The nobles sure met a pitiful end. They lost all sensibilities thinking they even had a sliver of a chance remaining.

Looks like Merkatz is being saved to fight another day but will the Free Planets Alliance really welcome him? They're still in the middle of their own civil war.

The fact that many soldiers plan to seek asylum in Phezzan and others like Ansbach are still alive can't bode well for Reinhard. The noble threat is gone but his major enemies will still be around. There's also the matter of Reinhard's apparent inaction letting 2 million people die by nuclear strike. Even though the probe that took the pictures was sent by Oberstein, Sieg may have a hard time believing it.

One civil war down, one more to go.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

Only 2 million people living on an entire planet? Why even bother nuking it?

Hopefully Reinhard figures out that Obelstein is a snake before too long.

I guess if you're in a conspiracy it's better not to voice your negative opinions of the leadership if someone might overhear you.

I wonder why Merkatz and others consider Braunschweig to the be the last representative of the Goldenbaum dynasty. He's not even a Goldenbaum himself, just a son-in-law of the last keiser. Why not support the grandson?

Also, Braunschweig and his nephew are too idiotic to lead anyone.

Braunschweig.. pitiful indeed, although to be expected.
And I wouldn't like having Oberstein around if I were Reinhard, that guy sure is... yeah. :| I don't really hate his character though, it's just this.. uncomfortable feeling that I get. Some more emotion, perhaps? Ever?

Definitely enjoying this series so far, although I only prefer watching it in small doses since it's a bit of a chore for me to understand all the political stuff going on.. Takes some time to digest. Still, it's great, and the scale of events very impressive. The "older" animation doesn't bother me at all either, and I like the more realistic character design a lot, too. :)

It'll take me forever to finish, but I don't mind!

Braunschweig and the rest of the nobles sure went down in the worst possible way this episode.

Reinhard had a tough call this episode, and yet it wasn't entirely his fault. That Oberstein and his bastardly ways came through and got the public support needed.

Right now, I'm wondering what Siegfried will do now considering all that's happened.

Seeing Merkatz fighting for the Alliance will certainly be interesting, but will someone like Yang accept him so freely?

I'm more worried about Reinhard becoming a dictator, so far hes wish to become the ruler of the galaxy is starting to... annoy me a bit, he considered the fact of leting Westerland being nuked, just to buy a scheme for his politic campaign, and without a doubt, Oberstein is certainly a snake, I'm not even sure of his loyalty to Reinhard.

Anyway, I really want to see what explanations have Reinhard about letting Westerland being destroyed, supposedly they both share the same justice and ideals, but I don't think that decision will make him happy at all, and knowing what kind of relationship they share, that will be a delicate matter that I wouldn't want to miss it at all.

About Merkatz; I don't really see why is it a problem, I mean, it is for sure that he has been fighting the FPA for more than 40 years, but hes an honest man, and so does Yang. Not sure if it is up to him to accept him so freely, but it will be without a doubt a great help for Yang to have such a quality admiral at his side.

I'm of the opinion that that was definitely the worst way for the nobles to be usurped. I didn't like any of them by any stretch. But its like watching someone die in a pool of their own feces and throw up. A lot of them died as cowards, madmen and incompetents.

As I saw the nuking of Westerland I couldn't but say, "no" out loud. In a way, much of this arc has reminded me of scenes from Rose of Versailles.

Oberstein worries me. By that I mean I'm worried about what he may do or try to coerce Lohengramm to do. I'm not worried about him right now, though. No one could be more competent.

It kind of was, as he's supposed to be the boss. He's letting Oberstein have far too much authority and didn't punish him even though he was responsible for the deaths of 2 million innocent Imperial citizens. I don't see how to interpret this other than it showing Reinhard's ongoing corruption.

Given that Yang hasn't yet turned away superficially likely traitors even once, Merkatz joining the Rosen Ritters seems envisageable. ^^

Hoo boy, if Reinhard had Kircheis at his side, the proposition of allowing the nobles to nuke Westerland would never cross his mind. And he even acknowledged this. Ugh, I'm sure he will change for the worse if Oberstein stays there as his advisor. I'm wondering why he lets him do as he please.

And here's something I don't quite understand: Oberstein said 'make sure they come back in 4 hours', right? That might mean two things: first, he was just being cautious, and it's pretty obvious that launching ships takes some time, so he wanted to make sure they get away in time. The second option is that he told Reinhard they have 6 hours, when he knew from the beginning that it was 4. Which one is it? It may be me failing to follow, but it's quite hard when it's not my native language and everything happens so fast xP
Although Reinhard's 'you planned it' would point to the second one...which proves my point: why does he trust him so much?

