Really nice ED, OP kinda stale imo.
I also like how the new character took off her hat as they approached the top of the tower, since she had lost a hat from the wind up there previously, which we got to see later. Nice little nod there.
All in all this anime just gives me goosebumps every episode with it's stunning visuals and sometimes spot on music. Since I don't know anything about the original source material I don't have any problems with the pacing and such yet, even though I am a bit worried of where the story is going.

TLDR; Great ED, poor OP, good with a new character and nice attention to detail. A bit worried about where the story is headed.

Okay, now we’re getting somewhere. Nice drama this episode.

I haven’t read the novel, but you guys know this isn’t an adventure anime right? This is a drama made by KyoAni, which means that we should all know pretty much what to expect.. If you aren’t liking it so far, I’m not sure exactly what you’re waiting for...

What we call "adventures" are separate stories where Violet goes to the customer's location and writes letters for him/her. Of course, most of them have emotional endings. That's where the drama comes from.

That sounds super boring, if this anime is just about writing letters, I’ll probably end up dropping it halfway through.

I didn't say that all of the novel involves writing letters in each chapter.

Well the ghost letters worked out great for this episode, but if it followed the same formula every episode then I imagine it would get boring pretty fast.

this episode is actually pretty predictable but i still enjoyed it. i feel like violet should go through some more trials and failures but i think they will do that in the future. something like she redeemed herself once but shows that she still needs much more room for improvement.

im kinda sad that there are many people who call violet bland just because she shows no emotion. violet is a very consistently written character. she's a military weapon who is afraid of being useless because she literally has no purpose anymore. i think it's great that she's trying to find herself in the regular human world.

it was a very good episode, i think they will go for the boring romance route between the fighting characters right now.

also i still don't get what she meant last episode when she said "you wanted a girl"

Emotionally powerful and resonating. I feel like every episode in this show thus far has moments that make me want to tear up. I wonder what first-time binging this series would feel like after it all finishes airing.

I also have no problem with the episodic nature, as long as the characters are strong enough to carry it, and this show has no problems in that department for me.

Best OP song of the season, just hoped the beautiful visuals were a bit more... animated? (ironic considering this is the most well-animated shows of the season). I also really adore the ED's visual direction.

I feel like every emotion depicted in this series so far and genuinely felt by me is well earned. It's not overly melodramatic just for the sake of being some sort of cry porn (like Anohana and parts of Clannad), not that I dislike those type of shows, but this one is just... more grounded in its drama?

Although some may disagree with me, I think the way this show approaches its issues and its characters is very realistic, and oddly "mature" for anime standards (take that what you will, and please don't misinterpret what I am saying as I don't think shows that don't have mature themes are automatically bad)

Another thing that I felt this show does really well is how much it treats its characters with respect and consistency. Think about an anime in recently memory that didn't treat a "larger" side character as a NEET, a loser, or a creeper/pervert (other 3-gatsu/Shirobako). It is actually pretty refreshing.

Definitely the best episode till date.

I took a real liking to Luculia, I hope she's a recurring character.

The part where Violet gives Luculia's brother her ghostwritten letter made me tear up, that was a really well done scene.

Violet is finally beginning to understand the human heart. :)

The final scene with Luculia helping her brother back to place with the scenic view was great and congratulations to Violet for graduating.

this is the first sign of promise this show has shown so far

perhaps it will be worth the watch

...Ah but the only thing that bothered me was that she was able to graduate with just that little bit. That letter showed her potential to, rather than the proficiency to capture feelings, so it's kind of weird that was all it took.

I'm really enjoying this so far.

Violet finally learned how to convey emotion thanks to Luculia. It was interesting seeing her story and how it compared to Violet's. She's had a tough life so I'm not surprised she has so much emotion to contemplate. I hope going forward Violet will continue to grow from those few lines she managed to get down in her best letter yet.

I feel like this show has been moving pretty quickly despite each episode taking place over a short period of time. Kyoani really stuffed in as much detail as they could. And it shows too because so far it has been very engaging to watch.

I really like this episode seeing violet taking her first step to learn human emotions and feelings. Yea, it is different than the novel but it doesn't necessarily means it is bad it might be different than the original novel but I am welcome to learn more about the new side characters stories which also connected to Violet development. The story is simple, everyone can understand what the episode wanna deliver and more details on the Background of Violet Evergarden. It's pretty much like the after wartimes of WW1 tho
Overall, the music is well on point and the OP is nicely done! it really fits into the anime

The point is not about the graduate for writing one good letter, but violet taking her first step learning human emotions, she said she taking the first step and "May you be an exemplary doll"

Another lovely episode.

