don't give a damn. Maybe it won't last very long, maybe I actually will at some point start considering that I'm too old for this but for no I enjoy it while it lasts. You have one life, do what you want, you shouldn't feel ashamed for enjoying the things you like. My very first post here, yay! :D |

I honestly believe that at least for the majority, it has more to do the trends of the time period in which they lived in in terms of availability and popularity rather than the actual individual age. What I mean is that someone who is 40 years-old or older now was not raised in the same world and environment as someone who is 30 now or 25 or 20 or 15 (and those latter groups and any other age groups/brackets would also have such general differences between themselves) or younger. There's no reason to believe that, at least when it comes to a trend like this in terms of media consumption and artistic preferences, that the taste prevalent among today's 40 or 40+ year-olds will be those of tomorrow's 40+ year olds. Looking at even older ages, people often use this to look at, say, 60 or 70 year-olds of today and assume that the tastes and preferences of the majority of the current youngest generation will match those of today's 60 and 70 year-olds when they themselves turn 60 or 70 one day, but why would it? To me it's faulty logic. Say you are 14 or 17 or 22 now. Do you really think you grew up in the same world as a 45 year-old or 65 year-old who is that age currently? So that you will be closer to being like them than just a physically older version of who you yourself already are right now? Then there is the fact that even within the same generations and exact identical ages, some people remain more loyal to and reflective of their innate tendencies and interests throughout life, or for an extended and lengthy part of it, than emulating a preconceived stereotypical role associated with their biological age. A lot of the people who don't like or even know much, if anything about, certain forms of media which exist today, aren't that way because the calendar flipped over and they arrived at an arbitrary numerical age. They are that way because when they were your age, it wasn't even a popular phenomenon or easily and reasonably accessible. Now it is, so why would you be like them when you get older? People talk like the attitudes and tastes of today's 40 or 50 or 60 year-olds are fixed in time and will apply to all who turn that age. |

I don't think there is. Anime is so diverse that there are shows out there someone of any age could enjoy. One of my friends on the internet is a truck driver in his sixties, and he watches anime. I was surprised at first that he brought that up, but really I guess it isn't so surprising. |

Henrique-Senpai said: I've been thinking and I don't think I personally know anyone over 40 who likes anime, do people stop liking it at a certain age at some point in life? How old is the oldest person who likes anime that you know, and do you think you'll like it forever? not counting the Japanese of course. It's also likely that you could just not know a large quantity of friends who are over 40 who have ever been into anime in the 1st place. Everyone I know who I grew up with in the early 90s that was into Anime in the west, likely still watches Anime to this day. But once we reach 50 it's all over and we all have to stop watching Anime by force. It's kind of a "Logan's Run (1976)" situation that once you reach a certain age people in the west are automatically coerced to stop watching anime to help prevent the overpopulation of western Anime fandom. If you didn't know this already, at birth we are all planted with a chip inside us that will trigger on our 50th birthday letting us know it's time to stop watching Anime for good. "Sandmen" will start actively pursuing you if you don't comply completely restricting a person over 50 to access Anime in the west. A Westerner can try to flee to Japan to get their Anime but only if they can out run the "Sandmen". |

I'm 37, and I still like it as much as I did when I got into it in my early teens. My mom actually just got into anime a couple of years ago. She's 66. I've been watching anime consistently, a few episodes a day, for well over two decades, so it's just a part of my routine at this point. So I could see myself maybe watching less anime someday, but I'm not sure I'd ever stop watching it completely, any more than I'd completely stop watching movies, reading, etc... I think it's less common for people over 40 to like anime because they didn't have the chance to grow up with it, beyond maybe a handful of dubbed anime for kids that aired on TV in their country. If they wanted to see more and really get into it, they had to buy it, choosing from a tiny selection at a local store, if they were even lucky enough to have one that carried anime nearby. And even if someone was interested, it was hard to even know what was out there, because the internet was generally terrible, and finding anything out about new anime was difficult. I remember basically just walking into stores in the late 90s and blindly buying any anime VHS with a cover that I liked, often knowing next to nothing about it beyond the summary on the back. That was the case up until the early 2000s or so, when it became easier to find out about anime as the internet improved and the online fan community grew, and it was possible to acquire anime through IRC and torrents (and even then, someone would have to be more than a casual fan to bother with that). But now we're at the point where a quick search and a few clicks can get someone virtually any anime they want through streaming, so more and more people are getting into it than ever before. I think it also helps that it's become a pretty socially acceptable and normal thing to watch, so the types of people who may have hesitated to get into it years ago (because outside of a few big titles, it was mostly seen as a thing only for kids and/or weird nerds) will be more open to watching it, leading to even more fans, many of whom will stick with it as they get older. tl;dr - Now that anime has been easily accessible for a while, and a huge number of people casually watch it the same way they would watch anything else, I think we'll see more and more older fans as time passes, as the fans who got into anime during the streaming era start to get into their 30s, 40s, and so on. Younger fans will obviously still be here, but I do think there will be a shift toward more older fans. I've already seen it just in my time in the fandom. It used to be that finding anyone into anime over 25ish was really unusual, but now that's totally normal. |

