Show them the first 5 minutes of Elfen Lied or 1 chapter of Berserk that usually gets the job done.

Well, honestly, I find anime fans a bit black and white thinking, most anime is geared towards children, but has a more complex story line than its Western cartoon counterpart, so fans assume its not for kids. Also, there are no curse words in Japanese, so thats why a lot of anime has cursing in it, because there is no other way to translate it.

Isn't it a teacher's responsibility to answer student's question, no matter how stupid it is? If they say "stop asking" it means that they can't answer it and if they can't, it usually means that they don't understand it much.

Plan to get new ones.
Put those friends on hold
If those friends still somehow manage to annoy you while they're on hold, drop them.

then write a review or blog about why you drop them.

I've yet to see a decent argument to prove anime is for kids, It's just the medium. Take Monster for example, Its more complex and mature than most movies or series I've ever seen. Following the anime is for kids logic, a Monster anime would be for kids, while a live action won't, that shows how faulty that logic is and how It doesn't work.

There are anime for kids and for grown ups, just like, movies, series, games, etc...

I guess not a lot of people know what anime is or aren't enough of fan of it to understand what it is.

So because of that they think its a "cartoon" and then judge that its for kids, ... I guess

most of the naime you would watch is intend for kid shounen and Shojo are intended for kids while Josei and Seinen are made for Older People age between 20-35 ie adults

Anime can be incredibly superficial, and even if its mega violent it's not really adult (mature).

Most anime is super trope-y and soulless like genre fiction. Don't try to sell people on anime's maturity it's too hard of a fight to win.

There is no such thing as storytelling for adults. All that matters is sex and violence. The rest are all nonsense that insecure people use to streghten their egos with.

Oh my god, why.

And it really depends on the anime. Some are much more kid friendly, some aren't. Probably depends on where you live and what they choose to show on TV, and how much censorship is involved.

Anime is a medium, just like live action film/television, radio, and books. And, like any medium, there are subsections of it with certain target demographics. Saying that anime is either just for kids or all porn is like saying that all film consists of shoot-em-ups with big explosions or that all books are centuries-old tomes that are so long that only nerds and old people read them.

There is anime that is targeted strictly at children, such as Maya the Bee and Hamtaro.

There is anime that's targeted toward teenage males, the shounen genre, which includes such things as the action-packed Dragon Ball or the classic harem anime like Love Hina.

Likewise, there is the shoujo genre, directed toward teenage girls, including Rose of Versailles and Sailor Moon, for example.

There's the seinen genre, as well, which is targeted at more mature watchers and will have a wider variety of protagonist types which can range from a schoolgirl like Maki in Air Master to a surgeon with a troubled past like Kenzo Tenma in Monster to a cocksure post-apocalyptic bounty hunter like Kanta in Desert Punk.

There's the back-of-the-video-store genre of Hentai which I won't link to because people are going to give me funny looks if I do.

And there are even shows that lack any real classification at all, like Revolutionary Girl Utena, with different aspects which appeal to different demographics.

In the end, people are entitled to their own opinions. But, unless their opinions are well-informed, they tend not to mean jack. If you do want to tell the world that you enjoy anime but you're afraid that they'll just laugh at you and put you in the special needs group, bring along some evidence to prove them wrong. Tell them about something in the medium that they're likely to be interested in. Do you know that they're a science fiction fan? Throw Ergo Proxy or Evangelion their way. Do they like mysteries and psychological dramas? Monster or Perfect Blue. History buff? Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Contrariwise, don't just say that you're into anime (especially since your exposure to the medium is so far limited to one show). Instead, say that you're into a supernatural martial arts series called Bleach. Go over the high points, convince them of how great it is, and then mention that it's anime. Sort of like saying someone who hates film, "I saw this great psychological thriller a while ago about an FBI agent who has to get the help of an insane genius who's in prison in order to catch a serial killer." Give them the pitch and then tell them what they're getting. If they're not insanely prejudiced, you'll win them over to your point of view. And, if they do turn out to poohpooh you after you're finished talking, then screw them.
Somewhere, there is an unplugged toaster sitting on a Coleman stove.

