It would be a depressed episode if he knew that he was the one that killed her.

DAFUQ?

I thought she was going to be the daughter of the guy piloting the ship or something. Definitely didn't see this coming. And talking cats too!? (well, they weren't actually talking, but they were communicating somehow).

I'm glad Jim didn't find out who was in the ship during the battle, that would've been kinda cliche.

So basically Jim just killed his own girl without even knowing. I dont know whether to laugh or cry... What the fuck, show! >.<
Also, TALKING CATS!!! THAT CAN FLY SPACE SHIPS!!! Not Ctarl Ctarl cats - REAL cats!

I loved it, but man what a messed up episode! I kinda wish they kept the girl alive for a little longer, maybe see a relationship blossoming and THEN having them meet on the battlefield... Oh well, they chose the less cliche way out by just killing her spontaneously and i can appreciate that.

I like how they handled this differently than in other anime.

Those assasassins are not very impressive so far.

A little too telegraphed and too silly to have earned the mournful harmonica that played over the last battle. Cowboy Bebop this ain't.

This was so tragic... ;_____;
Even though it would have been more "cliche," I wish Jim found out somehow that it was Hanmyo in that ship. The fact he never finds out is even more tragic. .__.

Ugh, Hanmyo was so damn adorable, too. This is simultaneously the best and most depressing episode thus far. The "mournful harmonica" during the final battle and the melancholic piano after adds so much to the mood, IMO. And that flower floating out in space... *sigh*
Romantic tragedies eat at me too much.

I'd agree the Anten Seven haven't been very impressive thus far, except Leilong was very impressive.

This surprising is a good episode. Probably because Jim's one of the few characters in this show that I can stand and it's focused on him and not on that jackass chicken pansy Gene. The ending is also really damn good. It would've been one thing for Jim to find out that he killed his girlfriend and found out that she was one of the bad guys but the fact that he never knows makes it way better, I actually don't see too many scenarios like that at least in something like this. Outlaw Star maybe a lame show but credit where credit is due, that was a well done episode

one of the best eps in the series, if not the best.

think this show has been consistently better when it tries to be serious as opposed to a more light hearted action show.

feel like more often than not, I see anime have the opposite problem where they tend to take themselves, and the premise in particular, too seriously.

this show needed a more serious approach to really fulfill the potential it had.

This episode reminded of early Gundam shows. Mainly, Zeta Gundam :\

I feel that they should have let Hanmyo communicated with Jim on her dying breath. This would have definitely traumatized Jim in the process and probably wouldn't have not moved on.

So, I guess I understand why they didn't do that. It's for the better really.

Ah well that is life. On to the next one!

Hmmm... this episode should have been more impactful. It was a tragic tale, but I think this should have been a 2-parter to build up the relationship between the two. Hanmyo only appeared in the last half of the episode basically. Why was she even piloting that ship against Gene? I felt that there was too much unexplained here.

Hanmyo reminds me of Cardcaptor for some reason, she just pure delight in her short introduction. I like how Jim gets his own focus episode, the poor guy is glue that sticks Outlaw Star together. I wish these two got at least 2 episodes together and I like the idea of the whole crew working together to beat/kill Hanmyo in the space ship fight.

Anyone else other than me wanted Hanmyo body dangling outside in space after the ship explosion, then Jim will realize what he done to the girl he loved? I know its bit dark, but I really wanted poor Jim to find out somehow. I wonder why he never tracked her whereabouts, just in case if she safe somewhere. I'm sure a genius hacker like Jim can go through security cameras to see what ship she entered last and when he does, he can find out she was one that attacked him.

Too bad it doesn't seem like Jim will get a happy ending, Hanmyo seems like a decent girl too. If only she wasn't an assassin.

The battle with Hanmyo shows how unimpressive Gene truly is. He can't win flying by the seat of his pants and has to rely mainly on his friends. I wish he had some more going for him as the main character.

Jim waiting alone was a bit sad. But, even now, I'm not all that attached to any of these characters. So I can't be as moved as I should be from stuff like this.

"...Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?"

Wish they give these high level assassins had more than one episode. The last one sucked but this one could have great. Built a relation with one of the main cast. Had the cast on the ropes in there fight and had interesting way of fighting.

Why is this listed as the episode 19 thread but everyone is talking about episode 20? I went to the episode 20 thread and there were spoilers for episode 21 everywhere. I'll just discuss episode 20 here like everyone else is I guess...

I really could not predict where this episode was going I'll give it that, the whole thing was setting up by constantly emphasising how Jim is the really responsible one and Jim tells Gene not to let his guard down on this planet, then it of course leads to him meeting that girl who happens to be one of those assassins from a few episodes back. So at this point I'm thinking the set up will be for her to catch Jim off guard and steal the leyline files that Fred Luo sent to Jim in the middle of the episode, but no it suddenly wrenched itself into a conclusion that honestly while sad was also really unsatisfying. Jim doesn't know he killed his date (he might find out later but still) so he and the rest of the crew learnt absolutely nothing this episode, it merely drives home points we already know.

We got another classic "Gene is a dick to Melfina for no real reason" moment again and I'm starting to hate the way I get the feeling that these moments are actually supposed to be setting them up as a couple, hopefully if that has to become a thing it gets explored with actual time and depth unlike most of the things in this episode, this probably should've been a two-parter, it feels like there was a lot that could have been explored but just wasn't.

🦜 Ahoy 🏴‍☠️

This is due to an error in the way the show was aired on television. Episode 16 and 23 were never aired(they were later released as specials), but eventually made it onto the box set with all the episodes in the correct order. Unfortunately this isn't reflected on MAL.

Still cannot believe that this Cowboy Bebop and Trigun aired at roughly the exact same time and shared so many similarities and exact same tone. The sad story twists that never get discovered, the off beat musical choices ,the small character quirks that all add up.

Major Zeta / 0080 Gundam vibes with tragic lovers unknowingly striking each other down. Feels very similar to the
pairing from Z Gundam, right down to the way their respective 'dates' are shot and structured to. Also the use of the lilies floating in space in the end reminds me of F91 - although in a very different tone to say the least.
The psychic cats in space combat is also rather reminiscent of Cordwainer Smith's short story 'The Game of Rat and Dragon' - or maybe just Cybuster's High Familiars.
