Uh can someone tell me if the scene with the old man and the girl was adapted in that way in the manga? One or two years passed since I've read that passage so I don't remember it that much.
Wasn't Rickert traveling with them first? And I don't remember the girl dying and attacking Guts ...

It was actually accurate as far as I remember, until the bandits and tree showed up that is.
Nah Rickert met with Puck before that, IIRC before the Eclipse.
The girl does die in the manga and kills her father before attacking Guts

Thanks for the information. Do you, by chance, recall the chapter(s)?

But I'm also afraid that they will mess up too many things ... because the manga material is really, really worth to adapt as good as possible. No need to substitute things or something like that IMHO.

Another thing I forgot to list: the overactive camera who was all over the place during some scenes.

@Sapewloth I see. -_- It means that I must watch/read the flashback now that I have seen this eps before going further. And more importantly... the so-called "Black Knight" story covered in the first books, who was announced to be adapted this time, would have only get less than an episode.

Well... I was expecting an CGI like Sidonia (which would be more than fine to me ), but oh boy that was far, farrrrrr worse.

The music score is freaking awful. Will still watch it to see if there' some improvement.

I'm pretty sure the carriage scene was in chapter 2.

Yea Berserk deserves a faitfull adaptation. I don't really see why they would change the stuff they did, nor how it makes any goddamn sense for that matter.

Let's focus on the good first: the music and voice acting was pretty great. Hearing the music gave me serious nostalgia to the original Berserk TV anime, so A+ there. Beginning the series with an original scene was the best way to handle where it started from for both a newcomer's perspective and those who've already seen at least the movies/tv series before seeing this. I'll also point out that while I'm not a fan of the CG, it is at very least better than the stuff that was used in the Golden Age movies so far.

With that said the zoomed in action scenes look really bad and they've seriously fucked up Casca's character design! I don't understand why the movies and now this series is so determined to white wash her, but whoever's doing it needs to stop. I also hate how that in every image we've seen of her so far she's either been completely helpless, naked/about to be raped by Femto or her post eclipse state (which is understandable considering what part of the story they're adapting). It really undermines her strong characterisation pre-eclipse.

While the first episode was a bit of a let down, I'm hoping that the series will change my mind. It's not that I didn't enjoy this episode, it's that Berserk deserves a faithful, respectful and well executed adaptation.

Too lazy to see if anybody else already wrote this, but if you look at the studios working on it you'll realize that one of them has only worked on low grade otaku moe fanservice shows until now and the other one is completely new. They don't have a fucking clue what they're doing!

Honestly... they chose the worst possible show to adapt without knowing what they're doing. I bet they wanted to get into more serious shows and thought that adapting a classic would be their ticket; too bad the Berserk fanbase will tear them apart...

EDIT: Wow- The rating went down a whole number in the time it took me to watch the episode.

Ouch my eyes. I'm a fan of CGI especially in Ajin and Sidonia no Kishi but this actually hurts my eyes in the case of Berserk.
I couldn't watch 10 mins straight without having to look away from the screen.

Basically.

If you're feeling courageous, you could read the 115 first chapters of the manga and then resume with the 2016 anime -if you feel like it-, which I highly recommend since you will get the full version of the Black Swordsman arc and have a much better grasp on Guts' motivations and character progression after the events of the Eclipse (and you'll also experience the Lost Children arc, that the 2016 anime won't cover). Technically you could just watch the anime and/or the movies, but you should know beforehand that their reputation as subpar adaptations doesn't come from nowhere: complete absence of animation for the tv series despite great character and background art and excellent soundtrack, overabundance of CGI in the movies, rearrangement or straight up omission of important events in both etc. They aren't bad products by any means but as far as adaptations go, they fail to do the source material any justice.

Why didn't they go with Polygon Pictures if they're using full CGI? The movement would be more natural and smooth if they did...

Puck also feels quite out of place (and that voice, ugh). I still liked it enough. Though I don't follow the manga so I don't know how much they butchered it or not. You would think something different like a dark fantasy would get better treatment.

I don't really recall the time line being that much off in the original series. Aside from cutting some stuff(like Puck) I don't think it deviates from the manga by much.
Then again it's been ages since I watched it.

but yeah totally agree, manga is the go to when it comes to Berserk

i don't think its worse thing ever about this anime.
even though the CGI is off putting

but my mine problem is that the cut a big arc out off the story.

which was the lost children arc and guts fighting a couple more monsters.
i know the arc they're doing is better.
but i doesn't justfly taking out big chunk out of the story.

maybe it's because I'm not a manga reader, but this anime didn't feel right to me. It kind of felt rushed and like it was lacking something.
Like it was all just a storyboard put into animation, not really putting any life into any of the scenes. That's just me though, not sure if it's meant to be like that though ._.

Before the Anime: "Hey you don't know if it is going to suck, that is just the teaser"

Me: "OK good point given that this is based off of my favorite manga I really hope it is good but we will see"

After the Anime: "Hey it could get better, it is just the first episode don't judge/ If you don't like them don't watch them, nobody is forcing you"

see the problem ?

Also I have this weird thing where I finish anime shows even if I didn't like them, I even finished watching the naruto shippuden filler which was Naruto the Hero and I would rather gouge my eyes out than watch that again. Unless it is really, really bad like season 2 of SAO II though to be fair Berserk might head down that same route unfortunately.

