Hmm ... i do wonder why is it always the rape ones that always get all the attention in BL world. From what i was told and actually seen there are more better ones to get movies but they simply dont. Shame that this kind of toxic stereotype "brand" is what's getting the hype and attention. Thats what the community is all after i guess. |

I'm not the biggest fan of it and found it just "fine", but I'll probably watch it just to see what will happen between them seeing as their relationship got a bit better towards the end. But I have seen/read BL stuff that was much worse than that, so eh, worth a try. |

Ehh, been trying to get into this series before but the blantant romanticizing rape turn me off. Good for the one who can enjoyed the usual yaoi trope though. Wish far more good BL got adapted in the future. I hope they adapted Cherry Magic into anime with all the success the Live action drama it get recently..guess that asking too much huh |

Why? Why only such BLs get adaptations? At least not the next season of Sekaiichi (molestation in 3rd episode, harassment) or Junjou (molestation in 1st episode with abusive relationships). But still, bad as always. Bl, as always, kills my faith in people and my psychic state. |

Why can't you make adaptations of something good like Koimonogatari, Hana nomi zo Shiru? Why this? This genre is cursed because apart from Given, Doukyuusei (Movie), Umibe no Étranger there is nothing else normal. God ...... |

Yes, women in japan are allowed to enjoy things thats produced and consumed mainly for them. Take your ethnocentrism elsewhere because anime isn't going to be dictated by western standards of morality. I for one am excited to see what Tatsuwa has in store for the movie. Its going to be his first film ever despite being in the industry for a long time. |

I thought Umibe no Etranger was better because they did it without coercion and we got to see some "relatable" problems like when Shun's parents knew that Shun is gay or because of the trauma he had, Shun felt guilty when Mio likes him even though Mio is someone who likes girls.. the movie cuts many important scenes from the manga, maybe that's the reason why the movie seems childish and unrealistic. But the sequel, Harukaze no Etranger, is better than Umibe no Etranger.. I think. Maybe you want to try to read it? :D |

You're so right and I think (almost) the same as you, but to be clear, in the DakaIchi anime, literally rape doesn't happen. I am not talking about censor or cuts, the dialogues are changed and the scenes are readjusted, there is no rape and their first time in consensual. There are many super good BL stories that deserve to be adapted, but it must be understood that making anime is expensive, only very popular titles manage to have an anime, which in the end (and in general), is advertising for the manga.BL animation is still a field that is just beginning to be explored, we must understand that these titles will be the keys that will open the doors to new and more varied adaptations. Normally I am against changing the story from the original source, but how reject a so favorable change? I decided to embrace DakaIchi anime because the animation staff did a wonderful, no, SPLENDID job improving the original story and proving that DakaIchi's story didn't need a rape... LOT OF BL´S DON'T NEED RAPES...*sigh*. Then, Ironically DakaIchi anime became one of the healthiest BLs out there. I hope you can give DakaIchi (anime) another chance! :D |

Asking for consent no matter how small it is and respecting ur partner boundaries is the healthiest relationship one for me. And this couple from this series doesnt have it. Theres far more healthiest BLs story out there than this that still havent been adapted yet imo. |

Seiya said: Umibe no Etranger was very childish and unrealistic, though. Umibe is much more realistic and grounded than most of the BLs out there. It is not perfect, but it is definitely in the same ranks if not higher as Given and Doukyuusei. Personally, both shows are not as good as Umibe, but lots people don't see it this way. ++++ I dropped this series back when the TV series was airing, it didn't really have anything going for it. But if this arc is better, I can give it a try. All the non-consent critiques still apply though. |

Seiya said: I've read through that, but I don't think you understand what I was trying to say. When I said that it wasn't "realistic," I meant that Shun and Mio act like a couple of 5-year olds, even when they're in their 20s. Adults don't act like Shun and Mio. They didn't fall in love like real people do. If you're not male, then I don't expect you to understand what it's like for a male to be in love. People fall in love in all sorts of ways, just because you think one way is immature another isn't doesn't mean anything to the story. Adults can act in all sorts of ways too. The key is being able to critically analyze the film and see if it can have a nuanced and layered portrayal of their relationship. I don't think it was perfect by any stretch, but it was not "childish" or "unrealistic". |

Seiya said: You didn't state your gender, so I'm guessing that you're not male. I'm not trying to be ignorant or anything, but please don't act like you know what it's like to be a guy. And you shouldn't act like your personal experience makes you all knowing when it comes to relationships, even if it is just between male-to-male relationships. You cannot be the arbiter for everyone else's experience and interactions. Not to mention, there is something called allyship. Being able to understand and empathetic without being a member of a community. If you think just because someone is or is not a member of a community, that automatically disqualifies them from participating in meaningful discussions, then you are wrong as you erase decades of LGBTQIA history. In addition, this is literary critique we are talking about here, not your or any other men's experiences. For example, Detective Conan (I also mentioned in my thought piece) is extremely realistic and grounded, but that is not based on my own experience or my identity or gender or whatever. It is based on analyzing the content in the show. That's what I did in the thought piece, analyze the show. Finally, I did state my gender in the thought piece. Since you claimed that you read the thought piece but still says you don't know my gender, then I can only imagine you didn't care to read and do not want to engage in a proper conversation about Umibe to start with. So I will stop the conversation then. |
