Same here. I must admit that I am probably overrating CG given my general disinterest in/dislike for mecha/action series.
Cookie-cut cast (say that fast 5 times :) is fine so long as those characters mesh well with the story at hand.
Death Note was one my earlier show too, when I first got into anime last winter. When he tried to use his near-death father to find Mello's identity, I just hated his guts after that.
Oh good..man you're lucky :\
Yup
I meant we didn't watch the same animes and I finally found some familiars on your list
And yeah. .10 is not enough at all
Since my capabilityand time for animes is low it took long for me disaid which one too watch. .last time I picked randomly it was shit!
Just remained me why I don't watch this type and why I should take my time choosing --
That is a good ability to have. At least you can enjoy an anime while you are watching it.
I constantly evaluate the anime I am watching by gauging my emotions. I have dropped dozens of animes solely because I disliked the main character for various reasons; in fact, I put character first and foremost in my evaluation because sympathizable characters are a basis for my enjoyment.
I have definitely grew much more cynical after watching more animes. Whether or not that's good remains to be seem, but it works fairly well right now.
To each his own. I felt that Light practically had no redeeming aspect; at least Lelouch worked to create a better world for his sister. While his methods are suspect, his intentions are not.
I have been disappointed enough that I drop with ease now. Too many bad experiences with getting frustrated over and over again; too many unmet expectations. Chances are if I didn't like the first couple of episodes I won't like the rest of it, because characters are mostly static in anime. Few see a deep change in personality to warrant my attention for another couple of episodes. Even Lelouch is static, but at least he's round/multidimensional. Round characters are at least more interesting than flat characters.
Same here. I stopped following currently airing shows; it sucks that that's pretty what all the blogs talk about, but I hate having to wait a week between episodes. If I want to drop a series, I want to drop now, not 3-4 weeks down the road.
Funnily enough, that's exactly my feeling toward Death Note. I hate Light as a human being, but to be able to elicit such a strong reaction from me toward the main protagonist is no small feat.
That's an interesting thought. I think I did look up to Lelouch because he, more than any other character I have came across in my anime experience, is the single bigger driver/creator of plot. CG wouldn't be the same without Lelouch; he does things that few other characters can. More importantly, he is proactive, unlike plenty of other reactive characters (*cough*Shoe*cough). He doesn't merely wait and react to plot developments; he creates plot by working toward a goal, something so simple that many animes nowadays lack.
Perhaps comparing Lelouch with Jesus is also unsavory, but the underlying purpose of his end is uncannily crucificial. Personally, it served as a great moment of catharsis that signified his achieving his ultimate goal.
Stopping at the end of S1 is as good as dropping though, since S1 ended on a cliff hanger.
Nowadays if an anime confuses me I just drop it. A good anime should always make its story clear and engaging. The presentation is just as important as the content itself.
Now I'm just waiting for Akito to finish its run in theaters and get fansubbed so I can marathon it. CG isn't CG without Lelouch, but I still dig the character designs.
IIRC I spoiled it because back then I scouted animes on Wikipedia before I watched them (gotta make sure I like it before I watch it). Nowadays I just read the synopsis on MAL and go with it. Makes a lot more sense to watch it and evaluate it based on how well it conveyed the plot and character development without prejudicing myself beforehand.
I thought it was the perfect ending for him. Kinda turns him into Jesus; very cheesy, but honestly can't think of a more fitting end for all that he's done. His actions weren't exactly the utmost ethical, but that's part of his appeal, that he is highly intelligent and idealistic but flawed.
I like how this quickly turned from GC on your favorite list to, perhaps, your hate list.
Peer pressure sure works fast...... Hehe
I can understand. Not everyone enjoys over-the-top, twist-filled plot. Can't say exactly why, but I got hooked on CG from the 1st episode. I guess part of me just loves to watch "intelligent" characters like Lelouch outsmarting everyone else. Even though I spoiled the plot by reading through Wikipedia, I still loved it. It doesn't happen often that I wind up loving a plot-oriented anime despite spoiling the ending very early on.
If you hated S1, you will hate S2. Unless you just want to finish it for the sake of completing the series, I'd stay away from it. S2 will only raise more questions regarding the plot.
Glad you found the review funny. I just can't stop laughing at the thought of the "fridge" void..... And the best character being the American colonel? LMFAO.
While I don't deny that some people can find GC entertaining, I'd have to try really hard to ignore everything but the art and music. Incidentally, I have to credit GC for introducing me to supercell. Odds and Ends is currently my favorite song.
GC will go down as one of the memorable series ever, if only because it was so overhyped. I have to admit, the fact that GC shared some of the animators with CG raised its bar incredibly high, so much so that many would consider GC a failure for failing to match CG in terms of story.
From your review I can see that you enjoyed the OP; not sure what else you found great in the 1st episode though.
Despite all the hate, GC had, arguably, one of the best OST and artwork in the last couple of years. However, great art and sound is but part of the package; GC's atrocious character development (or lack thereof) contributed to its dislike in many pockets of the otaku community.
I am gonna hijack your conversation with Ballermina here:
What was so bad about GC?
Well, I couldn't explain it any better than this blogger: https://swabulous.wordpress.com/2012/03/29/guilty-crown/
The lengthy review itself is much more entertaining than watching Shu in beta mode.

That..... is a really weird reason to favorite an anime.
What happened?
