The Jump Studio Red stage for Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story) manga announced a new television anime on Sunday.

The new anime series is being produced by animation studio LIDENFILMS (Tokyo Revengers, Mugen no Juunin: Immortal). Aniplex simultaneously opened an official website, revealing a teaser promotional video.

The original historical samurai manga ran in Weekly Shounen Jump between 1994 and 1999. Watsuki and his wife Kaoru Kurosaki began the Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Hokkaido-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc) sequel manga in Jump SQ. in November 2016. Shueisha published the sixth volume on July 2.

Studio Deen and Gallop adapted the original manga into a 94-episode television anime that aired from 1996 to 1998. Aniplex released a four-episode original video anime (OVA) the following year that served as a prequel to the television series, followed by a two-episode sequel OVA in 2002.

Synopsis
Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

One wandering samurai, Kenshin Himura, still works to make sure the values he fought for are worth the lives spent to bring about the new era. Once known as Hitokiri Battousai, he was feared as the most ruthless killer of all the revolutionaries. Now haunted by guilt, Kenshin has sworn never to kill again in atonement for the lives he took, and he may never know peace until killing is a thing of the past.

Now in the 11th year of Meiji, Kenshin stumbles upon Kaoru Kamiya, owner and head instructor of a small dojo being threatened to close its doors. The police force is powerless to stop the string of murders done in the name of her dojo by a man claiming to be the famous Battousai. Kenshin's wanderings pause for now as he joins Kaoru to clear both their names. But how long can he stay before his past catches up to him? [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I didn't think something like this would happen after everything that happened with the author, even with that I'm excited to see what it will be like.

I'll pass, already not a fan of the art style base off that few second scene. He looks a lot younger and have the shaman king art style imo.

This wont come close to the original.

Kind of weird seeing Kenshin news after the author getting a slap on the wrist for cp. I guess in America, we usually never hear of those guys again given how long sentences are.
The PV is so short I do not know what to think of it. May check it out eventually.

Any Rurouni Kenshin content is always welcome ~

I recently rewatched the live-action movies in preparation to the Final and the Beginning so it’s almost perfect timing for me. No real expectations though.

Well, this is a pleasant unexpected surprise. It'd be real cool if this turned out to be a full-scale remake that adapts the manga all the way to the end (á la FMAB) sans the horrible filler from the original series... but I'll manage my expectations for this until more info comes out.

I'm a little excited about this and I hope they just adapt the final arc of the manga. I just don't see Lindenfilms redoing 94 episodes of the original series minus the fillers.

I have conflicted feelings about this...

1) the original series was already soooo good - fantastic seiyuu, the incredibly good ost, the vibe! I don't know if they can re-create that
2) Nobuhiro Watsuki the mangaka, ugh, I don't think I can/should support that man...

It was very good indeed, but it was also incomplete, as they never adapted the last arc of the manga (the Jinchu arc). This is a chance to rectify that mistake. Who knows if they'll take it though. Might just be an adaptation of the on-going manga sequel (aka the Hokkaido arc).

Either way, with the studio being Liden Films, the creators of the modern Berserk adaptations, it's hard to get one's hopes too much... but we'll see. Still looking forward to more details, because it is a new Kenshin anime at last. That's a big event.

When did it became a half assed manga?

You had Kenshin Himura in your favourites and you had a layout in your profile showing your top 10 favourite manga in which you had given Rurouni Kenshin a 10/10.

Two questions:

So are they doing a cliffnotes adaptation like Blade of the Immortal?

and

Will there be official subs or a long wait for a good subbing group?

I can't believe it! I've been wanting a remake/continuation of this for years, and it's finally happening! I've been waiting 7 years for this! Whether it's a remake or continuation of where the last canon episode left off in the original anime, either way, we're finally going to get the Jinchu arc fully animated! And a complete adaptation of the manga too! 22 years after the original manga ended!

For those that don't know, the original Rurouni Kenshin anime's last canon episode is episode 62, while episodes 63-94 are all filler (but the Tsuioku-hen OVA episodes are canon). Almost no reason to watch the anime after episode 62. And I've never watched those episodes myself either. Instead, I went to read the Jinchu arc after I was done with the canon episodes.

And Lidenfilms are doing this instead of Studio Gallop or Studio Deen, huh? Well, they did the Blade of the Immortal 2019 remake, so this could be a remake too. But Blade of the Immortal (2019) was also a slideshow, so this'll probably be slideshow as well, sadly.

If LINDEN has Hamasaki direct this one then we are looking at a banger waiting to happen.
I loved how he handled Blade of The Immortal (minus the inconsistent pacing) so if it takes pages from that, it's bound to be very stylized and enjoyable.

I don't care. The manga final arc was fairly ass and kyoto already got adapted(pretty well with the fights might I add) then trust&Betrayal(only other good arc) got a supreme adaptation. Also this studio will likely suck the soul out of it with those visuals so it doesn't matter.

Definitely surprised considering the situation the mangaka got himself into.

If this is a remake I don't see LIDENFILMS producing something better than the original.
If its a sequel of some sorts it could turn out alright.

Exactly my thoughts.
Old anime was already fine, I like Tokyo Revengers but it's a bad adaptation and this studio is really weak.

I'm always open for new Ruroken, and this one's great news.

Given the studio shift, I'm having tons of doubts given that the original director did a stellar job and I doubt that the committee will get the same guy despite doing this in a different studio. They could've just kept this in Studio Deen as they always did a great job with it, even with the Mari Okada-retconned 2011 OVAs.

Aniplex better get Kazuhiro Furuhashi back for this one after his Spy X Family stint in WIT Studio as Ruroken is his defining work, or get Hiroshi Hamasaki instead for this if they can't get the former to work since it's LIDENFILMS whose going to do it.
