I think Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor is the way to go, it pretty much spits in the face of any commonly held misconceptions about anime. It's gritty and exciting without being an action show.

If you think he'd enjoy watching an average joe go to hell and back in the world of underground gambling, you should give it a shot.

Kaiji is fantastic. The anxiety that series causes is far better than most psychological shows.

Ishuzoku Reviewers. It's a fun, educational show that helps you understand that people have different preferences in life. I recommend that you look nothing up about this show and watch it with your dad right away.

You might get banned from watching anime ever again but at least your dad will know anime is definitely not cartoons for kids :)

Hope this helps!

Lmao he will get ban for sure 100% no question ask

There's (at the very least on a superficial level) a youthful/childish element in all anime no matter how adult the story or themes covered. That's perfectly compatible with the idea that plenty of anime is geared to adults, but it's not so easy for people insecure about acting their age to accept that.

I have to disagree; there's nothing 'childish' about shows like Monster or Perfect Blue or Paranoia Agent at all.

Cartoons are for kids. Anime are for angsty teenagers, no point trying to convert him by force.

I can see Monster and Cowboy Bebop being closer to what is traditionally "adult".

For somewhat adult slice of life I'd recommend Planetes (more childish the first 8 eps).

For sports I personally recommend Hajime no Ippo but it might be too long, then Ping Pong the animation which is short and to the point.

If you want something more serious and historical but with a fair share of comedy and implied copulation: Hyouge Mono. No superpowers, implied war but no fights, politics, different philosophies clashing and the main character is pretty old so your father might relate/empathize with him.

I would really recommend death Note or Monster. It is the gateway anime I recommend to those that start arguing with me that anime is for kids. If after seeing those two, his mind does not change, I am pretty sure nothing is going to change their mind.

Death Note can appeal to a pretty wide audience and I am sure your dad would love it.

Yeah like I did with my uncle and he fudging hated it lol. The show literally feels like filler for multiple episodes with pretty terrible comedy and pretty annoying fanservice.

For your one example I know many people who'd feel differently, hell I'm not alone on this thread. Also, it's not even heavily reliant on comedy. It has it here and there but it's not a focal point so I have no reason why it's tagged on here as comedy, shit is a loosely used tag. And annoying fanservice? I mean ya Faye dresses scantily, but it's not annoying, she just does it to fit in her "bad bitch persona". The reason why a lot of western adults like it is because of the over arching themes, the overall western feel of the show, the ost and the non-anime stereotypical characters except maybe Ed.

I know most people feel differently. Just not a show for me or pretty much anyone I recommended it too lol. And the show is heavily comedy focused lol. It is partially a parody show making fun of western tropes. I don't mind the way she dresses but when the show finally gets serious I don't need bullets flying past her to make her boobs jiggle. It takes me out of a serious situation hence why I consider it to have quite a bit of comedy.

I would go with something in a genre your dad likes, and a movie. Im not sure how serious he is about giving it a try, so I wouldnt exactly recommend some long shows, thats why a movie is better. everyone is used to the format and you usually watch them till they are over.

For those reasons its hard to give one answer. I can see someone getting turned away from Death Note by the supernatural elements, and definitely when bomdage scene starts. Monster is probably too long, same reason why Attack on Titan wouldnt work. Though AoT is decent enough if you seek action and violence as a form for mature content.

Someone here said Planetes and thats a great idea though it takes time to pick up and its more likely someone stops after 3 or 4 episodes then just stops in the middle of a movie.

Jin Roh, Ghost in the Shell. Maybe the original gundam movies if hes into sci fi.

TL;DR Guys we got one shot. An Anime that would make him say...Woooo, that's some crazyassshit boy! x) Also remember its my 56 year old dad, not me you have to recommend.

It's Corona time. I am locked at home all day... tbh I am enjoying myself more than usual... completing my so long due PTW list. But the problem is My Dad. He's at home all time too. Now he mostly keeps to his own business...that is...until he sees me watching Anime. He be like, What you watching..hunn? Kids watch that... This isn't the first time though, he's been nagging me for years but now it's time I do something about it. So I thought why not ask him to watch one and then make comments. Its not like he got some imp stuff to do during quarantine anyway¯\_(ツ)_/¯. That's where I need you guys. Here are some HINTS:
He's not into superpower kinda stuff but that's all on my Watched Anime List. I think slice of life would be best way to go or may be sports. Movies would be the best option but all I know are teen romantic ones. Also it would be hard to convince him to watch Anime let alone subbed... so preferably English dubbed.
The best I could come up with was Haikyuu! I mean this could easily be a real story which is just animated. But I am open to any kinda suggestion (please no hentai though, be considerate)

Honestly it depends on what kinds of shows your dad is into. I got my family into anime, but each of them required their own specific show that I picked out for them based on series they liked.

If you want to show that anime isn't a kids medium, then I would probably recommend more mature series:
Ghost in the Shell, for starters. Great story and characters, deep plot and philosophy and really awesome design.
Psycho-Pass is a lot like GITS, but there's more blood and the philosophy is easier to follow. Both series are really good Police/Thriller shows.
Darker then Black and Code Geass I would also recommend as well for the same reasons, but if he doesn't like Super Power then probably not those.

If it's less about the violence, then maybe Steins;Gate? The characters aren't as serious all the time but the plot is hard to confuse for being kid-friendly.

You said he might like SoL, but off the top of my head it might be hard to find a mature slice of life series. Maybe Violet Evergarden or Mahoutsukai no Yome.

all of the shows I recommended I know are all dubbed. If you want, give me some more criteria (PM me if you're okay with that) and I can add more series you can try.