I've seen a few 40+ users here on MAL. The eldest I remember is someone around 60-65. And there are pretty many 30+ millenial fellows here. I started late, when I already was 20. And now I am 32. I don't think I should stop. If you are planning to abandon your hobby after some time, what is the point in spending your time on it in the first place? |

That's like asking is there an age limit to stop liking movies, movies or books. Anime isn't a genre. It's a medium, with content appealing to people of all ages. Besides, there's nothing stopping a 40+ years old from liking an anime meant for other age groups, if the person is open minded enough and if the anime is good, because even a children's anime will appeal to someone older if it's made well. |

theres no age limit to liking anime. many just grow out of it before they become adults because of constantly changing interests. im an adult and i dont really care for it like i used to, but i still enjoy it. the oldest person i know that likes anime is in their 30s, but that doesnt mean anything. like what you want for however long you want |

Should you be able to enjoy Sci-fi as you grow older, or Fantasy, or Romance? Or watch Soccer, Hockey? Or be allowed to paint tabletop minis? An alternative to Anime is trash that is western media industry. So there is not much to choose from. You can find a good/great Japanese Anime where the author had a story to tell or you can watch whatever reboot/remake/recast old movie "Hollywood" is trying to ruin today. For me Anime is just a way of telling a story, same as books, manga, movies and cartoons are. I feel like losing interest in something is completely normal as it happened to me as well. If you lose interest in Anime, probably you'll find something else for yourself. As you grow older you view things from your own perspective, not from some weird societal norms that change every week. |

Nah you can like anime at any age. The reason why there aren't that many anime fans over the age of 40 is because of the time they grew in. If a person was born in the 80s or earlier they probably didn't watch any anime or they did watch some of it, but didn't know that it was anime and just viewed it as cartoons. |

No. There is no age limit to watching anime. I'm not over 40 myself but having watched anime my whole life i just can't see a time where i'd deside to just suddenly stop. In my japanese study group there's many anime fans over 40 too. |

I feel like with how popular anime is right now, there may be a higher chance of seeing more people over 40 watching anime. That is, if they're able to maintain their interest in the medium for that long. I feel like some of the ones who get burnt out on anime quickly are those who go through a craze of watching and adding as many anime as they can to their list. Or those who may be normies and just watch anime because of the popularity. |

It may just be a generation thing too. Like those in their 50s and 60s may have not grown up with anime when they were younger compared to us in our 30s and younger. So you might find the odd older fan who found interest in anime later in life or they grew up with really old and harder to find and watch ones from the 60s and 70s. One day us in our 30s will become 50 and 60s and by then you'll see a lot more fans in these age groups too. |

I met a guy at an anime convention who must have been 60 who recommended me Cat Planet Cuties, which was his favourite anime. I doubt too many people are getting into anime late in life, and it's only been somewhat popular since the 90s or so, but I'm sure in 10-20 years there will be plenty of seniors who love anime. |

Yeah maybe 30, 35? Possibly 60-65.... could also be like 21 or 22 or 23, perhaps 89. Definitely 69, eh actually let's say 70 or 71, also 100-105? 257 or 1083 probably. Late 40's? I'd say 2 years old tbh... or 12 ngl.... 5 months old? Not even born yet maybe... not even CONCEIVED yet sure I guess... eh I'll just bet on 34 or something yeah |

Nah. I don't see many older people watching it, but I've gotten my mom to watch attack on titan, fullmetal, to your eternity, and she liked those. I do think they may be more selective with the ones they'll watch. I can't see any of my older relatives dealing with some anime tropes that people who watch anime find normal. Case in point, my dad couldn't get past episode three of aot because of the inner monologuing Eren was doing lol |

There is no age limit to stop watching anime. Currently. there are fewer adults watching anime than children or teenagers. I believe there are three factors that contribute to the lower rate of adults watching anime: 1. Falling outside the target demographic for anime 2. Improvements in distribution and selection were relatively recent (last thirty years, especially the most recent decade) 3. Lack of awareness stemming from the previous two factors As an adult who enjoys anime, I think I will enjoy fewer shows over the years as more I fall more outside of their target demographic. However, there are a few anime which I think I will continue to find worthwhile even until I die. |

I've honestly never understood when people put age limits on entertainment. Does it bring you happiness? Does it make you smile? Does it make your day more enjoyable? If so, you should be able to enjoy something without other people hassling you over it. Like what you want to like, not what the closed-mindedness of society deems you should. |

There isn't an age limit for liking anime. What I believe is the case for 40+/50+ year olds it's that most didn't grow up watching anime, or if they did there were just "cartoons for kids" in their times. Anime is becoming more and more mainstream with the newer generations and its losing that "for kids" stigma and that's why I think it's going to be a normal thing for 40+ year olds just like it's normal to find superhero/sci fi/Disney/etc fans in that age range nowadays. Some people close to you may watch it and maybe you just don't know. I remember years ago when I was talking about anime with a coworker who was about my age, and another coworker who was 40+ joined saying she was excited the new AoT season that was coming out. I would have never guessed she watched anime! |

I like to think that the older you get, the less anime you watch. You might still like it, but it's not the same. I've known a few mutuals who stopped watching anime after reaching a certain point and the pattern I see tends to be their interest differed at the period of their life. |
