Let's say your friend who has never watched anime in his/hers entire life wants to start watching anime but doesn't know where to start, what would you recommend them to start with so they can easily progress further in the anime world without losing interest or getting turned off.

depending on the friend I usually recommend them OPM or death note.

to the mods:

Well it depends on which genre they're into. If they like action/shounen then Hunter x Hunter or One Punch Man.

For Romance probably Your Name or A Silent Voice.

Death Note and Attack On Titan were perfect gateway animes for me. Now it will be a different story if the person already has a preference in a specific genre.

There is no perfect first anime. You should ask them about what shows they already like and recommend based on that. But if you know nothing about their tastes then I say Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood cuz it has some of everything. Death Note has no action, Attack on Titan might be too violent, One Punch Man only has one good season

Just ask them what the already like it base it off of that. Remember you cant give them an anime thats too anime like(fanservice, etc) just gradually progress them. Death note would probably be a good first anime. But remember you dont want to recommend them something too good.
I gave up on character of the week since it takes too much thinking. I'll just change my forum pfp to whoever I want every week lol.

There is no right answer to this first anime should be enjoyed naturally on that persons time and then if whatever they watched was okay enough for them to seek out more then you could maybe give a recommendation to something.

I think 60% of cases that I've personally and recently witnessed start with one of One Punch Man, Death Note, or Attack on Titan. Personally, I think the first two are fantastic for introducing people to the medium, and either one can be recommended depending on which way the person might lean.

I don't think Attack on Titan is a good starting anime, simply because I think it's too good of one. It's so easy to get behind, so easy to hyped for, and so easy to love. It's a surefire way to get em in, but it could prevent the person that started from getting into the rest solely from pessimistic comparison.

For me, the start was OPM, but I can see Death Note or My Hero Academia being another fantastic start, and maybe something like Toradora for people that don't like action.

Perfect?! There isn't one, i think. "People with Choices". Start with whatever you want.

That's one thing but, there are also those ANIME which are liked by most newbies.

If i had to recommend someone, there are many aspects i will have to consider.

One generally (most likely) doesn't recommend HENTAI to a little Kid.

A few years ago, I would have said that One Punch Man (season 1) or Fairy Tail were the best beginner anime to watch, since those are what I started on, but after watching a certain show, there really isn't any other choice in my opinion. I would recommend Gintama as an amazing starting anime. Yes, it might be long, but in my opinion it has everything you would need to get into anime. It has amazing characters that develop and change over the course of the story, an amazing story that lasts throughout the anime with just as good side stories, and great comedy and emotional scenes .

Yeah, I mostly agree, except if the watcher is more mature MHA might not be a good suggestion, because I've heard there's a lot of plot armor, and the fan base seems generally childish ( I haven't watched it myself but I know "childish" and "mature" watchers of the show)
OPM is a decent suggestion but there's nothing special about it. no special plot either.

Death Note is the perfect one, it's not a perfect anime, but it's a good name to break the otaku stereotype.
Lots of people never try anime because they think that anime is for kids, Death Note's mood isn't "otaku-ish" and helps to break this prejudice.

And there's more, Death Note isn't too long. I want to shove my hand in my ass when someone says "What anime should I start?" "Why don't you watch ONE PIECE?" "Why don't you try NARUTO?"

For the god's sake, Naruto has 700 episodes, One Piece'll have more than 2000 (my prophecy).

If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Kafka, Fu Xuan, Jingliu, Topaz and Huohuo.

The moment you think there is a 'perfect' first anime is the moment you went wrong. If there was such a thing, we'd already have found it, and there wouldn't be any need for this discussion. This obviously depends on the person you recommend stuff to, but Death Note really is a safe choice. One Punch Man in my opinion not so much. Boku no Hero Academia might actually be a good start for some people though. If we go romance, I'd chhose something like Working or Kanojo Okarishimasu, I guess. Definitely not Kaguya-sama. Mahoutsukai no Yome might make a good choice as well.

Most people who have never watched Anime usually have the notion that all Anime is either cartoon pornography, or is about a guy with overpowered abilities bolting around all over the place challenging people to "duels" thus, I don't consider shows that feature physical powers to be a good first Anime for most people.

To name a few shows that I'd think would be great for a newcomer:
1 - Death Note. I can speak from personal experience with this show that it is a show that literally everybody can enjoy, no matter their age. It might not be a show that'll turn somebody into a full-fledged Anime fan who seeks more, but, it'd be a show that'd hit a home run for most people. My parents loved it, my brother loved it and my grandparents loved it, but, neither of them became "Anime fans" despite constantly talking about how much they loved the show. Even my parents constantly reference the Shinigami now.

2 - Monster. This show is almost double the length of Death Note, however, when placed in context to western shows (which most of our families and friends watch) the show is very short. This show is especially good because whilst it is an Anime, it is very westernized; by it being set in places in Europe, which helps many newcomers to Anime feel comfortable with its setting, due to feeling familiar rather than alien (like many other Anime that are set in Japan.)
Monster has always been a perfect show to show newcomers to Anime, as it isn't much different from what they are used to in their western media, and this show especially has an heavy emphasis on portraying its characters as realistic, rather than it having some characters merely fabricated for the sake of telling a story,

I won't go on. I have no idea how I typed out all this already.