Here's some stuff that's definitely not for kids:

* Time of Eve: Intensely philosophical. A series of 6 shorter episodes. However, I dunno if it's dubbed. There's also a movie version that, from what I've heard, strings all the episodes together.

* Noir: Assassins. Assassinations. Ancient conspiracies. Europe. Frequently contemplative/slow. And some influences from the noir genre. 2 cours.

* The Price of Smiles: War drama/tragedy. He'll have to watch the first two episodes to know it though. It has the colors and general aesthetic that he might associate with something for children, but it has very heavy themes about war and political intrigue. It is set in something with sci-fi/fantasy (science-fantasy?) elements, so I dunno if he likes that. Also it lacks a dub. 1 cour.

* Yukikaze: Another military drama. This one's protagonists are specifically two adult men. They may be gay, but I forgot if they are. I don't think there's a dub, but I'm not sure about this either. I do know, however, that the animation of the aerial dogfights is extremely well-done. 5 long episodes.

* Record of Lodoss War: A fantasy adventure story reportedly based on an actual D&D campaign. This is, like, really old D&D, like from the 80s or 90s, so it's not in the same vein as recent isekai fantasy stuff. If he likes D&D or generally Tolkienesque fantasy he'll like this; otherwise I'm not sure I'd bet on it. It's dubbed, though I dunno which one I prefer. Multiple subseries, but the first series is 1 cour I think?

* Chaika the Coffin Princess: If you want something that involves teenager/young-adult characters, but very definitely shows off how it's not for kids, this dark fantasy story will work. For example, one of the first things that happens in the show is that a monstrous unicorn attacks the protagonists...who then proceed to cleave it in two, leaving its guts to plop onto the ground. (It's not all just gore, of course; it's actually got a meaningful story behind it, but this did kinda set the tone very noticeably for one of my friends.) Dub available but I actually recommend the sub since I think the Japanese voicework depicts Chaika's broken language more effectively. Split into two halves each of which is 1 cour.

* Cross Ange: The sheer amount of violence and sexual content in this series will demonstrate abundantly well that this series is not meant for children. WARNING: Extremely risky choice. Since he's superficial enough to think that anime is actually for kids, this might be a bad idea that'll just result in other flak being pinned on you -- e.g. instead of "why are you watching all this kiddie stuff?" he might end up asking "why are you watching all this perverted stuff?". Dubbed, and the dub is quite solid. 2 cours.

You'd be hard-pressed to say anything with the R-17+ rating is for kids. Finding one that doesn't involve superpowers might be a little rough though, but maybe my scope isn't particularly large. Not to mention some of the best examples of anime that isn't for kids involve superpowers (Fullmetal Alchemist, JJBA, etc)

Maybe Btooom? I think that falls more into sci-fi than superpowers.

It has comments in the tags on why I liked a particular anime I've rated highly. If he needs a recommendation for a particular genre or subject matter, feel free to contact me.

My mom (in her early 60s), has started watching anime for the first time over the last couple of months. She went from having zero interest in it (even though I've been a fan for more than 20 years), to wanting to watch it everyday. I've found that it's easier for her to get into and digest a short series or a movie right now. I'm seeing some suggestions here that your dad might actually really like, but asking someone who is already skeptical about anime to commit to a longer series like Monster or Death Note may not be the best idea.

One of my mom's favorite series so far has been Erased/Boku dake ga Inai Machi, which you've already seen, according to your list. It's short, it really kept her interest from beginning to end, and since pretty much every episode ends with a cliffhanger, she always wanted to hurry up and watch the next episode. Obviously there's plenty of stuff in it that's not appropriate for kids, so your dad should be left with no doubts about the target audience. I think my mom also liked the whole concept of being able to go back to the past to fix your mistakes or regrets, or to appreciate simple things that you took for granted as a kid, like eating a meal with your parents in your childhood home. I think a lot of adults can understand feelings like that.

As far as movies, she's liked a lot of them so far, but for your purposes, Wolf Children/Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki might be the best option, since the main character is an adult woman with adult problems, like struggling to raise her kids, fit into her community, and support her family financially. Again, these are issues that almost any parent can understand, so this movie might interest your dad more than something with teenagers as the main characters (although my mom has liked plenty of those, too).

While you may represent a larger demographic than his dad, what makes you think people of my age couldn't change their mind? These are my recs. that are less action-y as it looks like that’s what ur going for:

• The Devil is a Part-Timer!
• Hinamatsuri
• RELife

**(if he likes horror and suspense & From the New World)
**(if he likes comedy then maybe The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.. this was a good icebreaker/gateway for me showing a lot of people as the humor really masks the fact they are watching a cartoon for a lot of people, also it being on netflix doesn't hurt because most people have that & can watch it on their own time too)

If you don’t mind about the action but still not balls to the wall and a decent story line (but not sure exactly of his tastes) these have appealed to people more mature who weren’t into anime before I showed them.

• Golden Kamuy
• Spice and Wolf
• The Promised Neverland
• Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
• Fate/Zero
• Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199
• Made in Abyss
• Astra Lost in Space

I really wish I could narrow it down but you know their tastes better than anyone & also understand that if you don't get it right it will most likely be tarred forever.

So yeah probably RELife or Hinamatsuri.

edit: My list is all dubs so if you go through you might find something else that fits your criteria but same like you, watch more action based anime & not much SOL and I don't think i've watched any sports series yet 🥴.
