It stated she can retain memories for longer, not completely retain them. Considering the impression was that the anime had progressed a couple of days after she had ripped her memories out, and consider how unstable her condition seemed, the idea that she retained his memory for more than 2 days seems far-fetched. The only way around that is if Chihiro started re-writing about Renji in the diary, but then if that was true, why wasn't it revealed?

Like Red above says, it seems all to convienient in the context of the narrative.

can't quite remember if it was indeed 2 days, but im pretty sure it was just the day after. yes, she can retain the memories for longer, and that's what i felt like happened. im assuming that the night she ripped the pages and threw it away, she was thinking about renji every hour she lost. that's the idea that I got out of what she said but then again i may be overextending my assumptions.

i see what you mean by it being all too convenient, but i guess the series was aiming for a happy ending, thus it was probably hard to do anything else, more so because it was the last episode and deadlines may have contributed to the confusion

Euphoric field huh.. Im actually really satisfied with the ending. And thus we get the cliche but epic "This is only the beginning" line. Good series.

Definitely rivals Clannad. The part with Chihiro coming around and showing she still remembered him(I think that was the part anyways) got me, I wasn't close to tears, wasn't necessarily welling up either.. but I wasn't far off xD

Fantastic anime, I'll get started on season 2 soon.

The anime was good- it is no Clannad (that makes you cry), but then it is only 12 eps. As it is 12 eps, it does feel the ending was rushed and was all too happy ending - I actually like happy endings, I guess it just came too fast? If it was 24+ eps, with more character development, I could see it rival Clannad though.

I read the sequel is set in the past, is it anywhere as good as this? I can't imagine not having Chihiro!

Beautiful series. Compared to the "heavyweights" (Clannad, Kannon, Air) in this category, ef - a tale of memories, definitely was able to hold its own. Compared to those other series though, ef~ did not make me anywhere near as emotional as Clannad or Kannon did, however, I enjoyed the ending of ef~ more than the extremely unrealistic fairy-tail ending of Clannad.

Definitely a series that must be seen, however, if you are new to this genre, I would recommend watching Clannad/Kanon first.

Will have to see if season 2 can surpass season 1.
Will you be able to do.... what must be done?

Finally, we arrived at the last episode. The opening is modified a little.
The girls are saved by boys respectively before turning into bubbles and only the chains shatter. This works as a spoiler but it's not a big deal since the show is already starting. (For another spoiler, see my post in the thread for episode 11.) And the last episode begins.

Renji got heavy damage by Chihiro's final weapon in the previous episode. He also gets an extra attack from her in this episode;
"Erm, may I ask something strange? Have we met before?"
Renji should have coughed up blood in his mental world. If this is a video game; the knight got fatal damage, 1/100 life points left state. Joking aside, his last stand begins from finding a paper plane in the air and he eventually has her say;
They turned the short period of thirteen hours into eternity without any miracle. No deus ex machina or nice-boat-ending. It's an orthodox way of finishing the story and you may call it corny and laugh at "wings and chains", but that's "ef". At least, Chihiro and Renji's part was carefully and beautifully made and it gives me a good impression and satisfaction as a whole.

By the way, in episode 5, Chihiro says,
"The length of the chain is twelve years old.
It has never changed since the accident four years ago.
The reach of the arm is thirteen hours.
That's everything I have now."

The name Chihiro means "a thousand hiro" and 'hiro' is an old unit of length. English equivalent of hiro is 'fathom'. A hiro and a fathom are based on the distance between the fingertips of a man's outstretched arms. So Chihiro means a thousand fathoms and it turns into "very long distance" or "infinite distance". I don't know the producers' real intention they hide for her name, but she finally get the reach as long as her name means after all, thanks to Renji. Congratulations.

Not the ending I was expecting for Renji/Chihiro's part. I was expecting Renji to do more than what he did. Not a bad ending, definitely more enjoyable than Hirono/Miyako/Kei's story. Seen those kind of love triangle many times, kinda boring really.

A pretty good series overall, and that scene when Chihiro threw all her ripped diary pages into the air on the rooftop will for sure leave an impression in my memory that I can't forget.

Just to clarify, she can't remember anything from 13 hours previous. But that is only if she doesn't think about that memory for 13 hours. So if before she sleeps, she tries to relive the important moments in her mind, replay them, she'll remember them for another 13 hours. After all, the act of thinking about those things is a new memory.

So this part of the ending didn't seem forced at all to me.

