I am myself a person that gets very emotional a lot when watching basically any show, even crying sometimes for kind of weird reasons like a great OST, insane animation or little characters moments that would normally not make anyone else cry. So what are your thought on this type of anime experience? I also left a list with every time I've cried when watching an anime or reading a manga and how many times respectively:

It's pretty normal to cry when watching an anime that is supposed to make you emotional, I think so. |

I am a softie while watching anime so there's a lot, I even teared up in the end of first episode of Violet Evergarden, but the title which broke me the most, I don't keep the track of such stuff as you do, so perhaps I would assume it is Diamond of Ace as that has quite a bit of episodes and each opponent team were made very nicely and I cared for both teams, for both of their reasons and their players which made me tear/cry at some scenes. |

I think when an anime can touch your emotions and even make you tear up from it then it's good. Personally, I like those type of shows. |

I don’t cry very often at anime as I’ve usually read the manga beforehand and so I’m prepared for the emotional scenes (and have already cried whilst reading it). But, I have cried for anime movies before, in a public cinema no less. Your Name and Suzume in particular I recall getting very emotional over. Such beautiful animation and powerful, emotionally charged scenes around the climax of the story are when set me off. Pass the tissues! |

Like I said in another recent thread, I like it when a story is emotionally touching and makes me cry. In this vein, I'm no stranger to having some tears, when some really heartstrings-tugging or heartwarming story event happens. And it's a very good thing when it does. I never counted how many times I cried to things, but as far as I know, those series that made me cry -- or more broadly, made me feel intense emotions -- tend to get higher scores. |

I have to ask: do you keep a log of every time you cried? Or can you count these moments from memory? As for myself: yes, I shed tears now and then. For me, it's easier to get emotional from anime, compared to other media. I also cry from somewhat unusual reasons. I actually don't cry that much watching overtly sad shows like Anohana or Your Lie in April... |

@perseii I personally keep a log of every time I've cried with any piece of media ever, I just filtered out everything that wasn't anime because this is MAL XD. Unlike you, "tear baiting" or overtly sad animes do tend to make me cry a lot but there have been exceptions like Grave of the Fireflies (which I didnt really like). |

Your Name got me, I will admit although they managed a happy ending. The finale' of Cowboy Bebop comes close, but not quite because all the battle before it had me too amped up. LOL. World's End got me in the first episode ( Damn THAT song!). So did to your Eternity though Season 2 kind of ruined the fine Melancholy Season 1 had going for it. Wolf's Rain is one that also ripped my guts out, well the OVAs did anyway. The Series is open ended. ( Crunchyroll needs to fix that and get ALL of it!). I'm in my 60's & I'm not afraid to admit this. <g> |

@Sheol01 Yeah, that is why I never finished season 2 of To Your Eternity. I felt that the tone and mood that I loved so much about season 1 was completely lost (I will probably watch the last 3 episode whenever season 3 comes around though). Also, it is really amazing that you are such an "old" anime fan. Do you have any recommendations for older animes before the 2000s? |

It's not the anime that makes you cry but what they represent to you. Humans are creatures made of memories and experiences. Anime speaks to your subconscious, when you watch an anime, a movie, a book your mind continuously makes associations, comparisons, goes to "take" something that is in your memories, in your life experience. There are people who are very skilled in this process of "substitution" and "insertion" and people much less. The anime character lost his grandmother as I lost her! and here I go with personal memories and emotions buried inside of me. And there are people who instead do not have the ability to insert themselves and reflect themselves in the characters and fantasy lives. Many writers, directors and authors go exactly in search of this thing because the more the viewer reflects himself in the character the more the work is appreciated because the viewer feels it personal and linked to it. You are probably a person who has qualities like those of actors and RPG activities. Also keep in mind that in real life there is no "soundtrack", while in movies and anime it is designed specifically to stimulate the senses, music on certain people can have very strong emotional impacts. |

Good writing is supposed to make you feel things. Often through characters, but also sometimes through music and direction. If something is interesting and/or engaging, I often find myself responding to events with a wide range of emotion. I would say this is the goal of any good writer. It's part of why I love the medium tbh |

Grave of the Fireflies is one of those movies that absolutely destroyed me, but then again I saw it as a child. Shame you didn't enjoy it very much. I also got teary from Violet Evergarden, which many people accuse of "tear baiting" but personally didn't really think it was. I think most people talk about the mother's letter episode or the movie's ending, but what really got me choking up was the ending of the season, Violet's letter. That sequence was just so beautiful, painful and hopeful. That's the kind of scenes I usually respond to, rather than straight-up sad scenes. |

@perseii Yeah, something like a diary I would presume. Regarding people accusing shows ike Violet Evergarden of "tear baiting", I personally think it is a stupid argument. If the show manages to evoke poignant feelings in you it shouldn't really matter how "in your face" the sad story is, because it was well written in the first place. And if you don't like the show or the way it handles certain sad plot points then it shouldn't matter how much the anime wanted to "make you cry" in the first place. If something is good, it will be good, it really doesn't matter how they handle exposition, backstories, plot progression and whatnot. |