Really like how Kyoto Animation is fleshing out not only Violet's beginning but also the world itself these past 3 episodes. Really enjoyed the side character story and how it explored the life for veterans of the war outside of Violet herself since the novel didn't really cover that. The school for the auto memory dolls was a nice addition as well.

However i'm really struggling with the direction they are doing with this adaptation versus what they had in the novel. At this point it really is a re-imagining rather then a faithful adaptation which honestly I don't actually have a problem with that aspect! However the problem I have is the pacing...

The novels greatest strength and weakness is that it keeps everything concise and simple but at the detriment of losing out on world building. So Kyoto Animation changing the story is actually a welcome addition, but i'm worried it would be at the cost of losing out on some spectacular episodic stories later down the line because they were fleshing out Violet's beginnings. The pacing is super slow, like it feels like a 2-cour pacing, but at the same time since its a 1-cour everything feels rushed by the end and we don't get a satisfying narrative conclusion.

Overall I'll have to wait and see how the adaptation turns out, i'm enjoying the changes but worried about the direction TLDR.

Also super bare bone and boring opening. Really did not expect such an empty opening. I expected a slow paced opening after listening to the song previously but wow really bare bone...

Can you specify so far up to ep3, what're the difference?
Really curious though. Haven't read the novel.

Did you ever stop to think that this is an antiwar show? This last episode showed in great detail what happens to the survivors of the war Those who fought and the families of those who fought were all hurt.
It had nothing to do with writing a letter. It had to do with Violet learning to understand how to feel. She was trained to be a weapon. The major developed feelings for her even though she was just a weapon.
Now that the major is gone she is trying to understand the feelings that the major had for her In other words, she is trying to learn what it means to be human

Liked the episode, its a build up to what violet would become in the first volume of the novel.
Still, i would preferred if the pacing is a little faster so we get to see the clients in the novel, because thats where the hard-hitting tearjerking part is.
I mean we already at 3/14 episodes, only 11 more episodes left to cover two books.
It will be sad if they have to cut out content for time...
Any readers of the novel in this forums?

The OP is pretty ehh tbh.

I would call this episode a step up from the very underwhelming first two, but I really don't get how Violet passed those studies after writing one short message... which honestly still felt off considering her "quality" so far, I would have rather seen her fail and improve outside of that.

The story this episode was still pretty good tho, I hope it's a step in the right direction.

Great episode. The OST helped the emotional climax immensely. As I predicted, this series will be a bunch of short stories that Violet encounters which will slowly teach her about feelings/emotions.

Also, am I the only one bugged by the back of Violet's dress? It's like her dress is stuck on her panties after bathroom.

I agree with you 100%!

Maybe its because I never read the novel this is based on, but I am loving this anime! I think the story telling is very good and we are seeing Violet develop from an emotionless, almost robotic-like soldier into possibly becoming more human. She is actually learning to understand what human emotions are.

This. Some novel readers will complain that's different from the novel but I think the anime needed to show how Violet starts becoming more emphatic to the people around her, and this episode managed to do just that and did it pretty well.

Well, I did not read the original novel, but I was told that adaptation basically broadens it, and does not distort or change it.

Episode 2 was mostly anime original too, you know?

Anyway, the novel isn't anything groundbreaking. It's a nice little drama. One thing about the novel is that it starts when Violet is already working as a Doll. The anime staff probably felt they needed to dedicate a few episodes to show how the fuck she managed to become a somewhat competent Doll to begin with. This episode did just that.

I'm just sitting here wondering...who was that student with brunette hair with the single-braid, wearing green sitting in the far back corner desk, or rather--why did they put so much emphasis on her reaction? My first guess was she was related to the instructor since they both had very high cheekbones, like she was her daughter or something. Or maybe this is supposed to be setting something up for a future episode where she'll take the focus like Luculia in this episode. Or maybe she was just a one-off noname character who got nervous at the the instructor's strict demeanor, I don't know. At the very least, it looks like she graduated the class as well, so I doubt there will be any drama brewing there. I hate it when little things like this make me overthink mysel, as it's still nagging at me in the end.

Oooh, True is singing the OP. Good choice!

200 characters per minute...so around 40 words per minute, the average typing speed. We're taking keyboarding class!

LMAO! That letter! Violet is such a soldier!

Well it looks like Violet figured out a way to express one's feelings in ghostwriting: keeping it short, sweet, and to the point. And she can start learning more from there. I'm guessing that the peak of the story is when Violet finally writes a full-fledged letter of her feelings. That'll be worth watching.