Can someone explain to me why OPM is a beginner anime, It's a freaking parody. You usually watch something and then the parody of it to get most of the jokes, So isn't watching stuff like DBZ and other shows where the MC is really powerful and then watching OPM where they make it comedically extreme a more sensible route ?

OPM was one of my first shows and even though I liked it, I found a lot of scenes significantly more hilarious after delving into anime culture and seeing a lot of the OP protagonist trope.

Also, My answer on OP's question would be Death note, Not too long and not too short, Not too anime-like (No lolis or over the top comedy), And the appeal of it can be appreciated even in other mediums, For example something like K-ON! or Takagi-san are good but they're good in unique ways that you mostly find in anime, On the other hand most people would like cleverness in their shows, Same thing with good, melancholic music and grim artwork even if they come from different mediums.

In my pre-teen years, the one that really got everybody was Death Note. It's even mentioned on this thread a lot! Death Note is really fantastic about hooking with its premise that can appeal to even ardent anime-haters, but offering a lot of the best style, drama, character work, and art in the business.

AwokenStroken said:

I think most people are likely to really enjoy one of those, but I think it's kind of a tough start just because they're all so long. If someone's just starting an anime show and is used to American seasons of 10-20 episodes, a thousand-episode One Piece can look pretty intimidating.

Sword Art Online. Unironically. It has almost every single genre and trope in, and as much as I hate the idea of "bringing other people to anime" or forcing someone into it, I think that SAO is probably the best series to recommend other people that are showing the interes of getting into this "world".

Except this, I would definitely AVOID any series that is pandering to westerners like Cowboy Bebop or Monster - it's nothing but giving a false idea of what anime really is.
Same for never ending battle shounen series. If someone would show me something like this to me when I didn't know anime yet, I'd be an anime hater now probably

Firstly, there is no perfect anime one can recommend, no matter how much one knows one's preferences.

Though if I were to recommend AN anime to someone who hasn't seen any, then I'd best know what they like, dislike, and expect in a series (either pos/neg expectations). I also need to recommend something short which is able to convey the story well, without prolonging (48+ episodes) or cutting too short (<6 episodes). We're trying to get this person into anime relatively quickly, so giving someone an extremely long series (especially short series which may disappoint the viewer) will not help at all.

As this is a recommendation in general (not counting anyone's preferences other than genre), I would recommend those who like action themes Noragami, Demon Slayer, 91 Days or possibly Log Horizon for the adventure/action.

Dramatic series recommendations would go to Angel Beats or Violet Evergarden, with my picks for Mystery being Shinrei Tantei Yakumo and Hyouka.

Romance would likely be Chuunibyou or Working!!, then Non Non Biyori/Yuru Camp for the SOL enthusiasts (though it is very unlikely for most beginners to get into anime through heavy-sol series).

Yeah, but won't they like it more if they watched it later ? Like there are many other shows with good animation and decent comedy that don't take much concentration to enjoy.

Just a few days ago there was a topic about 10 best beginner anime. Let me shamefully copy my post from there...:

Lets see. For a total beginner, it might be good to get to know an recommandable anime of very different genre and settings. I think as a beginner, the person itself doesnt really know what their taste will be, so better try a bit of everything.

Additionally, I think suggesting very long anime like One Piece or Naruto (even though they might be good... lets say they are.) are not suited for a beginner because its too big of a commitment. If you dont know what you like, but then are caught in a 50+ episode show that you dont enjoy is no fun. So I think its better to stick to 1 or 2-cour anime.

Now what would be a good mixed bag of short, recommendable anime that cater to different likes but are easily enjoyed.. I conducted the following meal to serve for a fresh beginner to start out their anime adventure.

1. For the Action serving: Psycho-Pass
2. For the Romance serving: Toradora
3. For the Drama serving: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
4. For the mystery serving: Made in Abyss
5. For the comedy serving: Danshikoukousei no Nichijou
6. For the Fantasy serving: Violet Evergarden
7. For the Sports serving: Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru
8. For the Slice of Life serving: Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
9. For the Thriller serving: Yakusoku no Neverland
10. For the Sci-Fi serving: Kiseijuu

Honorbale mention that didnt make the list even though it would meet all my criteria: Steins Gate (because anime that hit the same vein are already chosen: Kiseijuu, Yakusoku no Neverland)

Of course this menu is somewhat influenced by my own tastes or favorites, but I tried to stay away from anime that only I seem to enjoy. I think the ones listed are widely accepted as "okay" anime at least. Its easy to find someone who would recommend like One Piece (too long), Sword Art Online (very polarizing opinions) or Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (somewhat niche) and those are all fine and enjoyed by some. But in my list I tried to decide against those for reasons stated above.

If I would have to decide on a single one from this list... I would give it to Yakusoku no Neverland
I have written my own Ecchi short story. It is called Nopan Mahou Shoujo!
You can find the PDF here or read it online on Wattpad or on Archive of Our Own.

it's deffo not perfect but its defietly not bad. opm is a show everybody can like. A good show is going to be worse in one way. the better the show, the more people it's "bad" for
