| -Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso -Clannad: After Story -Violet Evergarden -Anohana -Angel Beats! For me it's in that exact order. Shigatsu is the saddest anime I've watched. It's a really close one between this and Clannad and both consistently make me cry, but Shigatsu sticks to the sadness until the very end, while Clannad has a happy ending. Shigatsu's ending is both amazingly beautiful and very tragic. Clannad AS is second. Episode 18 is the single most touching anime episode I've seen and never fails to make me cry and several other scenes surrounding it are also quite emotional. The ending harms the impact a bit but whenever I watch ep 16 - 21 I still get very emotional. Violet is third. Ep 7 - 13 all contained some extremely emotional scenes. Especially ep 7 and 10 make me quite sad. The beautiful animation and music really enhance this. Anohana then. There's a big gap between Anohana and Violet for me. Anohana has plenty of sadness scattered throughout the show reaching its peak at the beautiful episode 10, but I can't stand the last episode (ep 11). All the shouting, cheesy hide-and-seek game, synchronized crying and melodrama just didn't do it for me and made me cringe more than feeling sad. Angel Beats is last. While I really like the show overall, I simply didn't find it standing out in sadness. I'm quite confused actually. I mean, the characters have tragic backgrounds which is rather common in anime. Episode 10 was pretty emotional but not necessarily that sad, and the ending was bittersweet at first and then turned into a happy ending. I really don't get why it's considered one of the saddest anime. I actually found stuff like Aria and K-On much more impactful because I actually cared a lot about the characters. |

| shigatsu made me shed a tear almost every episode no lie. anohana had some sad moments but not even comparable wasnt a big fan of that anime. violet evergarden had me crying a few times too. had to drop clannad because of the character design unfortunately because i think i would like the anime. never watched angel beats. Shigatsu number 1 by far |

| I haven't watched Shigatsu, but okay. Clannad After Story is a clear tragedy. Number 1. Angel Beats! is very sad but it also has a lot of comedy before the emotional heaviness comes. Number 2. Anohana and Violet Evergarden are actually positive portrayals of life in the end, tragedy is something in the background of the characters they have to move on from. I'd say Violet Evergarden takes the cake here because the drama it deals with is more extreme and disturbing. |

| Angel Beats was very tragic,but I thought it had the worst execution. Clannad was a great drama,but ended on a positive note,same for Violet Evergarden and Anohana. First place goes to Shigatsu in this case,the ending was just heartbreaking. |

I would recommend trying to watch it and AS even if it feels painfully boring and retarded at times. |

At least Air, Kanon and Clannad. I think KyoAni's modern female character design is some of the best in the industry. I mean, look at Violet. |

| I didn't find AnoHana sad, more like ironically comedic. Shigatsu managed to make me shed a tear, though there were too many flaws to make me care in the long run. Still, it wins, since I haven't seen the other 3. |

| All of these are melodramatic shows and while there's nothing inherently wrong with it, only Clannad: After Story really delivers well with its promise of feels. On a sidenote, it's the only fantastic work by Jun Maeda in that department while Angel Beats! is serviceable, it lacks the necessarily build up on its big pay off. Violet Evergarden and AnoHana are good but the melodrama in these shows is nothing to write home about. And we go to Your Lie in April, it's weird mixture of slapstick comedy and melodrama really is just off putting that it hurts the whole show and what's it is trying to do. |
