It's powerful how much simplicity can help bring out the best in a show. I've probably never watched a Pokemon movie with less "plot", yet never been as engaged. Overall a 8/10 from me.
Here I got the sense that Nao was unfettered, free flowing like the wind. Her mind wasn't attached to images and ideas of self like the other girls auditioning. This gave the jury glimpses of her spontaneous and genuine self which got her further in the auditioning process. Nao's reaction to the eventual rejection was a pleasure to behold as well; no self imposed sorrow—but rather a natural gravitation to what she truly enjoys (photography).
This stands out. This is Sakura in her "mundane" day to day life: no cards to catch, nor people to save—and so we are invited to observe as she simply roams around, letting her attention gravitate towards plain things (like making a present for her grandfather) and see them be done in the most childlike and sincere way. To the impatient the ep may appear to be "just another filler" that "adds nothing" when compared to the plot-enforced action that covers most of the show. But less is more. Above all card catching, it's moments like these—spontaneous and simple—that remain once the show ends.
This show has a distinct atmosphere that I haven't felt in other Anime and excels at being suspenseful and unpredictable. But what remains most memorable to me are really the dialogues between Mei and Kouichi, so I'm glad that's how the Anime ended. The dialogues they share are short & brief but make great use of silence (or rather the Japanese concept of 'MA') and are very effective in delivering the core of the narrative (The nearness of death even as one is "alive").
One can say that much of the show is dedicated toward bloodbaths & the mysterious deaths and how the confusion and horror it evokes, causes the students to do things they otherwise would've deemed immoral.
Yet when simple scenes such as in Ep 12 where Mei and Koichi conversing about whether they in the future would remember the deaths of near ones (or whether remembering is even preferable at all) manages to hit deeper then all the well executed action and suspense, it really speaks in favor of the show.
A 9/10 for me.

''The premise here is just a standard romance story, with decent enough writing and art, but the interesting thing is the female lead. She’s cute, but in fact she’s too cute and it makes the other girls get jealous and be mean to her, so she deliberately sabotages her own cuteness, keeping her head down to avoid Tall Poppy Syndrome and get along with her friends.''

Regarding RoV, actually I have to redo (or review) that review since I've found out of some interesting trivia regarding the series, but I'm lazy. How far are you into it, since it has been some time since your comment, maybe you've already finished it. Glad my words could help a bit, if they ever did. Cheers!