The pages of the diary lying around didn't seem far fetched either. It's not like he found all the pages. Sure, the one that was flying is a bit convenient, but it's not unbelievable that a gust of wind would send it back into the air. And really, they could have just shown a page on the ground, but the flying page was more dramatic and more recognizable than a random piece of paper.

The only part I didn't quite like was where they showed Chihiro breaking those symbolic chains, because it wasn't quite explained whether this was some miracle (as they talked about miracles a lot near the end) or if it's just saying that she is free just based on the fact that her love is so strong that she couldn't possibly not think about Renji for 13 hour (in which case the breaking of the chains doesn't seem quite true or appropriate since she still will always have limited memory). But it's not a big deal. Better just to assume that it at least means they've found a way to be happy.

I'd agree with that (at least regarding Clannad, since I haven't seen Kanon). Not only did Clannad's have an unrealistic ending, but I thought the lead-up to it was a bit random as well, going wherever the writers felt like taking it.

Ef was much more down to earth, like I was following along with the developments, anticipating what would happen, and not just having surprises thrown at me. The characters seemed quite a bit more realistic too. I especially noticed this with Miyako's many voice mail messages. Also, the fact that the characters' passionate moments and first kisses would lead to them sleeping together seemed like another realistic touch. That felt more natural to me than the typical drawn out relationships that seem to go on for an eternity before there is even a kiss.

While I gave Clannad:AS an 8, I'm giving this a 10. It was totally engaging, had great animation and artistic touches that made sense (such as the symbolism), and had quite realistic/believable characters, premises, and events (which it's a pet peeve of mine when this isn't the case).

Time and time again, the power of love can't be stopped. Nevertheless, the ending was very enjoyable and plausible, as how many people have stated.

I'm very impressed SHAFT was able to make such a dramatic story out of a such a linear and generalized plot though. This is one rare series which is good not because the plot material was good, but how the plot was presented.

Very satisfying ending indeed, It's great for such a sad anime to have such a happy ending.

I will probably get started on the second season right away, I hope they reveal the story behind some of the side characters as well, like the girl who keeps appearing and disappearing.

Mostly disappointed. I did not like how the love triangle was handled, I facepalmed so hard at their "solution" that my head literally hurts. It's nice that Kei did not get utterly depressed, but I find it completely unrealistic and very hard to actually do. Especially in light of Chihiro's route, where a great emphasis was put on how much love cannot be repressed. Yet Kei will magically be happy with Hiro in a sibling-like relationship. I call bull on that.

I'm not gonna complain too much about the deus ex machina on Renji's part, it gave a happy end to Chihiro, for which I'm glad. Still, there probably could have been a better way to handle it, especially considering how there are no miracles. Or are there? (Now that I think about that mysterious girl showing up to everyone)

I was also expecting more on the mysterious girl and Humira's part (I was actually thinking she might be the girl Chihiro wrote about, or something along those lines). A pity, I would have liked to know what happened to them. Oh, maybe the sequel will answer this, almost forgot about it. I will check it out one day.

I'm giving it 7/10, it was good, but had parts that were not that great, and also caused some rage.

The themes explored in ef - Tales of Memories are very interesting and some episodes are beautifully executed, but there's too much forced and exagerated melodrama. At least that's the way I felt, the characters didn't do much for me.

The amnesia girl storyline was fairly interesting and has the distinction of being something that hasn't been driven into the ground. It's just a shame it's needlessly chained to a lump of crappy soap opera. I'd have been much happier with a 6 episode series.

Even if you do not care as much for the first season I would still recomend the second. It's quite a bit darker with less of what you consider to be a 'soap opera.'

I would definitely have given this a 10/10 if it had ended at episode 11. I would also have given this an instant 10/10 if the conclusion was anything other than power of love and believing in miracles overcoming incurable conditions and gave something more interesting, happy or not.

Still, ef's by far the best romance anime I've seen (not that I've see many) and in many achieved many things I thought would be way beyond a high school romance anime. I might still bump it to 10/10 after watching Clannad ~AS~ if it turns out to be overhyped and inferior to ef, therefore reinforcing its position quite a bit. I have high expectations for ~AS~and I heard it's vastly superior to Clannad, but on the other hand I found Clannad mostly mediocre so who knows.

Just finished the series and I have to say it was enjoyable.

Personally I wish the two stories were connected by more than the fact that two of the heroines were sisters, but I'll live. I liked both stories but Renji and Chihiro's story was my favorite. Renji and Chihiro's story was a serious take on the concept from "50 First Dates" and it was very touching. I am looking forward to seeing the sequel whenever it is released.

