Hello fellow cultured individuals. Today I pose another question for all of you.

What are your thoughts on Yaoi and shounen ai?

I really like shounen ai. I'm trying to delve more into the world little by little and enjoy many of its anime at my own pace.

Yaoi I am less experienced with as an art form. We know in other ways I'm an expert ;)

But yeah, do you like, love, dislike or even loathe the onslaught of the gay anime boys.

Not my cup of tea, but I'm not the target audience anyway.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Used to be a yaoi fangirl when I was younger but now I just like good ships regardless of the orientation. When I consume BL I prefer doujins of ships I like over original works.

I more identify with the "yumejoshi" label if anything.

Okay, I'm not entirely aware of the difference between the two. I guess shounen ai is more for women?

Anyways, I've only seen yaoi. There isn't a whole lot of it out there (at least compared to Yuri). I guess I like it. I find something about it oddly attractive.

Yaoi is romance between male characters which may or may not have physical relationship.

For the umpteenth time, Shounen-ai is sexual relationship between an adult women and an underage boy and a sub-genre of Hentai.

As for my interest, I watch none because neither interests me.

yaoi=Sexually explicit male/male anime, manga, and visual novels for a female audience, (EG Hadaka Shitsuji, Sensitive Pornograph) this term is rarely used in Japan anymore.
Shounen ai: Non-explicit homoerotic shojo or josei manga and anime (EG, Gravitation, Sukisho). Again this term is rarely used in Japan anymore and has fallen out of favor in the west as well.

In Japan the entire spectrum is just referred to as "BL" and the "for a female audience" is the key part of the definition of BL, therefore bara and otokonoko stuff is not BL.

I love it like I love my rom coms, maybe a bit more.
But I despise the various tropes that occur frequently, like the constant rape (Dakaretai Otoko).
I used to be those hardcore fujoshis but mellowed out when I realized how disgusting I was. Now, I wish people would not generalize yaoi.

I have a strange relationship with it.

I'd like to say I love mature, well-thought-out gay ships (a la Mo Dao Zu Shi), even if it is only fanon (i.e. xxxHolic), and I don't like shows that focus purely on the physical.

But then there's stuff like Junjou Romantic that walk the line between sweet relationship and pure (sexy) smut that I also love.

And then, to take it a step further, there's stuff like Killing Stalking, like we were talking about.

And of course, there are the shows that are just straight-up boring/bad (which is, sadly, a good amount)...

I think I'm more defined by what I don't ship:

Ciel/Sebastian (I'm not one for shota ships)
Ritsu/Soubi (for the same reason)
Alastor/Angel Dust (I love the "Angel flirts, Alastor rejects" dynamic, but for any fan art that shows them making out (or more) ... e.e Alastor is ace, and therefore he wouldn't do that. Odd frenemieship? Yes. Literal relationship? No).

There's probably more I can say, but my brain is poop at the moment o(*^▽^*)o

I don't have a fetish for rape and Stockholm syndrome, the characters being gay or sometimes selectively and questionably gay doesn't make it an exception to that rule so overall I dislike shounen-ai and hate yaoi. It would have been quite a different story if the genre had more series like Given and less of rapey stuff like Junjou Romantica but the genre has reached a point where simply having a healthy relationship would be praised even if it's otherwise uninteresting and bland.

I prefer shounen-ai out of the two, if it is a wholesome relationship and the characters strenghten each other in some way.

I prefer anime that doesn't go with the standard formula of a submissive character and a dominant one, since that's literally been done to death.

I'll admit I love reading yaoi and shounen ai, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. I've read so much of it that almost none has made it onto my manga list since I can't remember what I've read and what I haven't.

I feel like yaoi has a lot of what I find to be kind of disgusting relationship dynamics like siblings relationships or ones that stem from forms of rape or sexual harassment but so do lots of other genres so I don't really have anything against it.

Now it became overall much better than a decade ago.
When I came across many Junjou Romantica years ago I was so disgusted that I didn't watch anime for quite a time haha. Then I came back to it to read a lot of this stuff or amusement. :D
Also I had the feeling that this type of female authors from the icky kind of yaoi never knew a gay person and couple themselves and I'm sure most of them don't.
Also my girlfriend and I amuse ourselves very much over some Yuri manga too.

