THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Awesome episode.

Really smart plan that took me by surprise.

The kid waving at an enemy pilot was a great trigger for showing the other side's humanity.

Amuro having to shoot down the pilots who helped the lady was great too, this show keeps packing in compelling stuff and continues to surprise me. 70's viewers were spoilt with the awesomeness on display here.

Kai shows backbone. Nice!

"This is St. Ange!?" - dumb irresponsible woman who put her son in danger. WTF did you expect? Those refugess are so dumb, they'll be converted to Zeon's side now.

lol at the ending. Serves her right though, honestly, her and those other people on WB were so selfish and annoying.

And yeah, the tactics used in this show are pretty impressive so far, I'm really liking it.

I don't understand why the entire crew of White Base seems to hate Kai... He tries to crack a joke, and they act like he's a traitor or something. :-P

Really liking this series so far - the only major issue is that the Gundam is broken. It's taken out dozens of Zaku (and tanks, and planes) without so much as a scratch. It'll be nice once Zeon finds a good way to fight it.

I can't believe I never got around to watching this series before; shame on me! D<

YES, we finally got rid of those old people. They annoyed me beyond comprehension.

Yes, very sexy episode, very compelling, and a lot of development.
I love how they're taking on the 'fine line between good and evil' idea. It makes things much more interesting, and makes it difficult to pick a side.
Btw Char is pro.

Yeah that was great stuff. Also the revelation that Char is using the other commander and considers him a mega n00b.

The new mobile suit and the gundam really remind me of the old Transformers series I used to watch as a kid. I thought that shit was so original, I had no idea how hard they were ripping off the Japanese. Anyway, I'm glad I decided to give this series a chance rather than judging it based on what I've seen of Gundam Wing.

Man Amuro had to grab that shield out of a lot of robots.

I don't like the way the white base goes about things, constant back handed tactics. I mean those two Zeon pilots seem the nicest people in this show so far.

Great episode.

While watching, I get a kick out of this dub. I don't see anyone in this cast with a different VA.
Also, Kai's Guncannon debut was awesome. I'm starting to like him more.

I really enjoyed Kai in this episode.
He really seems to be the most human of the bunch.
Cracking jokes to hide his fears, helping his friends with everything he has.
I loooooved how he kept fighting after he ran out of ammo, saving Amuro's ass by shoving the Zaku off a cliff.
-laughs-

Those two Zeon pilots too. I was glad they didn't bite the dust. Was fully expecting them to die, and was given a nice treat.

Very good episode, I really enjoyed this compared to the earlier episode. I'm loving the morally gray route this show is taking, as in no side is evil. Still, I'm not 100 % sold on the show just yet.

It's like Amuro's side is now the bad guys.

This show has some of the dumbest characters ever.

Yes, let's throw a mother and a child who can barely talk into a stranded earth!

Pretty good episode, this show is improving.

I like how they showed the humanity of the Zeon forces, makes the show much more interesting than the old "good vs. evil" crap.

I hated that stupid woman.

Probably because he comes across as a negative person who has no confidence in winning the battles. Being pessimist in such tense situations doesn't exactly motive his team mates.

I was expecting the two Zeon pilots to be executed for being humane as well.

The Gundam never seems to take any damage. I mean, I can believe that it hasn't been damaged enough to be in any sort of critical condition, but I wish they'd at least mention making minor repairs between each engagement.

I'm just gonna pretend this show is about Char from now on. I've had this show on-hold for over three months before picking it up again because of how ridiculously dull Amuro is. Pretending this show is about Char will make the show more enjoyable, methinks. :/

I've got to say that this post is so incredibly naive that I'm surprised no one has commented on it. This is WAR, WB is trying to win and survive here and if Amuro hadn't shot to kill those two pilots, who were great guys by the way, he could have died. Also, when you are out numbered like White Base is you kind of have to utilize "under handed tactics".

Those Zeon pilots are pretty good guys. Oh well, they are totally gonna be killed by Gundam after raising those deathflags...

Gundam is pretty overpowered right now, IIRC only it's shield was cracked by Char in one battle. Apparently they have some spares.

Another ace episode :)

Amuro and crew were smart to trick Zeon and backstabbing them in the process.

Char was about to foil the plan, but he keeps telling himself that the sister he knows isn't that the type who plays aggressive like this.