OK, I finished it a minute ago. It was over dramatized. Too much of anything is bad; they couldn't optimize the level of sadness. They tried to make a sad and emotional story, but they failed.

The story with the one-eyed girl did make more sense. But it got ruined by the emotional fittings of her. It was stupid for her to attempt to start a relationship without accepting her disease as is. At the end, she both tortured herself and the people around her. And that made me quite frustrated. A short memoried person must have very big and more important problems in his/her life, rather than love. When she woke up in the morning, she should be trying to remember her daily routines. I don't believe that a person can keep only the latest 13 hours of events in her memory would have opportunity to fall in love. The life must have been too difficult for her, so that she couldn't have any change of flirting and experiencing so emotional events.

Oh, the other story... One day, he is good with one of the girls (yet she calls her onii-chan (brother); i know that they are not blood-related), and the next day he sleeps with the other girl (and yet they are both high school kids). IDIOT, you decided to f*ck with her, at least lock the door and don't fall a sleep both naked, since the other girl is gonna come into your room early in the morning as she does every day!!
What happened at the end? The two timer jerk said both girls that he loved them. Now they both think that he chose them.
What are the parents of these school kids doing?????? A girl f*ucking with a boy by spending the night at his place (and yes, the door of his room is unlocked), and neither the boy's parents nor the girls parent know about this!
Hey man, it is 03:00 am and your daughter still is not at home. Don't you wonder where she is? OK, I will tell you, she is f*ucking with a boy who is not even her boyfriend.

In the first place, why are there two parallel stories? The stories didn't tie up at the end, unlike in Kita he Diamond Dust. I believe that, since either of the stories is weak, they wanted to make stronger combination by combining two of them together. I just watched this one, because of its high score in ANN. My taste in anime usually match with the taste of others; but it didn't happen that way this time. I don't understand why so much people like this show. It will be a mystery of like forever for me...

My overall score for this show is...
Starting from the middle point between 0 and 10; 5.
+1 for good graphics.
+1 for being better than an average anime.
-1 for all logical errors.
-1 for the too much sadness which spoils everything.
-1 for not having a decent ending, not existing a solution point to the events.
My score is 4/10.

It's said in previous episode that Miyako lives alone, not sure what happened to her parents though, but you can clearly see they aren't there anymore. She even said she had to take care for herself, parents didn't speak to her, talks to herself in her house; with nobody there.
As for Hiro, he lives alone. I can't really remember the backstory of all that, but there you go.

Why involve parents into that? They were both searching for something they where missing, as for Miyako that means her loss of her parents and needing love.

this ending was just so perfect and well done

chihiro could never forget renji, that just brought me to tears
i'm so damn happy that EVERYTHING turned out so well for EVERYONE

miyako and hiro look like they have their future set for them, which is very nice

hell, even kei isnt as bad anymore. seeing how well she turned out despite hiro choosing miyako over her just earned her my forgiveness and acceptance

and then even yuu finally finding yuuko was a nice finishing touch at the end

ill say it again, this series was just absolutely PERFECT

Honestly this is the only anime that has pulled me in to this degree. The writer of this series is amazing. Not only did I feel the struggles that the characters felt, but every emotion that went along with it.

I don't think I've ever felt this attached to a show in my entire life. It made quite a deep impact, and I love it because of that. I honestly believe this was flawless. Now I feel like all my 10 rated anime should be bumped down because this truly belongs in a league of its own.

Chihiro's story was probably my favorite out of them all, her storyline was wonderfully written and how her novel was basically just one big allegory for her life was touching. Great show, 10/10.

Ah...so good. I was really really worried there for a while. I was afraid of something happening to Chihiro's diary for a while, but when she tore out those pages last episode...that was just too painful.

Renji searching for the lost pages was so touching, but the whole time I was descending further into depression, thinking that there was still no way to fix this since the main issue of her forgetting about him every day won't change. Even if he does gather the pages, she would likely just reach the same point and decide to forget him to save him from the pain he would experience.

When she said that she can't forget him because there's no way she can stop thinking of him for 13 hours, I just started bawling... Such a beautiful resolution.

This series has impressed me so much. It would be first class from the animation alone - lighting, visuals (esp sky and water), fluid motion, facial expressions, symbolism (I'm sure a bunch of it still went over my head), but the story and characters were just first class. I can't remember the last anime that I watched with such a real, human cast of characters. Their emotions were just so true that I could not help but fall in love with them. I definitely want to look into the visual novel now. There's still the next season to watch too!
