Sorry if this silly question have been asked before somewhere else, but somehow google searching it won't give me answer. Just curious whether shouting "ummiiiii!!!!" is an actual cultural thing in Japan or just anime/manga/game invention. I simply finds it odd if that's an actual thing in Japan since Japan is an archipelago country, so seeing sea wouldn't be something so rare or impressive.

They're just retarded. My first impulse after seeing the sea is attempting to get the further from it possible.

Japan maybe an archipelago but the main island is massive. If you are at the center of that, you'd less likely to have gone to the sea cause it's expensive to travel. You even need a passport to go to some other place in Japan. It's not like Singapore, Malaysia or the Philippines which is comprised mostly of small islands. Umi means sea after all

The first thing thing I'm going to do when I visit a beach in Japan is screaming umii.

Anime girls are just in wonder of the sea, let them be enchanted by it, it's beautiful

welp, op hasn't lived on an island confirmed. when you are actually on one you can't see the ocean/sea at all times, even on islands way smaller than some of japan's. sometimes you'll go days without seeing the water

Maybe this is something that comes from theater or radio theater.
A roundabout way to describe that this character has reached the ocean.

Was that's not how "normie" work on Japan? or people think still doing it because i don't think Japan nowadays have guts to shout like stupid people and get attention from public

Our world would be a better place if everyone did this. But alas.

it's probally just an overreaction of the joy of being at the beach

umi means sea in japanese so in order to keep an accurate depiction of autism in anime the anime characters have to shout umiiiiiiii so everyone knows its an umi

Isn't most anime take place in Tokyo and Tokyo has a port (not sure if it has accessible beach since i only googled it)?
Someone needs a passport to go to other part of their own country is new to me.
When i think of Malaysia, i think of the 2 big part of "island", the one that's connected to Asia continent and the one in Borneo though, and that's mostly where most Malaysian i know from.

I actually live in an archipelago country. It's not often for me to go to sea, it's not hard either to go visit one, but no one i've met IRL actually shout "sea!!" ecstatically like those anime/manga/game characters when they go to sea.

Like others said, it's an overexageration to make things look funnier and prepare the viewer for some fanservice. I tried it a few years ago but it sounds stupid in my language and my friends looked at me with eyes full of dread.

It's because the characters need to declare their exaggerated excitement to being at the sea and all the events related to being at the beach and at sea.

Oh wow you need a passport to travel back and forth around japan. That's some next level security.

I live less than 40km away from the sea and the last time I've been on a proper beach is almost three years ago, so the novelty factor of being on a beach is perfectly understandable.

Now the 'umi da's being realistic is a different matter, but it probably doesn't matter.

it's an extreme form of exposition that assumes the viewers are utterly dumb and too incompetent for 'show, don't tell' even in such obvious situations. If you'd leave it out, people would call the anime confusing and bad. 'How am I supposed to know where they are if they don't even tell me? Pretentious writing for snobs and overthinkers.' would be the anticipated reaction according to a study. Hence they started including expositionary lines to point out the setting for each scene. 'Umi!' 'Onsen!' 'Yama!'

If characters don't yell out their location in anime, you know you're watchin some elitist bullcrap.
I probably regret this post by now.

Because having characters loudly announce things the viewer was already aware of is one of the corner stones of anime.

I live in a coastal city, very close to a beach in the U.S. People don't scream umi obviously, but plenty of people get overly excited when running out onto the beach. Even people who live here, right next to it. I think the beach is just a place where you can go wild regardless of time, age, or where you live. It's always a fun place.

Umi is the japanese word for sea, so when they say "Umi da!" they are saying "It's the beach!" if you're asking why they say it
i dunno

I've tried yelling "Oooohhhh" moderately loudly (not shouting but definitely more than loud enough for the entire room to hear) and holding it for about 3-4 seconds. It's more like a celebratory yell or a loud sign of relief, but people will look at you slightly shocked at the outburst.

However, you'd be surprised how quickly people get used to you being loud.

Because they have to stretch out the episode. Also, living on an island or in a country that is quite close to the sea doesn't mean you have to have went to the sea at one point in your life. I live less than 50 km away from the sea, and I've only been there like once.
