A lot of people call themselves otakus but whenever I hear someone call themselves that it just gives me flashbacks into where we all pretended to be anime characters and say shit like "your not a true anime fan if you don't _______". It also hurts me when someone says I'm a true otaku or I'm proud to be an otaku like ok we get it you watch anime. What do you guys think? Do you prefer to call yourself an otaku or a weeaboo and if you prefer one why?

Edit:I'm trying to reply to a lot of your responses but i might contradict my self in literally everything i say sorry

I didn't know what the concept of Otaku and Weeaboo was, what was clear was that I liked watching anime and reading manga, and i think calling is not important

I don't really like being associated with either term, but if I had to pick it'd be otaku. Being labeled as a weeb is far more derogative and legitimate weebs are incredibly cringey people. I just like my animemes man.

if you call yourself a weeb, you're either really unfunny or really prideful of being it

if you call yourself an otaku, depending on how you say it, you are either really mature or a weeb

I don’t refer to myself as either, since both are kind of negative terms, but I jokingly call myself a weeb a lot.

Weeb is still derogatory.

Otaku was derogatory till the mid 00s or something, now it's fine.

I think the choice is clear.

Weeaboo, because theres a level of self-contempt to calling yourself a filthy weeaboo. It acknowledges and embraces the stupidity of it all.

Typically when someone calls themselves otaku, theres this layer of arrogance thats frankly pitiful. I always think: "Don't take yourself so seriously, jeez."

EDIT: OP should add poll

I hate the term weeaboo because it evolved from an exaggerated japanophile to a meme term that implies liking this set of mediums is a negative thing or it can only be done ironically
I'm sure that if this is your hobby and you enjoy it then you can make it more than a setup for a self deprecation meme joke.
I wouldn't call myself either because I don't really try to find a way to call myself, but if I had to it would be otaku easily, simply because I understand I am one.

also I have a image to maintain on these forums y'see so I'm contractually obligated to write the following line and the following line is 100% my actual true real feelings of for sure I mean it:

  • :) call me papa weaboo cause papa cory sure is in the house haha o love my japanes animes gurumagesh (:

I'm called a weeb a lot but no one who calls me that actually knows what it means. I would always deny it, but it was easier to just accept the joke in the end. I don't really think you should openly call yourself either because they're both derogatory.

Light mix of each, neither fully.

I really appreciate Japanese entertainment beyond just anime, particularly in that I prefer their video games and wrestling. But I'm not the guy to call all the shows by their Japanese titles if they have western ones, or learn OP lyrics. Prefer a good gin to sake. So light weeb.

Same with the obsessive nature of otaku. I like collecting series I enjoy rather than just streaming, and I have about a dozen figures, but I don't go nuts with it.
TEN COMMANDMENTS:
1) If Evangelion and Psycho-Pass are his only 10s, he probably also worships Tool and smells like cheesy puffs 2) Freudian psychosis =/= good writing 3) Moe blob art style is only ok in pure slice-of-life comedy 4) It's ok to enjoy shounen. Having fun is allowed 5) It is not ok to enjoy isekai (jk, it is, I just fucking hate it) 6) Creator breakdown =/= good writing 7) A story does not have to be wrapped up with a bow. Life is messy, why would a good story need to be tidy? 8) InuYasha is proto-Twilight 9) Ecchi CAN be good, but is almost always an abomination 10) If God is real, They allowed Super Kid to happen, so fuck Them

When I know the Other person Likes to meme a lot I say I'm a Weeb. They'll know I'm memeing too probably. When Its more of a serious talk then I say I'm just an Anime Fan or Maybe I say I'm an Otaku.

Definately depends on Who I'm talking to.

I consider myself otaku and used to use that word more, however I think the term "hobbyist" suits me best.

Since I like to delve into many aspects of the hobby (not just watching anime and reading manga, but collecting figures, building models, collecting and learning anime music, drawing and crafting, enjoying idol culture, attending anime conventions, etc), I think "hobbyist" is a broader term that covers how I participate in the hobby best. My significant other refers to me as a "specialist," which I think makes sense when compared with someone with significantly more interests than anime-related ones, but within the anime community, I actually have pretty broad tastes and activities.

I'm probably overthinking it, but I think I like the more general term since I'm not a fan of labeling as a whole in spite of labeling often being necessary. I still use "otaku" on occasion, anyways, since I really don't think it's wrong.

TLDR: I definitely use the word "otaku" to describe myself, but I have a strong preference for the word "hobbyist."

For me Otakus in the non-Japanese world are just wannabe anime fans who've only seen around 10-20 anime and think either Naruto, One Piece, DBZ or any big shounen are the greatest anime ever made... Having pissing battles against each other about who've seen the most anime (then the real weebs show up and destroy them)... And all that cringey fun...

I on the other hand by all means am full weeb trash... (Aside from not trying to learn Japanese through anime)... I got the Japanese style decor, clothing, figures, merch, chopsticks, dishes... I even cook nearly only Japanese/asian style food... Though I've been this way far before I even knew what anime was... But getting into anime made it that much worse... Or better depending on how you look at it

I'm just a fan of anime and manga.

Otaku is way less used on the internet when compared to weeb since weeb is so misused that a lot of people unaware of what it actually means will call people that just watch anime a "weeb" when it's not what it actually means.

Neither but if I had to choose one otaku would fit better.

I don't know what comes along with the terms? I'm a closet anime fan to begin with so I don't call myself shit when out in public. Wouldn't anyways, I don't want to identify myself with anime. Not that there's anything wrong with it but like we don't have words for people who watch lots of western shows or movies, so why are there words just for anime?

If you willingly call yourself a weeaboo, that is pretty much the equivelant of being fine called the N - word. The word is meant to be degrading, you weebs. No one likes a weeb. They pretty much are the embodiment of what a worthless loser anime fan is. Hates everything western - 2D > 3D - waifu culture, ecchi series, uses Japanese words like kawaii or sugoi in their sentences to appear witty or funny. Don't be a weeb.

If you willingly call yourself an otaku, you are a normal person who wants to express their liking to anime through a calling. Tho, in Japanese, it means pretty much anyone who is obsessed with one hobby.

I don't call myself any of these, since I'm not obsessed. Anime is just my favorite hobby and it's easy to find mature and well animated series from anime media. Animation is beautiful and I love deep stories. Call me an anime fan.

Remember 1 thing. You can't be passionate about your hobby, you can enjoy things only ironically. At least this is what other insecure, close minded and immature people thinks.

Generally the only worse thing than using idiotic meme buzzwords to call other people because of their hobbies are people who calls themselves a trash. This is beyond my understanding and simply pathetic.

I don't really prefer either, just call myself an ecchi fan or an anime fan and leave it at that whenever I need to say something along these lines.

If forced to choose between the two, though, I really don't care. I kind of prefer Weeb if choosing between the two, because I don't really want to call myself either title unironically and probably never will do so, because I don't unironically identify with either of them, and Weeb is more accessible in terms of irony.