Wait...uhh...so how many classes does an AMD need to take to graduate? All they had to do was write one good letter? And why are all the AMDs female? That's racist. *DING!*

Heartwarming episode. The brother of Luculia finally realized that he was the important person for her sister. While Violet, didn't pass the challenge at first, but she gave her best at last after writing a letter. Writing a letter shouldn't have flowering words sometimes, little things could also be impactful. This was somewhat likeable but there's something that I do not like about this anime, I cannot explain it.

The story is still crawling along at a snails pace and Violet still has zero character growth.

When she wrote the letter to Luculia's brother she invented a new technique. Instead of taking vague words and finding the right way to type them she made Luculia breakdown and made her tell Violet exactly what she wanted to say. So more like a therapy session than a letter writing session.

Luculia had a more compelling story and growth in this one episode than Violet has had in 3!

Hmmh its really hard to say what was adapted since they are sorta mixing themes and idea with original content. Basically instead of what she did in a certain chapter for example they replace it with an anime original content with a different perspective, and they are switching around the timeline. No spoilers for anything passed this point in the anime but spoilers if you want to read the novel fresh

TLDR: The weird thing is the novel lacks what the anime is strong at, vice versa the anime is weak where the novel is strong.

It really rushes past the world building so Cattelya, Benedict aren't really a character, the postal service has no detail or depth, and the world just falls flat and boring. Where as the anime really goes in depth with everything but at the cost of the main character Violet having a slower development and the story pacing falling. (thats why majority of people just think of her as an kuudere/autistic robot/PTSD Saber). You have to realize in the novel they basically imply and rush past her rehabilitation in becoming a normal human being so when the novel starts with her working already, shes exhibit emotion like embarrassment, happiness, etc. Shes just more subtle about it (think disappearance version of Nagato Yuki.)

The novel is short according to me but it has 13 chapters which could have been easily adapted this way: 1 episode = 1 chapter (eventually two episodes for the last chapter of the second volume).
They do have material, it's just that the director s****. Kyoukai no Kanata was one of the worst Kyo Ani anime I've seen and I was afraid for Violet Evergarden anime adaptation when I saw his name. Really, what's wrong with this kind of directors who decide to change things while the source material is good???

You mean that the anime will only adapt the first volume, then there'll be a new season for the second volume?
Maybe they'll do a one-cour anime, then a recap movie and eventually a sequel if they didn't cover the whole novel in the anime... as for Kyoukai no Kanata. What a waste while the anime could have been really good considering the novel...

Man, I couldn't agree more there.

Me, too. I'm REALLY glad Violet Evergarden is NOT like Kyoukai no Kanata, some of my best friends recommended me Kyoukai no Kanata, but when I watched it I thought it is average. Might be because I never really got warm with the main heroine. If I think back, I still don't. I didn't buy her behaviour from her. Felt unauthentic/ unrealistic for me.

To speak for Violet Evergarden, reading the comments I got to be aware that the anime seems to be adapted in a different way. I haven't read the novel yet, but I really like how it is depicted so far and also the pacing of the show.

Excellent episode, watched it twice!

Violet's story continues to progress admirably. The art as always was top notch. The variety of music and instruments used is wonderful: violins for one piece, and then flute and piano for another.

Luculia's simple story was aptly used to prize out more of Violet's story and moved her character development forward. She is not always doing things exactly the way she was told to do them (removing her gloves) and is moving beyond the literal interpretation of her world and doing so in a way that cuts to the soul of the issue (very Violet) but still evokes the heart (her letter to Luculia's brother).

I also think, that Violet shows some character development, after all, she's trying to understand more what lies behind her current capabilities. I also think that having a friend, which Luculia seems to be for me, is a great thing. I know, there are the people from her workplace, who mostly are awesome characters as well, but I think it still makes a difference, if someone is a coworker or not. So far so good, the vibe I get from Violet Evergarden is kinda realistic in a good way. I know may lack in some details, like the letter from the last episode not being proofread, but for this episode, I don't mind her passing the auto memoir doll school. After all, she was one of the best with her skills, besides her understanding, but know she even shows signs that she starts to understand more and more. She didn't even try to write everything Luculia said. No, she tried to get what might be core of what has been said. And as we see at the end of the episode, she really helped out Luculia and her brother. I wouldn't mind to see Luculia again in the future, but I'm not sure if that'll happen as so many said, that the source material has been very episodic.

As it is for now, I really like the pacing and the development in Violet Evergarden. Yes, I haven't read the novel yet, but I'm really interested to see in which direction this is going. Although, wait... I think I'll wait until the anime has come to further development. I know the adventures of going to customers and writing for them, might be truly heart-touching stories, but I'd rather see the development of Violet and what lies behind her story, for example what's going to be with the major, how it works out for Violet etc. For now, the proportion between being an episodic anime and telling the whole story has been met really well. I get the feeling that the story is progressing, but it is also very convenient to watch on a weekly basis. That's usually not that easy to achieve.

