| As somebody that enjoys both, they are 2 completely different genres to me, granted, I only really read it in manga form. Light-hearted GL usually is very slice of life moe, whereas light-hearted BL is mostly like 'look at this wholesome relationship'. Then in more serious manga GL feels more focused on internal conflict between the characters, rather than with BL where it's often an external conflict impacting them. I'm a woman so I'm sure there is some bias as well, but some GL makes me a little uncomfortable because they often feature a 'pervert' girl character that's like 'haha, we're both girls so it's okay if I grope you without consent right?' I assume guys would feel the same when reading BL with similar characters. Overall, while they have a similar premise, I think BL and GL are different enough in terms of execution to justify not liking one or the other. |

| If you want to look at that this way, there aren't that many differences from straight romance to GL and BL either. They are all just love stories, after all. Not only that, but both genres take an awful lot from shoujo romance, a lot of times you could just slap a straight couple into them with a few adjustments and the story would work along just fine. So I'd say the same reason someone prefer straight romance over GL/BL, or the other way around. Just a matter of preference. |
| I'm the opposite. I like BL, but don't like GL. I'm still open minded enough to try them... but the only one I liked was Vampire in the Garden and that isn't even marked as GL (even though it clearly IS). Some people just aren't comfortable watching BL and some aren't comfortable watching GL. It shouldn't be forced on someone. The idea of watching GL doesn't bother me (I'm pan so why would it?) I just have difficulty with GL because I either hate them or find them boring (with Vampire in the Garden being the only exception). |

I mean as a bi guy honestly I like straight/BL a bit more than GL (though I like all three) just because it's easier to at least relate somewhat with a male protag/perspective in terms of romantic feelings than with just female characters in my opinion. Romance stories to some degree need the viewer to buy into the romantic fantasy and that means you need some character that the viewer in question would want to date or a relationship dynamic they would desire. I don't see why a straight woman would like GL or a straight man BL for that reason unless there was a lot more beyond the ideal romance (not really true in anime/manga). |

| "Not liking" something (as your topic title implies) is not the same as "having a distaste" for it (like in your opening post). For me, I'm simply not into guys, so I'm just not too big on BL compared to GL. But I still ship guys together in series, and can fangirl about their cute moments. Still no interested in 95% of all BL manga, but I certainly wouldn't say I have a distaste for it. :) On the other hand, while not all that interested in BL manga/anime, I'm a big fan of the male romances in the series Hannibal and Our Flag means Death. ^^ |