Sieg's face when he found out was priceless. If I remember correctly, that's the first time in 23 episodes that he made such an expression. I want to see him confront Oberstein about this.

Can't wait to see Merkatz in FPA :)

Damn epic episode!
I like it how already factions are showing which will probably take part in future fights.
Merkatz and the Free Planets, many other to Phezzan and even inside the empire there will be a last fight against Lichtenlade before Reinhard has full control...
Looking forward to see how the civil war in the Free PLanets is resolved :)
I probably regret this post by now.

its a pride thing I think. He cast his lot with the nobles. They lost, so going to Reinhard just because he was on the losing side would be hypocrisy on his part.

I am so glad those two fools are gone for good. Now hopefully we will get some more interesting enemies for Reinhard to fight. Namely Mr. Wenli :)

I love the dynamic between Reinhard and Oberstein. Also, Oberstein's voice creeps me out. His tone never changes much even when he is advising he leader to kill millions of people. O_O

Nice end to the Lippstadt Army. I really hated Flegel and Braunshweig. It's nice to see that Reinhard still cares, but a little disconcerting that Oberstein could play him like that. He needs a little more time in the oven before he can rule the entire Universe.

I feel bad for Merkatz; had he been born 25 years later he probably would've ended up in Reinhard's staff of brilliant commanders instead of being coerced by Braunschweig to defend the dying remains of the Goldenbaum Dynasty.

Oberstein has been pushing Reinhard harder and harder as the series has progressed, but I think he may have pushed a little too hard in this episode. Then again, Oberstein is such a calculating person that I have to imagine he knows what he's doing -- hell, he even told Reinhard that the Goldenbaum Dynasty had to fall all the way back in episode 8.

I don't like where this anime is going :((. Don't get me wrong it's a great anime however the cruel realities are efficiently portrayed. I don't like Oberstein's plan, even though is extremely effective, and I am disappointed that Reinhard did not stop it. I don't like the relationship Reinhard and Siegfried is developing (I can see them becoming enemies), I can only see a dark future. Hopefully Reinhard doesn't become a tragic hero :((( But I predict he will and Julian will be the one that takes him down (hence the last scene in the ED song).

Admiral Merkatz will definitely be a big threat to Reinhard in the future too :(

"sigh" What a dark future for Reinhard even though im rooting for him...
I have a feeling that Reinhard will start becoming the "evil" side whereas Yang WenLi will be the "good" side. However I'm still rooting for you Reinhard!!

What a great ending to this arc. It seems everything will be good for Reindhard now that he as destroyed the noble opposition. I can't wait to see how he will organize the new country and what kind of government he will install. I hope Siegfried gets a high up place in it. Now its just a battle between Yang Wenli and Reindhard Lohengramm von Musel!
Also, when the nuclear bomb first went off and I saw that those people were about to die iw as just like "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT!" because it was really shocking to me because the explosion came out of nowhere and it killed those cool people that liked Reindhard. Also, its kind of a plot hole that the nobles didn't just use the nukes on Reindhard, that would have given them an easy victory. Maybe it would be harder to hit them because they are in space so they could dodge it as opposed to being stuck in a given area of land. Whatever, this arc was still anything but bad!

It's been swell, but I really only came this far so I could drop it and make my 1/10 count. Good bye.

Now that would be insane. Almost as insane as nuking civilians. That helped to reinforce the desire to see the nobles get ousted once and for all. It also raised attention to a difference of opinions between Reinhard and Oberstein. Somehow I get the feeling Oberstein will become Reinhard's shadow army and do more harm than good for his reign.

Ah but those nobles all got their just desserts. Stupid nephew with stupid hairdo, glad he got gunned down by his own men. Wasn't even given the luxury of "dying honorably." I got a good chuckle when they held that pig Braunschweig down and forced the wine down his throat. "You're the head of a distinguished family, die a manly death!" I'm glad Fahrenheit didn't have to die for those bozos and it would be interesting if Merkatz really does join the Alliance.

I could have asked this a few episodes ago, but what's this talk about the end of the Goldenbaums? Last I recall Reinhard was supporting some five-year old boy as the new emperor who surely would be a Goldenbaum. Obviously the child wouldn't actually rule for years, if ever, and Reinhard would gain a lot of power which is what the civil war was about. Why are people outright talking about him being emperor?

The Fall of Goldenbaum is meant to be taken in the figurative sense, if one equates Goldenbaum with the old establishment that was shaped by the nobility. Most, if not all people who served under Reinhard could recognise the new order he was trying to build and would have known that the child emperor Erwin Josef II is merely a figurehead to preserve the shadow, but not the substance of the Goldenbaum Dynasty. So it is not surprising for them to comment as if the dynasty had already fallen.
