Horimiya

On the surface, the thought of Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura getting along would be the last thing in people's minds. After all, Hori has a perfect combination of beauty and brains, while Miyamura appears meek and distant to his fellow classmates. However, a fateful meeting between the two lays both of their hidden selves bare. Even though she is popular at school, Hori has little time to socialize with her friends due to housework. On the other hand, Miyamura lives under the noses of his peers, his body bearing secret tattoos and piercings that make him look like a gentle delinquent.

Having opposite personalities yet sharing odd similarities, the two quickly become friends and often spend time together in Hori's home. As they both emerge from their shells, they share with each other a side of themselves concealed from the outside world.

I just came to say that Horimiya is one of the most wholesome and positive high school romance anime series I've ever watched. It kind of reminded me of classics such as Toradora, even though the romance is handled quite differently.

This won't be a long review, I'll just touch on a few key points. First, the characters are extremely believable, albeit over-the-top hysterical moments are sprinkled here and there throughout the series. It's a high-school romance, after all. What makes the series different is that Hori punches way above the standard anime tropes for a heroine. She's fleshed out amazingly well, even down to ... her little kink toward the end (which I though would bother me but in the end I was okay with it).

The animation, music and graphics are all good, not your Shinkai type of amazing, or ufotable type of fluid but the camera angles, close ups and overall cinematography is very coherent with the story. And it all falls in place quite nicely. Again, the relationships between the characters are portrait astonishingly well, to the point you wonder if this has some "based on a true story" elements to it.

In the end, it's a "coming of age" romance just like thousands you already watched. What makes it special is that you feel how real it is, and you genuinely feel happy for the characters. It reminds you that true love, compassion, friendship all exist in the real world. It's a warm and positive slice of life story that you will keep in your heart and use it to warm yourself during cold and dark periods. I'm glad such anime exists.

Mixed Feelings

I picked up this series on the strength of the recommendations and the high rating it has here. The show started off strong in the first 3 or so episodes, so I thought the hype was really justified. However, it started to fall off by the middle and it just ran out of steam by the end. The problem with the series is that we begin with the main protagonists, Miyamura and Hori, but then we get introduced to so many side characters that the main love plot sort of gets pushed into the background. The main hook for me was the atypical love story ... where the lovers confess their feelings relatively early rather than dragging it out for 1 or more seasons. This twist on the trope was squandered by having to develop about a dozen story lines in 13 episodes, which is not really feasible. The result of that was that I didn't really care for most of the supporting characters, given how rushed their stories were made (some of them didn't even have satisfactory resolutions). Plus, not all of the characters are distinguishable from one another; I was confused many times, trying to figure out who was who and why I should care. Another puzzling aspect is that Miyamura, the boy protagonist, starts off as the typical kuudere high-schooler, but then does a 180 and is barely recognizable as a normie on the last episode. Because so much screen-time was given to side characters, we do not get a gradual and plausible transition for him. He has some moments of self-reflection, but they are very cliché, and leave so much of his personality unexplored. Lastly, as another reviewer commented, the vibe of the show is very saccharine: all the characters are over sentimental, some have deep issues with each other, and yet they all end up being best buddies by the end. I believe this is the main reason for the high rating: its over-the-top, feel-good scenes. But the manipulation was obvious to me, and I sorta resent that. It's not so bad that I would recommend against, though. It's just... whatever. 7/10.

Hori and Miyamura was one of the most toxic relationships I've seen in a while

Hori is an angry girl with masochistic tendencies, but it didn't matter to me. The problem started when she forced Miyamura to beat her against his will, and how did the director show this? what a cool guy!! His schoolmate admires him!

But the problem is even deeper.

In another scene, Hori's father asks her not to treat Miyamura so badly and not to yell at him, and Hori's reaction? Yes, as usual, she said to shut up and continued to rant, which she does throughout the series

Contrary to what the series wanted ... to show, Miyamura did not change at all.
Miyamura remained the quiet and secretive young man who allowed the demands of others to prevail over him. That's why he was able to tolerate Hori so much. Why should it be shown that making many friends will change you?

In a healthy relationship, you give something to your partner and you get something. But Miyamura only gave from the beginning to the end of the series. The end of this show is very cliched and superficial. Hori and Miyamura's relationship did not last long

The rest of the characters do not have much to say. They get lost in the shell of the story and cannot make room in the heart of the audience as they should
Maybe iura can be considered as a good character.

People start a series with different goals, but if you are looking for a deep and lovely romance, Horimiya is not a good choice.
