All in all the best arc of both series' so far (at least my fav). Muller, Eisenach, Wahlen - all get to play some role in the arc (though we never see the first two). We learn the story behind the directional zephyr particle which is later used in the main series (If I'm not mistaken). The inclusion of littenheim in the whole affair was another plus, since he's one of Reinhard's first obstacles on the road to power in the main series. These inside references make the two prequel series mostly for fans, but they're pretty good for fan fodder I must say.

Some of my fav scenes from this ep wre with the girl. She completely fell for Kircheis lol. The last two eps in particular had some good dialogues that made me smile or simply laugh out loud.

5/5 - with this arc I'm bumping my rating for this series from 7 to 8

10 years later, one of them will marry the little girl? I hope so..

I am not sure about giving it a 8 though. I'll probably settle down for a 7

maybe I enjoyed it more since I'm already a fan of the main series. I think I wouldve given it a 7 max if I hadnt seen the main series first

;_; Yeah, I loved this arc, alright.

It really had the main OVA feel and quality and characterisation to it. And yes, yay for our favourite admirals getting mentions but sobsob no Reuenthal.
Reinhard being Reinhard was wonderful, and Kircheis - seriously, what's his soul made of? <3

Probably my favorite gaiden. So how many of Reinhard's admirals have we seen him be introduced to before the main series?

- Mittermeyer
- Reuenthal
- Wahlen
- Lennenkampf
- Schaft
- Eisenach
- Mueller
- Kempf (for like five seconds)
- Kesler
- Lutz
- Bittenfeld (I think? for some reason I can't remember his exact appearance in the gaidens)

(And we know that Mecklinger was Reinhard's Chief of Staff before the main series. And Reinhard was of course introduced to Oberstein and Fahrenheit in season 1. I'm not sure about Kissling though.)

Anyway, it's satisfying knowing that these aren't just offhand cameos -- Reinhard handpicked his staff in episode 5, and we now have the context for those selections (well, in the case of Lutz I'm not sure why Reinhard would specifically want someone with knowledge of 18th-century firearms ^_~)

Bittenfeld was in the Gaiden, but extremely brief, Reinhard made an inquiry as to the captain of a certain ship when it rushed in and destroyed two enemy ships, and Kircheis mentioned it was Bittenfeld . . . But I'm not sure if they went any farther than that (he might have had a call, and said good job, I don't remember)

Anyways, loved this arc, Reinhard was a boss in this one and took out like 15+ ships on his own.

Great ending of this arc I must say and well I do wonder what the last 2 episodes in the last arc will offer us!

Good little arc this one. Reinhardt shows what an effective commander he was.

What a touching moment between Margaret and Kircheis I almost cried. I hope she don't join the military when she comes of age.

Nice ending for the mission.
I'm glad Margaret and Bendling left together.

Now I'm sad we don't get to see a grown up Margaret.

These three anime-original arcs (Mutineer, Duelist, Retriever) are definitely my favourites, even counting the original OVA. They deal quite nicely with some flaws in the original while also setting up a lot of background.

From how he accidentally called the Rebels "Alliance Government" in episode 24, I thought Bendling could be a homesick FPA defector or an FPA spy when he volunteered to become the guardian of Margareta. Turns out he's the son of a Baron, could he be a distant relative of Herxheimer or a relative of those who tried to poison Herxheimer's family that felt guilty?

Lady Margareta's crush on Siegfried was touching.

What an arc that ended up being. Pretty much 5/5 writing throughout those four episodes. This may go against popular opinion, but I think that I prefer Spiral Labyrinth over A Hundred Billion Stars.

Reinhard fear of Kircheis defecting with the girl was the best joke in this series haha.

what a strong willed girl, and that foreshadowing we had less than ten years.

One thing bothered me here is why Reinhard told the rear admiral about the true purpose of the mission, doesn't that endanger their life more?

Very interesting revelation about the Braunschweig. It is true that the Empire under the Goldenbaums had an almost eugenics ideology. :/

Little Margareta was adorable and seemed to really like Kircheis. I understand her, he would probably be the best friend we could have (although a little too submissive maybe? xD)

Great arc!

Every time I see Gaiden I like him even more.
Before it seemed only a "good complement ... but expendable" to the story.
Now Gaiden seems essential to me.

I wish that instead of having made the remake, more alternative stories (spin-off's) had been made from the original anime.

Like that episode that focused on a random Alliance soldier (the botanist) during the Alliance invasion of Imperial Territory. I would have liked more episodes like that in the original ovas.

In this case I would have loved to see more of the Bendling's life caring for Margaret.

Great small arc and its conclusioin, couldn't be happier to see other admirals before they even became who they are in the main series, explains so well how Reinhard met them and got to see their abilities.

The girl leaving with that inspector to the alliance was really fair and great idea for all sides and her farewell with Kircheis is sad knowing what the future had brought.

Overall this might be best arc of Gaiden in general, not that many boring moments or things to pick on

Wow, a story arc involving an obstinate child that wasn't insufferable. Maybe she was a bit too adult in her mindset but its rare that she wasn't written to just scream and cry and be a gigantic shit the entire time.

Man ngl, when the little girl gave Kircheis that teddy bear it got me teared up, mainly because we all know what happens to him later on, and it's possible she found out later on, or never finds out, either way it's sad
