Neon Genesis Evangelion (anime) and Berserk (manga.) NGE doesn't have anything that's TOO physically violent, but it does get very psychologically dark, and the fucked up thing is that you totally understand where the characters are coming from and you still relate to them.

Same with Berserk, although it actually is physically, emotionally, and sexually brutal. Both of these feel especially dark because of their masterful character development, which makes everything that happens in them feel all the more relatable, fucked up, and tragic.

Kara No Kyoukai.

Like, holy shit. o_____O

I haven't seen anything this dark since Elfen Lied........probably. I still haven't watched Shiki yet and I couldn't get through Higurashi franchise.

Fate/Zero is also up there...as Shadow Star Narutaru (which I didn't finish either because NOPE. lol)

I think Berserk is the only really "dark" manga which I can take serious.

Not as dark but also good, Death Parade and Parasyte.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Depends on what you consider dark. I would consider Haibane Renemi quite dark Psychologically.

Gakkougurashi is also quite dark in many ways as well.

And plus one to Fate Zero and Kara no Kyokai.

The good kind of dark that's at least watchable or the bad kind that just makes me want to fly to Japan to sucker punch the author?

Obligatory Berserk answer.

Other than that Perfect Blue, Sidonia no Kishi (1st season, before it turned into a space harem), Alien 9, SnK (this show fucking scares me, sorry can't help it), maybe also Higurashi and Kiseijuu but I was new to anime back then, dunno how I'd feel about these shows now. But I wouldn't call it my top list, these are literally the only anime that managed to creep me out so it's not like I had much to choose from.

Went through my lists and picked out whatever I consider "dark". Too lazy to rank them though.

Berserk seems to be the darkest thing I ever read (also the most dark thing I ever enjoyed)

Tho there is a certain point when it is no longer dark and just becomes silly to me.

What does 'dark' even mean in this context?
The atmosphere? Themes? Do you count anything with blood and gore instantly as dark?

Is Naruto considered a dark series 'cause of war and death?

The darkest anime/manga I've experienced BY FAR is Oyasumi Punpun. I was highkey depressed for weeks after reading it, and I had to take a lot of breaks or I just felt such an overwhelming feeling of despair. Like seriously. Idk what was wrong with me

Had it on ptw for a long while now with a "High Priority" tag, I am a little bit unsure about it tho, heard that it is extremely repetitive from a certain source ( @Lord_Sithis ) so I have been kinda putting it off and prioritizing other high priorities for now.

EDIT: also on a side note can we stop with the boku no pico meme? is it about the shotas? well this anime community is full of lolicons, how are shotas any different? it is basically a trap shota hentai, nothing special, yeah sure it has terrible animation and art like every other hentai but then again... every other hentai has it, why is it a meme? WHY?!?!?!

Eden: It's an Endless World! - violence, rape, post apocalyptic, drugs
Shin Angyo Onshi - dark fantasy similiar to Berserk
Blade of the Immortal - rape, guro, human experiment
Lone Wolf and Cub - the cruel life during the Edo period, reality is dark enough.
Oyasumi Punpun - depression
Holyland - driven to suicide, drugs, violence ecc...
Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai suru - sexual abuse, psychological

They are the ones i can think of right now.

@Darek I think it was the first shotacon anime released. It's made fun of because anime fans have no problem with 2d pedophilia, but they have to actively show they're not gay by bashing Boku no Pico, yaoi and fujoshis all the time. And then they wonder why other people cringe when they spout "we can make the difference between reality and fiction".

Well, my question is exactly to know what you considered so dark, it provoked a reaction out of you where you thought "This is a dark anime/manga", so what I want to know is your points of view, not mine because I already know mine

Does not give me any answer really, those people are not that common and a lot of people seem to be pretty comfotable with their sexuality.

It sounds like you are talking about two types of people here to be honest and there is a difference between those two examples, like liking lolicon is different because people miss the biggest point when it comes to lolis and shotas they do not really resemble real children at all, at least with a dick it makes sense cuz dicks in anime do not really look any different to rl dicks perhaps cuz they're cencored

And now I derailed into a random debunking of some sode points and posts. Talent or a curse, Ill never know.

Darker Than Black. Because duh, no shit Sherlock, the title literally says darker than black.

Serious answer? The Sky Crawlers, for having an atmosphere and tone so heavy and bleak that it should be a poster boy for nihilism.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Neon Genesis Evangelion/EOE, and Cossette No Shouzou all got really fucking dark psychologically.

Higurashi and Madoka Magica are both dark in a 'oppressive, inescapable horrible torture followed by death' kind of way, though both series did eventually get happy endings.

Shiki and Parasyte were both thematically dark, showcasing just how terrifying human xenophobia is, regardless if it is warranted or not.

Berserk makes Game of Thrones look like My Little Pony. So yeah...

I also come to think of this manga called Wolf Guy, but it was more repulsive than dark tbh. Otherwise, Monster is a pretty dark anime.

I would personally say Monster is a pretty dark anime. It explores some gruesome themes (mostly having a psychological effect which I experienced rather than a visual effect) and some of the backstories and things that are done by the characters are just well...Dark!

Why the fuck would you chose to use two brit pop songs when you have a whole OST of excellent ambient electronic music, it's beyond me (^:
