AOT S1 is indeed a bit edgy and seemingly shallow at times but for me as I watched S2 and S3 and S3p2 it really all fell into place and AOT became a pretty beautiful story about the horrors of war and the danger of cycles of revenge.

On a side note, you should give Shinsekai Yori a try! Currently watching it for the first time and it's super solid. It gives very strong DarliFra vibes, from the general plot and themes to the character design and animation.

Yo, our interests are super similar! I'm definitely still an anime noob but Evangelion has been by far my favorite series—it's probably changed my life. I also love that we both like DarliFra; most people seem to think that "watching Eva kills your enjoyment of Darling", but really I feel like they're separate and both enjoyable in their own ways. Also interesting to note is that we both disliked OPM and NGNL, and for very similar reasons. I do recommend you to give AOT another try; S1 was kinda brainless but S2 to S3p2 were really good, and give a similar Evangelion vibe (a lot less psychoanalysis and mindfucks, but more plot and holy shit moments).

Have you gone back to the eva movies since your new understanding of them?
Silveryo Jul 2, 2020 3:51 PM
That's great to hear, I hope you can appreciate the movies more this time around

Well since you said you started darling in the franxx, all I'm going to say is as a person who rated og eva 10/10, franxx is imo pretty trash in comparison. All I'll say is be prepared for the second half

Also thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate you watching the video!

As a fellow Evangelion fan, I loved you're reviews about the eva rebuilds, what I disagree about is the rating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHIvs0Q-uKI&t=577s I wouldn't be surprised if you've already seen this video, but I highly recommend you watch it in its entirety. It shed a whole new light about eva 2.0 and 3.0 for, and if you haven't seen it yet, it might for you

I really enjoyed your reviews, even though they were so few.

Yeah, I completely feel you. I merely cannot comprehend how people were able to enjoy the travesty that was Eva 2.0, especially the fans of the original. It's a watered-down "retelling", which has more in common Michael Bay's creations rather than NGE. As for 3.0... sigh... These movies shouldn't have been made.

Great Eva 2.0 and 3.0 reviews, mate!

I did not mean to dismiss the series but rather that t is not the sort of heavy, war story that LOTGH is. And that's fine while those stories are great in the hands of a good writer when done badly they end up being death obbessed, over dark crap . SW isn't trying to be that it uses war to make a context, a backdrop, for a a character ensemble story.

I've been reconsidering having idols in the franchise and yes I think you are right it could work morale support would certainly be an issue in such a time.

Some further thoughts on the new Strike witches series. So we getting idol witches, now I am not actually against idol anime (I've got one in my favourite list) but it kinda feels they are trying to force idols in wherever they can without considering whether it is a good match. I hope I'm wrong on this but l get the impression that idols and SW is not the beat match.

The other one sounds like a straight up SOL, which could work, I mean the franchise was I think often best when it was being an sol and it wasn't the most serious story there was. I think it really depends on how they handle the characters.

One of the reasons Eva is a great story and one I find isn't mentioned much is that Eva it is one of the few series to actually address that fact that having teens in such militarily important and difficult tasks has it's issues. So often it seems that the entire military is composed of no one older than 19 and sending in a 12 year old is a sound strategy.

Now one could point to Strike witches but in it's defence I don't think it was meant to be taken that seriously. It's a sexy adventure not a psychological study of adolescents in war. And besides SW at least tries to justify it in universe.