I also love the show where either sides are not good or bad. They're just there to survive. Some are just following orders.

Frau being flirty is nice :)

The lady and her son should have expected the worse. I do hope she safely travels the lake to meet with the old people.

Lol Kai finally get's a taste of battle then he freaks out. I lol'd when he just pushed the Zaku when it was about to attack Amuro from behind.

Amuro throwing the shield pretty often can be OP :P

Can't wait for the next episode!

I felt bad for the two Zeon pilots who got shot down since they were actually nice, and it's good that I'm getting a feeling the Zeon's are actually alright in some respect. Makes it harder to figure out a side. Kai was pretty cool on the battlefield, and Ive seen a gif of that mobile suit shoving the zaku off the cliff before, now I know where it's from. Overall another cool episode.

Oh and as most people I'm glad all the old people are gone.

This episode was great. The comedic moments during the ceasefire helped lighten the mood. However, then it was contrasted back into the serious nature of the conflict when Amuro shot down that Zeon plane.
It's also interesting seeing the human side of the Zeon pilots, it makes the entire conflict have more weight to it.

The fight at the end of the episode was also pretty cool. Really solid episode here.

Wow. There was a lot to love in this episode. It's definitely the most compelling one so far.

First we have the Minovsky Particles contributing to the narrative, then we have both sides plotting to use the civilian drop to their advantage; we get to see Kai take on a bit of responsibility for a change, and we get so see Char deliberately choose to not help Garma so he looks bad; the humanity of the Zeon's is explored while keeping in mind the reality that they are still the enemy... just wow.

For those complaining that White Base's plan was "underhanded", that's called good tactics. You do realize that the White Base would have likely been destroyed, and those inside killed had they not come up with that plan, do you not? Being mad about the escort getting shot down earlier in the episode doesn't make sense either. Yes, they were very nice people- but they were also the enemy, and if they had reported back to base the White Base would, again, be screwed. Even if one side of the war is clearly the side in the wrong, that doesn't change that the soldiers and officers on each side are very much human, and can indeed be nice people. Those enemies who fled? They may have been nice people too, but they would be right back to trying to kill Amuro or others at another time if he let them go. This series hasn't been shy about this sort of thing before now; it's just made much more clear this time. Haven't you noticed the screams of enemy soldiers when their Zakus are destroyed? Why would you assume they're bad people? Merely because they're on the wrong side (assuming Zeon even is the wrong side)?

As the mother worded it, "No matter who wins or loses... it'll mean that there will be many more widows like me."

In other words, WAR SUCKS.

Still, I am happy those two men survived. They seemed like genuine people.

This episode made Amuro and his friends look bad. In a situation like this involving civilians you have to play it clean because otherwise there's no way you can deal future situations peacefully.

And besides that i'm surprised that anyone thinks that what happened in the episode constituted as good tactic.

No it was fucking stupid. There's no way that in a real life situation that the enemy would have let that container slide and even if they had then they would certainly have either checked the content after everyone left or blown the thing to pieces.

Writing like this i view as "convenient retardation"

It's really cheap way to make someone look good.

And this wasn't the first time that the show dipped to dump territory. I don't know on what episode it was (6-10) the enemy are dumbfounded that the gundam can leap into the air even though on the episode 10 it's shown that their "robots" can to the same exact thing.

I've been enjoying the heck out of this show but this episode was the first I well and truly loved. I think a lot of the gray ground other shows examine (a few episodes back Amuro freaking out into berserker and feeling bad about it, this episodes good soldiers and sad widow) are done in a way that is far more understated than I expected for a kids show from the 70s. The tactics may ocassionaly have flaws as stated above, but the show actually talks tactics and that too is impressive.

Also, after honking Kai was a jerk his Guncannon debut kicked ass! I'm a huge fan of th Guncannon, having two models of it, stoke to see it in action'

Episode summaries in frivolous things, but consistent in respect of the plot and of yet another battle, very well structured under the strategic plan, not boring confrontation between the Federation and Garma, who take them back, but Char takes a hand, that wise guy ! best episode so far. I guess this is all I could ask from Gundam - action, yes, but with something to say. quite provoking and self-aware, which is really important in a war type show. also very interesting military planning and stuff, puts me in the mood. still kinda bothered by how overpowered the gundam mobile suit is and the whole structure of "action every second of half of an episode", but definetly the best so far