Does it feel lonely?

The reason people think they are for kids is because they generally only get exposed to the kiddie shounen anime that air dubbed in America. They have never gotten to see the real good 14+ anime that people on this site can enjoy.

They think its for kids because they haven't actually seen it and dont really know what they're talking about, nuff' said. There's an uncountable amount of anime you could show them/describe to them to prove prove them wrong if you really want to.

If you really want to fit in, just put Legend of the Galactic Heroes in your top 5 and have it be the only 10-rated anime in your list.

Some even say that American cartoons are for kids, but then they forget shows like Family Guy, South Park, and Futurama. There are still mature anime that air on programs like Adult Swim, but it's not really during the day hours and is a little less known than the prime time airings.

Because most anime is for kids. Evangelion was a kids show, after all.

It's just what is considered a 'kids show' in Japan would be an adult show in America. Obviously no American network would air Yu-Gi-Oh or Evangelion uncut on Nickelodeon or CN because of all the blood, rape, death, and religious stuff.. but in Japan that's all kiddy stuff.

secondly the first animated media were cartoons, like disney shit, which are only for children

lastly the only anime that none fans see is the stuff on tv like pokemon, naruto and one piece, and those are all for kids

i think anyone who really begins to watch anime realizes it is far more diverse and engaging than crap on at least American TV

It's true though. The exact same thought comes to my head. When I try to think of anime fans outside of an anime fan's perspective I think those kids that ran around in highschool with the naruto headbands hanging around their neck and calling themselves names from animes.

I could ask several friends what comes to mind when they think of anime fans and i'm pretty confident i'd get the same answer.

I'm not gonna say you're wrong, but you have probably have smarter people around you.

You see, where I live, people will only say something is mature if there's one of these things are in it in massive numbers:
gore
tits
cussing

I prefer for people to not think I'm an echii freak, so I usually go the cussing/gorey route of Black Lagoon or Hellsing to prove my point.

True, but I think that the anime with less gore and or sex would be a better or at least be included in the anime that you would recommend to prove anime can be for adults. Elfen Leid, Hellsing, and Black Lagoon, while they are pretty adult, they are also only like 3 anime. The best way to prove that it's not only for children is not to only recommend 3 of 7000 anime saying that they are adult. But to also put in anime with a more adult(but not nessacarily with sex) theme, like Bartender, what kid is going to watch and enjoy a slow slice of life anime about a bartender helping people find their perfect drink.

It's easier to have sex and gore than to have a show with great dialouge and story. And an anime not just focused on sex and gore is more likely to appeal or to prove the point that anime can be for adults.

Anime is short for animation, and their are animations in cartoons.

Some people's minds are limited, and since thats the most obvious similarity, people just group them together. It may have something to do with the anime eyes stereotype though.

There is now ord for anime in your language? anime is a japanese word (pretty sure anyway, someone correct me if im wrong), anime is anime that is what you would say. but anime is cartoons anyway, rather than say oh yeah i like anime, i like to point out a specific show and not be so broad and sort of talk about what it is about depending on if im annoying them or not :D its a good conversational tool for me actually, i can go on and on about various things about various shows. may get annoying sometimes but it is better than an awkward silence :D

Are you talking about friends by the way?

my friends have never really thought anime for kids, i think most them have actually watched an anime series or two at one point :P i generally dont talk about it though, ive tried to make anime related jokes before, didnt really work out xD

Randomers on the street/about town may think its for kids if they ask my interests but i mean, im not too bothered what they think. and if my friends think its stupid or whatever then it would just become a group joke and we could laugh i guess, im not a little bitch so i dont care i just laugh :D but yeah like i say most of my friends have watched some anime at some point, my old friends ive known for years havent but they dont care they know what its about and they know me and why i like it, i have good friends ^_^