I don't understand how people are hating so hard. Maybe those who have read the manga and were waiting years and years for a Berserk sequel are the one's who can be legitimately disappointed. Apparently the main frustration is that this first episode rushed several chapters of the manga. I personally don't know, I was starting to read the manga and just some days later Berserk (2016) was announced and I decided to stop reading to avoid spoiling myself. All I can say to those who were disappointed because this isn't a "faithful adaptation" is that we've only had one episode so far and you can't judge the entire thing already - maybe they rushed everything so they can contextualize the viewer for the next episodes? I feel for these people who feel betrayed because they expected one thing for years and years and then everything is completely deviated from those expectations. If I was one of these people I can only imagine two scenarios:

1) Overall disappointment which will cause me to immediately drop the series. Again, there would be no point on watching something that does not feel like what I envisioned when I read the original story.

2) Drop the bar due to expectations not being met. However, I can't jump into assumptions on one episode only. I will watch at least 2 more episodes to conclude whether or not I should keep watching - as I said before, maybe the next episodes won't rush the original story. The first impression is the one that counts the most, however it is hard to get my expectations lower than they already are. I should not let others decide my opinion for me - I need to have enough room to decide whether Berserk (2016) is something that is worth watching and an experience I won't be missing out on.

Moving on to the animation department, this is the funniest point to discuss. People just brainlessly jump on the hate bandwagon. Firstly, what the fuck did you expect? We've had 3 trailers over the last couple of months and you still come in the forums and the review section of MAL to bitch about something bad that was granted. You knew what the series was going to look like and you still went on to waste 24 minutes of your life waiting like vultures for the bad CGI - and afterwards you wasted another 5 to 20 minutes combining all the negative adjectives you've read regarding the bad CGI. How freaking petty. If you stop for a moment, you'll remember that you never watched the original Berserk for an amazing animation experience. From my personal experience, everyone I've failed to convince into watching the original Berserk presented the same argument - I don't want to watch an anime with such dated and shitty animation. Did Berserk (2016) deserve better animation? Absolutely yes! However, was the animation that awful that you can't experience one of your favorite stories? I won't try to convince people that it wasn't, since it comes down to your personal opinion; and if it comes down to that, allow me to share my personal opinion - overall the animation was actually decent and if you sum up all the moments where you have uncontestedly bad CGI you only get 2 minutes (which is like less than 10% of the episode); also even though the CGI was really bad at some moments, it wasn't bad enough to make lose my immersion (the worst offender is when the skeletons from the trailer appear, but as soon as Guts destroyed them it was actually satisfying animation). Another thing that bothers me is that people are complaining about the fights. The angles could be better, but overall they felt as (if not more) awesome as the original ones. Not enough gore? I don't know what people are talking about, I saw blood, dismembered bodies and vomit, in the first episode alone. If you want more than that you'll have to find a horror movie or something else. Regarding the vomit, of course Guts vomits, he got freaking stabbed in the stomach (when I first watched this episode I didn't even considered he vomitted because of the kid)!

Regarding the soundtrack, I can't even begin to comprehend the complains. The SFX are brutal, solid opening and closing, Forces Remix and amazing tracks all over the episode.

To address the final complaints about this first episode of Berserk, as someone who hasn't read the manga I can't understand what people are talking about when they say this first episode is confusing and that there was a lot left unexplained for people who are new to Berserk. I completely disagree with this opinion, this was a pretty straightforward start to the series, assuming you at least understand what you are going to watch - this series is a SEQUEL and it is expected that you have watched either the original anime or the movie trilogy and even if you didn't, it was still watchable and simple introduction to this new series of Berserk. Stop trying to buzzkill other people's excitement, especially of those who are genuinely interested in enjoying Berserk. All these hate towards this new series is irrational and many people are just riding a hate train in almost mob mentality fashion through the excessive use of adjectivation without any sort of critical thinking or arguments that are minimally logical.

Conclusion: The first episode was actually PRETTY GOOD (a strong 8/10 in my book) and it definitely seems like improvements were made since the first trailer and I am curious to see where Berserk can go from here. If you don't share this feeling of curiosity, stop tainting the anime for other people with frustration and insults.

Going in fresh, I have not seen the trailers or watched Berserk in the past.

For me the story wasn't very clear as to what is going on or what the main objective is for this series. There is an end of the world prophecy being fulfilled. Guts seems to have trouble follow him because of his brand, so he prefers to be the lone wolf. Flash backs of his past look like there was betrayal at some point so I guess his goal maybe vengeance. The whole spirits haunting the woods was a little confusing. Why does killing the skeletons free their souls? I suppose this was more a world building episode with showing fairies, establishing demons exist, and that guns also exist in this western fantasy world.

The animation was stiff and the CGI didn't blend well when they decided to switch to 2D animation. The opening is also slightly miss leading by being majority in 2D animation. The sword sound effect sounds exactly the same when hitting a tree, flesh, or just bone. Which is slightly annoying. The way the scenes were shot at the very beginning were kind of wonky, like it was hiding certain angles from the viewer.

Overall, not really thrilled about this one. I'll look at future thread posts to see whether or not I should give this another go.

Bad first ep. true but i think ppl overreacting to how bad it is!
of course many went with the hype train & that's the result.

++ OP: The best thing in the ep. by far! loved the hand arts Here & it was great recap.
+ Nostalgic: that feeling when you go back to the very begining.. augh!
+ OST
-- All over the place: not faithful.. Isidro? Schierke? too early.. those 2-3 mins. could be used for smoother first ep. instead of a dense mess.
- White Casca: now imagine black Griffith... yeah, that bad :p
- CGI: very stiff. impossible to capture the characters expressions with that stiffness. let alone the actions.

2.5/5 .. My expectations were low before it started, that's why i'm not very bothered.