I think most people cry when watching anime, me included and I'm someone who cries easily to a lot of things, and as others have mentioned good writing makes you feel things and whether it be anime, music or any other form of media its okay to cry. The most recent anime I have cried to would be dragon ball Z which is a show I've been enjoying and its coming to a close. |

Honestly impressed that OP knows how many times they cried for each show, did you keep a tally as you were watching? I do tend to get a manly lump in my throat, or shed a manly tear at climatic emotional moments, like when someone important dies (Rose of Versailles) or a couple finally get together (again Rose of Versailles), or even something like when the strawhat crew said goodbye to the Going Mary, man that had me in floods of tears, not even going to claim they were manly tears, I was blubbering like a baby. I sometimes find that emotional music can provoke strong emotions, such as in Frieren or Aria, when you had the beautiful music mixed with sweet and sorrowful moments, almost melancholy. |

There's nothing wrong with that, if anything I wish I cried more with the media I consume. When I see people breaking down into tears watching stuff like Angel Beats' final scene, which I even agree is a great bittesweet moment and I understand why people cry watching it, but I end up just feeling sad for the characters in the scene rather than crying and stuff, I feel weird because the most common experience seems to be the viewer crying. When it comes to anime, I think the closest I ever got to crying would be with Chrono Crusade's final episode, I actually felt really bad after watching that one for the first time, probably the first time I've seen a "bad ending" to a story and I didn't know what to make of it back then, nowadays it's my all-time favorite anime ending. |
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength. |

I've always despised sob stories. I don't sob, but as I get older, I become more tearful. I can't even remember which works I cried over because they just flood my eyes so easily. The deeper the layers in «Made in Abyss,» the more it snatched me of clear vision and emotional stability. |

@23feanor Yeah. I keep a tally. The thing is that I started watching anime in 2020 and because I knew that I am a persona that easily cries when experincing media in general I decided to keep track of it. This are also the times I've cried with non-anime content: The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2 (2), Avengers Endgame, Coco, Arcane (7), Soul (2), The Last of Us HBO (4), Persona 5 Royal, Dune 2, Avatar The Last Airbender (5), The Legend of Korra (9), Interestelar (4). Apart from that, Frieren is just a modern classic, a mix of such compelling storytelling and masterful animation and soundtrack is very rare in any type of media. |

@DarkFirefly72 wow, genuinely impressive. If the mood is right then I can be moved to tears fairly easily, although usually just a single tear wiped quickly away, not full on balling your eyes out crying (although did do that for the Going Mary farewell). I wasn't including the usual suspects like ending of Anohana and last ep of Plastic Memories on the ferris wheel. Strangely enough I found Gintama often has some hard hitting moments where you get side characters who die and it hits way harder than you expect ie shogun |

@DeonX I mean, 16 animes is still quite a few times that you've cried. I have friends that literally never cry when watching something (one of them as only cried for a deep dive Transformers YouTube video about a certain character that I cannot remember right now from the 80s TV Show). The Evangelion rebuild movies are really amazing and not that much people talk about them imo. |

@DarkFirefly72 I would say other than anime I don't think I've shed tears to any other medium/artform so many times. Hardly ever as a matter of fact. To each their own I guess. @DarkFirefly72 Oh heck yeah. Anything Pioneer made. OG Tenchi Muyo! El Hazard the Magnificent World, etc. Than there are great series like Dirty Pair, Slayers, etc. I'd say OG Starblazers, but sadly the animation really hasn't held up. Still, it's the show that made me an Anime' fan. |

I probably need to keep record of whenever I break down in tears over anime, because sometimes I don't even remember how much I cried since it happens too much. I'm very emotional about fictional stories (opposed to how closed up I am about real life), being able to laugh and cry over characters that don't really exist makes me feel at ease. This generally only applies to when I watch anime by myself. Some tears are fine, but getting all sad and messed up isn't exactly something I want to show off to other people. There are quite a lot of anime that make me cry pretty much no matter how often I rewatch them (sometimes even when I just rewatch certain scenes). A few favorite examples would be: Violet Evergarden (episode 9) A Certain Scientific Railgun (Saten's struggles and her relationship with Misaka cumulating in the Railgun vs. AIM Burst fight in episode 12) Tamako Love Story (Last scene with Midori in the school and her short dialogue with Kanna) Horimiya (last scene of episode 10 with Sakura in the student council room) Love Live! Superstar!! (season 2 episode 9 between Sumire and Keke) |

Glad to find another person crying so much over one piece as well haha. Especially wano for me. The intensity of the characters and what they stood for just brings out the tears like every other episode. |

@bryanyuchen Wano is definitely my favorite arc of One Piece. I still think that Marineford is a little bit better as an arc, but Wano is my absolute favorite. |
