I have discord but I don't really understand it.
It feels really intimate to be talking to literal strangers on that app. I guess it just makes me uncomfortable, so I prefer the forums here where I can maintain a degree of distance.

I prefer Discord for one-one-one chats and group games. However, servers can get a bit overwhelming, especially if they’re large.

So I’d say that the forums are more preferable when interacting with the general community. I’ve had some nice memories here that simply can’t be replicated on Discord.

Forums.

I only like to use Discord when talking with friends. In larger servers, the chat's going a 100 mph because all these different people are posting at once, making it difficult for me to follow a discussion. Not only that, but it's hard for me to get into a conversation because I often find that that what's being said is something I have no interest or knowledge in. So I just end up sitting there with nothing to say unlike a forum where the topics are laid out in front of me and I can find something that I feel comfortable talking about.

Forum because I'm typing on a forum.

Discord can be really good if the senior members of your niche interest are receptive to questions. Zoomers tend to be more on the impressionistic side, and rather than creating dense archives, find it easier to build a concise frame of reference, and just answer questions as they come in.

Forums are alright in the long-term, but so often you miss half the picture, and there's nowhere to find help. The way I see it is that a good Discord server feeds on discussion unrelated to the subject matter to fuel the continued existence of its potential. The worst feeling with IRC and Skype was that they were too intimate and awful at basic archiving. It feels like barging in. It's a lot more welcoming to have a wide variety of directions you can go than just #general, with discussion organized in each of them. Puts the emphasis off people and on subjects.

Forums anytime. Discord needs you to give your damn phone number so I stay away from it.
Discord becoming more secular and doing things like this makes me want to give up and call it Messenger 2. Being unable to run multiple accounts for testing because of this is obnoxious.

It depends, I like small Discord Servers that feel like a family, you know? But I am not a fan of the huge servers, because the chat is going too fast, too many people are chatting, its hard to keep up with the chat.

Forums are cool because you have time to type the reply, and you got several topics going on.

I mainly use Discord for chatting with close friends or small-knit groups. For general chatting in a public space, forums is much more preferable.

Same with above, Discord for friends or small group, Forum for public chatting.

Public server is Discord can be too chaotic that I can't even introduce myself properly or joining the convo

Forums are better. Group chats never go into much depth and is too fast paced to keep up. Very easy to get left out of a conversation when it turns into something you don't care about or aren't online same time as other people.

Both can be pretty miserable. On one hand, most people I'm around on Discord flinch at the sight of anything longer than a couple of sentences and are extremely rooted in concepts that'd get them laughed out of a discussion forum. Think my favorite was when I was accused of just trying to scare people away by writing stuff at length.

Plus side is that they run away easier and are less familiar with cheap rhetoric tactics. Here, you can very easily get into a super prolonged discussion about pointless bullshit with all of the toxicity and dickishness and have it go on for a few hours or so. There, they run away after 5 minutes.

On the small Discord server I log in (Rewrite), people are definitely not willing to discuss much in general and the average length of a reply is five words... As long as there are more than four or five people, the replies go so fast that any interesting topic gets dismissed in a few minutes. On the funny side, the best comment I got was: "Meusnier just flexing his knowledge on us normies smh"

Otherwise, Discord is quite good to discuss with a single person, but the upper limit of 2000 characters is a pain. Not as much as the lower limit of 30 characters here though...
