Global streaming platform Netflix unveiled a new anime project tentatively titled Grimm during the Netflix Animation Studio Focus Panel at the 2021 Annecy International Film Festival on Tuesday. The panel also revealed a teaser visual (pictured). The final title of the anime project has yet to be revealed.

The anime series will be based on the fairy tales by the Grimm brothers and will interweave elements of horror and suspense. Wit Studio (Shingeki No Kyojin) is producing the anime project, with Michiko Yokote (xxxHOLiC) penning the script. All-female Japanese manga group CLAMP (Blood-C) is credited for the original character designs.

sounds and looks dope, i just hope the writing will be good, as a lot of these aesthetically pleasing originals have pretty bad dialogue and such.

I never liked clamp's character designs but Michiko Yokote is a fairly capable writer. Her patlabor TV episodes were great.
Since it's about the Grimm brothers the geeky side of me wants a reference to Grimm's law and Deutsche Mythologie.

It will be much more difficult for Netflix to have poor writing again since the Grimm brothers laid everything out for them, but I still have confidence they’ll mess something up

Ah, so this must be part of CLAMP's collaboration with Netflix as stated last year!
Was just about to ask again what happened to that, good to finally hear news about it.

Anyway... CLAMP? Grimm Brothers' fairy tales? That girl's red hair style? Hey I'm sold, maybe I'll give this anime a try sometime.

You do realize Netflix doesn't actually write on these but mostly just gives the studio money so they can have more anime on their site right? Netflix has barely any influence on shows' creative decisions, writing, directing, etc. They are literally just hosting the show, but other than the name Netflix they don't have staff members working on it.

CLAMP let's goo

Combining horror and Grimm huh. The orginal versions of some of their tales tend to be pretty grim by today's standards, I wonder if they're gonna try to go off of that.

The studio doesn’t handle the writing. Usually Netflix hires out the writing. And yes, Netflix doesn’t handle much internally, but they do more than just throw money at a studio including who they hire to do the writing and what not

No the staff members at the studio are those who do most of the work including the writing. Netflix is literally a streaming website that purchases the rights to the shows. The majority of Netflix original anime are not being helped on writing-wise by Netflix. Netflix is basically a distributor and if you look at the staff members for the Majority of Netflix originals you can see that Netflix plays very little part in how a story plays out. At most Netflix gives them the number of episodes they have to work with.

Looking more stuff up Eden is pretty much one of their first actually "made" by Netflix because they had more involvement in that compared to other series. So as of now the majority of Netflix Original Anime isn't done by Netflix just distributed basically. Here is a source for Eden. Quite interesting. And answers why most anime are not "made" by Netflix. Because even Eden has mostly Japanese staff members and was still mostly done in Japan by Japanese directors and staff members.

https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/what-makes-eden-netflixs-first-japanese-original-anime/

All it takes is to do a bit of googling and you can see why the majority of anime being made are not helped that much by Netflix. They are trying to do more now but really haven't done so. Therefore atm most stuff being made for it is still primarily not Netflix's work.

Even in this small amount of info in this thread that we have gotten, the staff members are all Japanese.

regardless, mangakas don’t have the amount of creative control as they do In traditional production committee environments. Also, interesting that you mention Eden as being done mostly in Japan when outside of a few senior staff positions, all of the animation was done in China.

That I do agree with. Mangaka rarely have much if any creative control on adaptations. And I mean that whole most of the animation was done in China thing is a whole other bag of worms. As a lot of anime outsource their animation to China Korea and other places as well. Some anime are literally more a South Korean production than a Japanese one XD. But yeah I don't know everything about that Eden anime for sure. It is a really weird anomaly at this point even with other studios outsourcing their animation to foreign lands. Weird time we live in I suppose.

Thanks for taking my response in kind though :)

Sounds promissing.

LOL a the people thinking Netflix does write their own animays...yes, they are mostly bad, but they have nothing in common in their production, besides the same streaming platform paying for it's production.