I formed an opinion quite a bit ago where I never hated the idea of Yaoi or Shounen Ai, I just hated the execution. I kept seeing the same Yaoi format but only tiny differences like taking a piece of Yaoi and basically remaking it but instead the Seme is the Uke, the Uke wears glasses, or other such changes that don't warrant new works. Also I do not have great opinions on the art I've seen. I really don't like shitting on artists who make a living in niche communities because that in itself is admirable, but man there's too many examples of bad Yaoi art with the weirdest body proportions.

Hopefully my opinion is outdated now and you Yaoi fans actually get better shit than what I saw a decade or so ago.

I also have no problem with yuri. I've watched and enjoyed Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and the first season of YuruYuri (I'm currently reading the manga version of the former and watching the second season of the latter).

What little I have dared to see (for good reason) in anime, the majority of content is explicit in nature and has some level of submission-dominance involved.

There is more prominent sexual content in yaoi, but the genre is limited in anime so I can't speak much for it.

Shonen-ai (literally "boys-love". I saw someone complaining about the specifics of the genre and I had to point out this word usage is probably only a disambiguation like "hentai") appears to be a more cultivated relationship. However most have some twist to drive the story toward a sub-dom relationship, as mentioned before.

There is more mainstream content in recent years that has cultivated more "healthy" relations that feel natural instead of forced. The most prominent is, of course, being Yuri!! on Ice (although not labeled as either in its genres) and the most recent being Given. There is also Doukyuusei, which forced me to accept the genre can have good content.

If I got anything wrong, it is likely due to misconceptions of the genres in general. The original poster did ask for our thoughts, after all.

Sometimes you just gotta realize that you can't watch every
anime you want to. The struggle is far too real for that.

This opinion is based off the only 2 yaoi anime I have watched. And they were fucking horrible.
I dropped Yuri on Ice 8 episodes in, I felt like strangling all the characters and mentally cringed at every interaction between the main characters.
The 2nd yaoi was an absolute horror, sat through all 12 episodes just because it was on crunchyroll; DAKAICHI. To put it simple gay sex and rape then become lovers and more gay sex. Disturbing in every way possible and the characters were horrid. One main character is a tsundere and just loves being sexually assulted by the other dude but at the same time doesn't consent to it and whines. Also the actual name for the yaoi is 'DAKAICHI -I'm being harassed by the sexiest man of the year-' which basically explains the story.

Put it simply yaoi is fucking disgusting.

Not interested in romantic drama and homoromance in general but I'd appreciate a wholesome, less dramatic more comedic romance with little to no weird sexual implications. My cis-gender teenage mind tends to avoid yaoi stuff but I'll surely watch good ones later in my life when I'm less insecure about those stuff.
Till then I'll enjoy my cis-romcoms

Q.) Does this sound homophobic or as being picky about the stuff I want ?

I'll admit I like it and no one can deny it has become much better over the past few years with better character dynamics, lot less rape/sexual harrasment posed as "cute",heck quite a few of shonen ai/yaoi stories can be on par with regular romance stories, even some critically aclaimed ones. That wasn't a thing in the past, but I'm so glad more and more authors are starting to experiment and stay away from the toxic formula from earlier works.

Whether it's mixed in with gore, mindbreak, and is really fuckin creepy, hilarious comedy that actually makes fun of old tropes,or just plain adorable BL offers a variety for a pallette of tastes. You may like the R18 part (yaoi at its finest),or you prefer the cuter side (shonen ai at its finest).

All I know is that authors (both male and female) have gotten more skillful in depicting healthy relationships (or deliberately unhelathy ones-in the horror subgenre-not on the pretense it's cute) and that's what matters.

You just had to watch DakaIchi *facepalms* I can assure you,the manga for DakaIchi is the same and as a person who usually enjoys BL stuff that thing grossed me out no all levels, simply because it sticks to the ancient formula of "oh no.I'm being harrased by this guy and I don't like it. what to do now. Eh,I guess it's ok. I'm actually for some goddamn reason starting to fall in love with him (?)" and so on.