I also get a very "grounded" feeling off this show. I haven't seen a series, which convinced me that much from the very first episode on. The love seems to be in the detail like the world, the characters, the animation, the music and also the pacing. It never felt off for me, but I don't mind good slow paced shows, so I guess I'm not the one to speak up here. xD Something which seems t me important is also how the world is bild up and if there is a consistency in it's characters interaction with the world itself. It feels natural, not out of the ordinary for this world. And it's so great to finally see a show again, which is not set in a fantasy background. Don't get me wrong, i'ts not as if I don't like fantasy shows, but it is so much more relatable to get such a setting. :3

I agree with you on that point, I also get similar vibes, which I usually get from stories that are set during the war and tell stories about this time. It shows so many aspects of the war, while we haven't seen that many scenes of the war itself. Another thing is the "major is gone" topic, I kinda get the feeling that there is more to come about or with the major. Not sure, if he really is dead. But even this uncertainity suits this show well.

Oh! I didn't see that! Need to watch that scene again and look if I get what you mean. :) Not sure, if you overthink this indeed, but I'll come back to you about it. As it is for now, I get the feeling that the more I watch/rewatch the individual episodes I get to be aware of other aspects of this show. Violet Evergarden truly is enjoyable, even after already having watched the episode.

...

So, now I watched the scende again you told us about and I agree with you that might be some foreshadowing we see there! While watching the episode, I was also stucked on that thought for a moment, but tho be honest I totally forgot about her after that, because of the development taken during the episode.

I also think that we will see her again at a later point. But about the drama part... I'm not so sure bout that. She either seems to be a rather poor person or one who has to fight and struggles with some things in life. So, I don't think it will just be a happy welcome back as soon as we see her again. Not sure if she's somehow related to the instructor, though. She was only shown twice (It think), but got some impact during the short sequences. At first the emphasis on her reaction and second the being "centered" during the scene of the graduation.

But I'm not sure, if you should think even more into it for now, because it might be that we won't see her for a while, because of the partly episodic storytelling in Violet Evergarden. Oh my, I love it when shows do such fine foreshadowing! *__*)/ <3

I didn't read the novel so my opinion is only based on the adaptation.

I think a slow start is not that bad like most of you seem to think. For the first 3 episodes, I can sense that Violet is actually improving and start to understand people more (I really don't think she could write a letter like that one 2 episodes ago). But I do agree that they need to speed up the pace knowing that there's only 14 episodes (I think) and it can end really fast if they don't. Now that she graduated, let's see if they install a more interesting plot, but I'm not disappointed so far.

PS : The relationship between Benedict and Cattleya is gold xD

OK, so the episode 3 has come out.
First because i have to admit that before the anime air i had a very high expectation, they made the PV beautifully. they did not give a lot of information tough, so in my conclusion their very beautiful song and graphics in the pv is what make people(including me) ver high expectation, and lot of people declared that it's th best anime, the most beautiful anime, it can defeat FMAB and lalalalala.... but in the first episodeit was like someone spray a water to my torch. my expectation went down a lot(STILL DON'T HATE THE ANIME). almost 70% of what i tough about VE are wrong. But we must not hate it because we had an overly high expetation(still wondering where the score 8.58 come from to).. wellll....... about episode 3 i think it went way better than previous 2 episode, in episode 1 it was like telling that everything that i though was wrong, in episode 2 it made me almost hate violet if not because i know about her past. in episode 3 they make a lot of improvement. violet characteristic has improved a bit. her skill is improved a bit, make my (almost) hatred frome episode 2 disappear. it shows several emotional moment, but still it is not violet who has them(i think). it shows about how emotional people around her can be, about the atmosphere after the war. so it is better than the previous episodes. but still what (a little bit) annoyed me is my curiousness about what violet wrote in the letters, what make the colonel smiles in the end. because i think eventho luculia's letter has what you call "touching", but comparing what other dolls did, few sentence in the letter should not have been enough for graduiatng the doll school.

so i think i will score this episode 6.9/10 much better than the previous 2.....

Luculia had a more compelling story and growth in this one episode than Violet has had in 3!

i agree with you, but i think violet has a bit improvement

Easily the best episode yet. I am starting to get tired of hearing about Major so yeah, it was nice to see Violet moving forward a little.

Baby steps are better than no steps I guess.

Not liking how Luculia spoke about Violet in the end with past tense, hope we see more of her.

Character development is kinda lacking tbh, I'm still not sure what role Benedict is supposed to play in this series + his beef with Cattleya makes things more confusing.
