A television anime adaptation of Asato Asato's sci-fi action light novel series 86 (Eighty Six) was announced during a livestream event commemorating the first year anniversary of Kadokawa's light novel recommendation website Kimirano on Sunday.

Synopsis
The Republic of San Magnolia.

For a long time, this country has been besieged by its neighbor, the Giadian Empire, which created a series of unmanned drones called the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties—or at least, that's what the government claims.

In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the "nonexistent" Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the "unmanned" weapons into battle...

Shinn directs the actions of a detachment of young Eighty-Sixers while on the battlefield. Lena is a "handler" who commands the detachment from the remote rear with the help of special communication.

The farewell story of the severe and sad struggle of these two begins! (Source: MU, Yen Press; edited)

Dengeki Bunko began printing the military-themed novel series in February 2017. The beginning section of each volume and side stories are serialized in Dengeki Bunko Magazine. The imprint also publishes the side stories on the Kakuyomu website.

Shirabi (Musaigen no Phantom World, Ryuuou no Oshigoto!) is drawing the illustrations, with I-IV (Aldnoah.Zero, Re:Creators) credited for mechanical design. Kadokawa shipped the seventh volume on September 10 last year, with the eighth volume scheduled for release in May. 86 has a cumulative 750,000 copies of its volumes in circulation.

A manga adaptation by Motoki Yoshihara has been serialized in Young Gangan since February 2018. Square Enix published the second compiled volume last year on September 10. Suzume Somemiya is launching a new manga adaptation titled Gakuen 86 (Academy 86) in Monthly Comic Alive magazine.

Yen Press licensed the light novel in English in July 2018 and published the third volume on November 19. The fourth volume is scheduled for a March 31 release. The novel has also been localized in Mandarin by Kadokawa Taiwan and in Korean by Yeongsang Chulpan Media.

86 won the Grand Prize at the 23rd Dengeki Novel Awards in 2016 and placed second and fifth in the 2018 and 2019 editions of Takarajimasha's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! Rankings, respectively.

This is something you know would get anime since day 1. Still need to read more than prologue though.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

I was kind of hoping for a movie adaptation of volume 1. I feel that would have fit better with the narrative than a TV adaptation.
But oh well, I don't mind so long as the anime is faithful to the source. And volume 2 onwards fits that of a TV anime format, so I guess that is favourable.

In the volumes following the first, predominantly the third, the perspective and location jumps around a lot during segments of the story. Some, when cutting out the description that comes with a light novel, will likely only make up a 5-10 second scene, only for another scene of similar length to follow afterwards. I hope the cinematography in the anime is good, especially during battle animation.

This novel's writing (setting and characterization especially) in general is exceptional. So a seasonal adaptation that tackles volume 1-3 is pretty ideal.

Given the mecha-heavy setting, I pray a company that excels sci-fi genre can produce this. Production IG, Sunrise, etc...

I read the first 3 volumes, about 50 days ago and loved it. I initially thought it's a new novel, then later found out Volume 1 was released in 2017, and official Japanese LN is at Volume 7, I thought it really deserves an anime adaptation, and now it's here. Looking forward to the anime adaptation and Vol 4 release ( 24 or 25th of March )

The premise intrigues me if I can be quite honest.

I actually saw illustrations when it comes to this LN back in zerochan I believe, so it shocked me when I saw this being announced for an anime adaptation and then recognizing the artstyle.

I do wish for the best for this product, and who knows maybe it'll turn out well.

To those asking whether this is one of those generic harem light novel, believe me, it's FAR from it. If this project gets a good staff behind it, this one is practically GUARANTEED an amazing adaptation. For those weary, I encourage you strongly to check it out and read the light novels. Definitely one of the best light novel series out right now, for sure, and I can't wait for this!

This is the first time I hear of this novel but everyone seems to know about this work and seems to have a very good reputation, I hope it is true and not another one of those pandering otaku bait with a pretentious history.

ohh i was planning on reading this after stumbling across it since it seems like it's actually good only read a bit of the prologue

not surprised this got greenlight mainly because the amount of LN trash that gets spit out something decent will end up getting on the big screen regardless

now the question is remain ignorant as anime only or become annoyed if it's a butchered adaptation as someones that read the LN most likely the former since i'm still trying to get through testament

Well, I hope this LN doesn´t follow the trend of a few people saying is amazing and then turning out to be a huge disappointment. It happened with Mahouka, then Classroom of the Elite, ToAru and so on...

It´s A-1, so I hope they can adapt it well.

Even if an adaptation is awful, you can get a pretty good grasp of the author's approach in the series, and CoE is a very good example of the word "pretentious". The characters, setup, dialogues and specially the progagonist are so edgy and tryhard with their pseudo psichological thoughts and behavior than most of them look straight up chuuni, instead or being "badass" or "cool". The protagonist who looks like he doesn't care about anything is a gary stu that unlike Tatsuya (the other beloved LN protagonist alongside Kirito) just makes you think that the guy is a loser for trying too hard to be mysterious and intelligent. And no, you don't need to read an entire LN to understand the series itself feels like something wrote by an angry teenager.

the MC and many other characters in the light novel are different from the anime + there is much more dialogues and much more understandings to the characters. in other word the anime is so rushed and trying so hard to make the MC look edgy and the other characters like horikita (female MC) in the anime in the final episode she seems to star liking the MC but ofc all of that is bullshit in order to make the anime morre populair because guys like badass and waifus so if you are interested i recommand reading the light novel it s worth and much better. and by the way majority of l the students in the shcool are weirdos and you will know why if you read the LN
