Back in the early 2000's and maybe the 90's, we didn't have complete series collections or even seasons, we had volumes with only 3-5 episodes apiece. What's your opinion on these?

I liked them sort of, but they become cumbersome and take up too much space if you collect them all, especially if it's a long series like Dragon Ball or Yugioh.

There were some good parts, they typically had a ton of extras like art, character bios and random things like music videos. COmplete sets tend to just have the episodes and nothing else. Plus the art on the cover is unique with each one and that's always cool

It's shameful how many of those series released on DVD during that era have never been reissued on Blu-ray and are now out of print.

I do kinda like them but like you mentioned they do take up more space. Also it seems more expensive to buy a whole series like that these days. I do like that you can get parts of a longer series without buying the whole thing at once. The extras are cool too, I wish that they still had more stuff like that.

I never really found them expensive, i guess it depends on the series though. I've found a lot for really cheap and they're pretty common in thrift stores and other used dvd stores...but when you add up the price of getting all of them, it's pretty expensive. (It cost me about 100 bucks to own all 30 yugioh volumes)

I'd like to take this opportunity to date myself by saying that I had some Yu-Gi-Oh! episodes on VHS.

DVDs were for rich people.

Random question but did the yugioh VHS tapes have bonus features after the episodes played? The dvd's had bonus features but were the VHS tapes just the episodes?

I used to have a few tapes like that. They only make sense for episodic shows. I bought and still own a DVD with my favorite Pokemon episode.

I also have a DVD containing the first couple of Viewtiful Joe episodes. It was sent to me for free as a way of advertising the full series. I never got around to buying more, but I really did enjoy what I saw.

Most of the Anime I own are in volumes like these when you are talking about Anime from the 80s and 90s. This is the best way to get the best quality Anime pre-2000 to watch. I wouldn't even bother wasting my time trying to watch anything before 2000 on some streaming site because the quality is subpar at best unless there is some official remastered release where they have magically improved the quality from some original source.

They were stupidly expensive. If it wasn’t for torrents I wouldn’t have gotten into anime.

Wasn't worth it. I'd much rather have a complete collection or at least a complete season than hunt down a handful of episodes at a time. Not that I've collected physical copies of anime in a while. That shit adds up, and I have higher priorities when it comes to collecting things.

It's not like they purposely just wanted to only have 3-5 episodes on a DVD. It was mainly due to current Technology. They could still fit entire seasons of a series on a DVD but at the cost of it's quality. Unlike Blu-ray where you can put up to around 50GB of data on it, A DVD at most could only hold at most 8.5 GB of data. It was the same as when VHS was the popular format where you could put 2 hours of high quality audio/video on one tape or extend the play time up to 4 hours at the drastic cost of the quality.

I hated them, they were expensive an never contained the whole show unless you're willing to spend even more on a box set.

I get that, i just wonder why they didn't just sell box sets from the start like most other series or at least seasons with multiple discs.

Amine wasn't mass produced like it is today. Some series would take 2-5 years to complete from the 80s to the mid 90s. It's not like a production company would always wait especially when dealing with OVAs. Then again we are talking about VHS here too. This trend seemed to continued with DVDs in the early 2000s since It looked like most consumers would put quality over quantity.

I still have "Agent Aika" on VHS (at least the 1st arc). The VHS version is extremely high quality still since I have only played it about 6 times (I still think the VHS version I own is better than the DVD). I ended up buying it on DVD a few years later because I wanted to own the full series. Even as a complete set they still packaged the DVDs in separate disc boxes as if you were buying them separately. As another example when I bought "Najica Blitz Tactics" on DVD around 2002, you could either buy the series as 3 individual DVDs with 4 episodes each or buy the complete collection together if you waited till the Series ended. Either way you still got the series in three discs packaged in 3 individual DVD cases.

When "Cowboy Bebop" was finally licensed for western consumption, Bandai released the series in 6 different discs even when the series ended a few years before. Once they finished publishing the entire series on individual discs, you could buy the entire series together and even then they still had their own disc boxes.

This same trend for "Trigun", "Air Master", "Those Who Hunt Elves", "Tenchi", "Burn Up", "Silent Mobius", etc...

Wdym early 00s? I bought bluray volumes with 3-4 episodes per disc like two years ago. I think it's generally a scam but I bought it to support the creators.

Outdated and obsolete with their taking so much space when you have many of them.

I avoided those, and only bought the "complete collections," but I didn't start buying anime DVDs until the early 2010s. I bought anime laserdiscs before that.

I don't even buy those anymore. It's extremely rare that I buy anime in physical form anymore, as blu-ray is more expensive than DVD, so I pretty much gave up on collecting them.

Anime figures seem like a better investment to me at this point.

I like tracking them down for weird obscure versions of shows I like. I'm currently trying to track down the edited Ocean Dub tapes of Dragon Ball Z since I really like a lot of the Vancouver cast and want to hear more of their take on the characters (Peter Kelamis and Ian James Corlett feel more like adult Goku to me than Schemmel), some edited Yu Yu Hakusho DVDs since I'm curious to see what was changed, and the Uncut Yu-Gi-Oh volumes that were cancelled after 3 releases. I might also want to try and track down some DVDs and tapes of this format from Japan as well for series like Yu-Gi-Oh (season 0) and the main Duel Monsters and GX anime.

I looked at buying an old 80s series. The price was over £4k so I have torrented anime ever since.

I would like to but the ones I watch multiple times but they make is so expensive/impossible to do so.

Here in germany anime still releases like that. Only few series get a complete set. The prices per Vol. are also astonishingly high and tbh mostly not worth it.

I have a few of those and the only reason I bought them was because I wanted the special drama CDs they came with. I don't like physical media overall so don't have much of an opinion about them though.

They're not my favorite. I thought I picked up FMP Fumoffu. I only picked up the first three episodes. They probably would look really nice if you got all the ones in a series though. I don't usully get physical copies of the stuff I watch anyway.

well... for example kiniro mosaic was released this way and the normal way. ofc having 12 special boxes which include 2 episodes on each one is really cool cuz you get a ton of limited merch but the *worse* thing is that you have to pay 72k yens for them

I think they're pretty cool and nowadays they're relatively cheap too. Although I guess they're pretty useless when compared to box sets anyhow. You are kind of left with random parts if you can't find all of the parts.

I forgot how db anime i got on dvd but yeah i got alot not just that but also inyuyasha, naruto, death note and some transformers unicron trilogy dvds as well too and also a bit of yu gi oh if we're going to do @Fario-P padnering here that i found at thrift stores.

And it doesn't just end there, i own lot of shonen jump manga and shojo beat from thrift stores i found and yep, i do got a few naruto and dbz games as well too and also some fma games as well too from the 2000s i found at second hand places as well too. The Bleach Games on the ds i really wanna try out since i still have yet to try them and the gundam games are pretty addicting if you grew up with mecha like i have.

2000s shonen/shojo hits pretty hard love that period alot and its fun collecting for that area imo.
