IMO this is a big step for the industry. I hope this will lead to greater successes in the future even if itself doesn't do good. I'm really glad that the industry is taking steps to grow itself. This might lead to a better marketing in the West as well. As much as people hate live-actions, it's still better than nothing cause it atleast brings in the cash (Hope so since it's become so popular).

2016 is a fever dream and I want to wake up from it already.

Hey, what if they adapt it so poorly that it actually becomes good?

This fucks me up. How long has that adaptation been in concept/limbo? It's one of the few shows that could work just as well, if not better in live action, and already had Del Toro behind it, but it's never come to fruition and instead we're getting SAO? Alright mate.

Rather than TV series, a movie would be much better.

Regarding casts, gods, I swear if I see Yamaken on it as Kirito I'm gonna... Eh but wait, it'll be an American production, does that mean they're gonna cast American actors?

@blue-y I looked it up, the "Avatar" they're referring to is the movie about the blue people.

This will definitely be a train wreck.

At least it's not referring to the Avatar: the Last Airbender adaptation movie.

American production company Skydance Media, a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures, has announced that they have acquired global rights for the upcoming Sword Art Online live-action TV series, which will be adapted from the original light novel. Film producer and executive producer Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) will write the script for the TV series. Miki Kazuma, editor of the light novel, mentioned that Kadokawa and Aniplex will release this news in Japan tomorrow morning.

The light novel, which is written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec, has been publishing since April 2009 and currently has 17 volumes in-print. It has been adapted into two TV anime series by A-1 Pictures. The first season was broadcast for two cours in Summer 2012, followed by a TV special in December 2013. The second season broadcast in 2014. In addition to the anime adaptation, the series has received multiple manga adaptations by various artists. A movie is expected to premiere in Japan on February 18, 2017.

The series charted in the first half of the yearly manga and light novel rankings, selling a total of 489,374 copies, the second-to-most sales per series, while the 4th volume of Sword Art Online: Progressive was the most sold light novel volume with a total of 284,686 copies. Yen Press licensed the light novel and Aniplex of America licensed each of the TV series, as well as the the special, for North American release.

So basically, if you thought SAO couldn't get any worse, it's about to get A LOT worse.

This wont do unless they poured Game of Throne level budget. That's if they can turn a very japanese story into a western one.

Dude wat? A1 had like 480 minutes to adapt this and done it horribly, you butcher it to 120 minutes you'll see a deeper hell.

It was popular because of the premise, concept and Kirito being overpowered Gary Sue.

man i started watching anime because how different it is from western productions and how much it allows, you can't just make anime into hollywood anime they're just gonna take the idea to make money off people who never heard of the actual anime. i don't think it's helping industry much tbh. and this one's gonna be like that tron movie or something but longer i guess (and tron already was hella boring)

extremely fitting summer set in the middle of october ik

GiTS would work better as a TV series imo.

For once I hope they Americanize the shit out of this to some unrecognizable point so it won't end up being a cringefest for all the anime fans.
LIKE SERIOUSLY WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS.

Live action for anime always didn't work. Doubt this will be exception.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

http://www.classzone.com/books/lnetwork_gr08/page_build.cfm?content=analyz_media&ch=30

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Ans here I thought the series will eventually fade away into nothingness, but they keep pouring "love" to make sure we'll remember it forever.

Nope, nope and nope. SAO is a very japanese centered story, with many japanese anime culture cliches, I will be surprised if many western audience liked it.

Well, l was thinking more about the budget for movie vs tv series, movie budget is generally way bigger than tv series, not to mention it gives more freedom. Tv series is for... well, television broadcast. Can you imagine the kind of limitation (censoring and stuff) that's going to be put on it so it could air in prime time where a lot of people can watch (and thus producer could sell broadcast rights more expensively)? Besides, adapting a source media into a movie doesn't mean it's going to always tell the whole story right from the beginning. It could pick up a particular point of story and expand on it (or make an entirely original plot that's not found in the novel).

Anyway, are there no news yet whether it's a complete American production with American actors or is it going to be Japanese actors?

NOOOOO.

I mean, SAO was pretty lousy at some parts, so maybe the show could improve a bit, but it needs a really big budget.

Oh wait too late it already happened.

Anyway, this could work nicely as a live action the premise is relevant enough right now and the setting does not depend upon being set in Japan.

Whelp. The only chance to avoid Crucifixion from the critics would be to adapt Sword Art Online Progressive. Else, critiques would slam SAO for it's huge time-skips, massive leaps in character development, and a bizarre plot structure that has a coherent beginning and end but no middle.
