I really enjoyed your reviews, even though they were so few.

Yeah, I completely feel you. I merely cannot comprehend how people were able to enjoy the travesty that was Eva 2.0, especially the fans of the original. It's a watered-down "retelling", which has more in common Michael Bay's creations rather than NGE. As for 3.0... sigh... These movies shouldn't have been made.

I did not mean to dismiss the series but rather that t is not the sort of heavy, war story that LOTGH is. And that's fine while those stories are great in the hands of a good writer when done badly they end up being death obbessed, over dark crap . SW isn't trying to be that it uses war to make a context, a backdrop, for a a character ensemble story.

I've been reconsidering having idols in the franchise and yes I think you are right it could work morale support would certainly be an issue in such a time.

Some further thoughts on the new Strike witches series. So we getting idol witches, now I am not actually against idol anime (I've got one in my favourite list) but it kinda feels they are trying to force idols in wherever they can without considering whether it is a good match. I hope I'm wrong on this but l get the impression that idols and SW is not the beat match.

The other one sounds like a straight up SOL, which could work, I mean the franchise was I think often best when it was being an sol and it wasn't the most serious story there was. I think it really depends on how they handle the characters.

One of the reasons Eva is a great story and one I find isn't mentioned much is that Eva it is one of the few series to actually address that fact that having teens in such militarily important and difficult tasks has it's issues. So often it seems that the entire military is composed of no one older than 19 and sending in a 12 year old is a sound strategy.

Now one could point to Strike witches but in it's defence I don't think it was meant to be taken that seriously. It's a sexy adventure not a psychological study of adolescents in war. And besides SW at least tries to justify it in universe.

So Mother's Basement released a video not long ago on why he thinks HSOTD is a masterpiece. While I don't hate the series and agree with him a a few points, the directing of the action scenes is good I won't deny it that, calling it a masterpiece is a bit of a stretch to be honest.

According to him and in opposition to what I had thought it does have a point. If that is true(and he isn't just over reading it) I would argue that having a point doesn't mean having a good one.

A message saying that adults are incompetent (or evil) and the whole system must be smashed to let the kids show them how it's done is the sort of nonsense I'd imagine coming from some angry pretend anarchic student like Rick from the Young Ones.

What I found most objectionable about the series is what a few of the commentors and ThePedanticRomatic have remarked on. That is it's horrendously sexist attitudes. I'm not talking of the fan service, which I don't have much against (heck I like Strike witches and Keijo) but rather an attitude that a woman's duty is to obey her man and he has the right, no the duty to use violence to make them obey. Like one commenter it's not that it's a sexual fantasy that's I don't like but that it's an alt right sexual fantasy.

For a story that's supposedly promoting rebelling against authority it's rather authoritarian promoting a view of tearing down democratic authority in favour of rule of the strong.

Oh have you watched Brave witches

I just read the comment you plced on raegazel's profile that goes " it basically turns the original message on its head when it tells me to "stop whining and be a man".
That's not the human message of the original show, which basically wanted to take down all this stupid macho pretense and allow yourself to be fragile."

That is one of the best summations of what made Eva so great, it was one of the few series that was willing to say it's okay to be human and not some sort of superman.

It's not that I don't give credit for those very well written and three dimensional characters, because, well, they are well written and all. My problem is that everything seems (including characters) to be set up in a way so it'll all end up as bad as possible. Unlikeable characters are fine, as long as they don't overshadow everything else. And with Shinji's case in NGE the ending just left me (like almost everyone else) shouting "get in the damn robot". It was like the show itself was making excuses to just not get Shinji in the eva, to not get the plot forward.

The new version.... has nice animation and action. And that's about it. It doesn't explain all the world of Evangelion like the show did, nor does it add anything new to it. Without having the prior knowledge from the TV version I would have no bloody idea what is happening 80% of the time. So the only thing left is seeing what happens next, and I can give them credit for not just recycling plot again. But it's all hollywood action movie stuff. Well made, and well paced, but shallow, even without comparing to NGE. Both version just have flaws that make it hard for me to say I genuinely like them. (though if 3.0 wasn't called evangelion, it would be a great standalone movie)

And sorry for the tone of the last comment. I guess I had lots of salt build up somewhere, and let them out on you.
Vasilivros Feb 2, 2017 2:59 PM
In your 2.0 review you're just as whiny as Shinji if not more. You complain about things that are not even in the movie just to make it look worse than it is. This review is essentially a tantrum of an edgy critic. I'm not saying the movie is good, hell no, I'm saying you suck at explaining your opinion. So in writing reviews too.

Those are really good points about 3.33. I was lenient on it because it seems so far removed from the original Eva that I didn't even register 3.33 as a part of the same story. But you're right, thematically it is almost antithetical to the original series. Though arguably those revisionist themes began in 2.22 and only developed further in the third film.

I don't see any way the fourth film can give a satisfactory conclusion at this point. Maybe Anno knows this and it's part of the reason why the fourth film doesn't seem to be a production priority compared to his other projects. Meh. We'll see.
