AFter watching Welcome to the Ballroom, I was blown away with Shizuku Hanaoka's oozing sex appeal in that anime without really being too blatant or too trashy which is like how anime usually portrays sex appeal. From the moment she was introduced, just almost all her appearance in the anime screams sex appeal to me and when it comes to her dancing, oh boy.
I mean look

So, I got into thinking how much the impact differs than the normal route an anime take of just panty shots and whatnot. I got more titillation in her character more than I did for any other characters I watched in an ecchi series. And I'm saying this as someone who like watching ecchi for titillation too.

If all ecchi series have this approach to sex appeal, it would be nicer tbh. Don't you think so too?

I mean yeah I like that more as well but that's not ecchi, that's just general sex appeal. If that was ecchi, Hollywood and western media would be full of 'ecchi' but it isn't.

Thanks for differentiating good sex appeal from bad sex appeal.

I for one never understood the obsession with panty shots. I honestly don't find them to be arousing in the slightest.

I just think it would be nice if ecchi have this approach since ecchi's whole foundation is titillating its audience.

Yeah, this is what I call the good kind of fanservice.
One Piece episode 914 & 915 were a mistake.

Im pretty sure this sexual appeal you're feeling towards her is because you like her character and as such she becomes physically attractive too even without fan service but it doesn't make it better
I like Nana the most of any girl so practically everything she does is sexy to me. Even just raising her arms is sexy to me

but its not something I could say is better than a panty or chest shot. Its something you can appreciate in a different way yes but its not related to each other so I wouldn't say one is better than the other

Well, I don't.

Some people prefer it this way, personally I'm enjoying the in-your-face nature of ecchi more than this.

the whole approach of ecchi is to cater to an audience which doesn't enjoy the more sophisticated/indirect/realistic approach to sex appeal that you can easily get outside of ecchi already, or at least not as much as, well, ecchi.

I mean Ballroom isn't an ecchi by any means for a reason. Subtlety is great but ecchi kinda implies the promise that you'll get more than just subtleties when it comes to sex appeal, that's what attracts ecchi fans, that's the whole business model of ecchi.

It's just a chick moving around

Seems like a weird thing to be aroused by but whatever floats your boat man, but if ecchi series took this approach then they wouldn't even be fucking ecchi, they'd be chick slowly spinning in circle

This seems like such a stupid decision to try to actually apply to ecchi that I'm almost at a loss for words and would like to just believe this is just a shitpost thread, if I can be brutally honest

Absolutely, 100% do not want

Probably why MAL uses tags to distinguish shows with ecchi from others. Although idk if a "general sex appeal" tag would work. 'Course I'm just generally very picky about what I find appealing so tags do fuck all for me.

I mean at the end of the day it doesn't matter, what makes me beat my dick makes my beat my dick either way. Panties, boobs, butts, skirts, legs, sex, ecchi, not ecchi, loli, trap, incest, etc. There is no right and wrong when it comes to the art of the fap.

As much as I like you my friend, and as much as I agree with subtle showing of sex appeal in anime

It is after all ecchi you're comparing it to.....it's made to be exaggerated because thats it's appeal
It's like taking a really sexy scene from a romance movie and comparing it to porn, ofc the porn star is gonna have her naked tits in your face that's it's appeal. That's why people watch it

That being said now there is one particular female character I find insanely attracted to even tho she is never portrayed in a sexual way
Miho Azuki ,something about her just does it for me idk lol

Hmmm... I just pulled out this gif from the available gifs from google searching it since I don't really want to be posting a video of a scene here because spoilers and how allergic pp; are of videos in threads. But that gif only shows how sensual her character design and her whole movements are even if it's just for a second. In the context of her dancing in a competition for example, her whole sensuality is in full display without even needing to strip or show a panty shot.

But it's such a waste for them not to be experimenting with this but I guess I do get your point.

But the point of ecchi in the first place is trashy pandering fanservice. And anyone who already likes ecchi couldn't give a shit about their jerk off material being tasteful or not. The replies here already prove it.

Subtlety does not necessarily equates to being better. Sure i can appreciate a series for being more subtle when it comes to its sex appeal yes, but when it comes to ecchi i want the series to be explicit in its content and not hide it. Tho that is my take on it.

Well, if you like that then all power to you man, make no mistake. I have better things to do than arse myself being concerned with what other people find attractive ._.

An ecchi lives and dies by being a product that emphasizes the sex appeal of its characters, rather than downplaying it, meaning I think your proposal is flipping an ecchi into something almost dead-opposite of what distinguishes one from other types of series - it could be simple exposure, could be situational things, etc., perceived favorite ways entirely withstanding. It could be argued that this railroads it away from things like this being considered ecchi and in favor of a more in-your-face approach about these aspects, but that's how it is. Ecchi is not "something a viewer finds sexually appealing" - if that were the case, the way the tag is applied on this site would become even more borked as it is because something like, idk, idols practicing their stage routine in an idol anime could be considered attractive to some. In this context, unless it's zooming in parts of their body to establish favorable camera angles to draw out the sex appeal one could feel towards that part of their body or it's turned into some overtly risqué situation then it's not an ecchi. If they're just practicing dancing, then they're just practicing dancing and any sex appeal found within the product happens as a reaction from the viewer rather than something the show is putting in as an overt aspect belonging to that scene.

Like, Dekn sort of delved into this in his post, but look at this panel from the TLR manga -

She's slowly opening her eyes, making a bit of noise as she wakes up, you can see her ears kind of hidden beneath her hair, etc etc - I find this panel immensely attractive for reasons like that, more attractive than many of the ecchi scenes in this series, but like Dekn, that's largely in part due to the character on my end as well and I would find it substantially less attractive if it weren't Run. I recognize that this may not necessarily be the case every time somebody finds something like this attractive, though, but either way, this does not make it an ecchi scene.

Slight digression aside, the point I'm trying to make with that is that a character making a couple of noises and slowly opening her eyes after being KO'd by a stray soccer ball is not really emphasizing her sexual appeal. A character making a couple of noises and slowly opening her eyes while waking up after being KO'd by a stray soccer ball is just a character making a couple of noises and slowly opening her eyes while waking up after being KO'd by a stray soccer ball. Can it have sex appeal? Sure. Everything that exists pretty much can in some way, even if we wouldn't like to think about some of them. But if so, there's no emphasis on this potential as an aspect to the scene. Emphasis of these aspects is the foundation of what distinguishes a series like TLR and a series like Ballroom to begin with.

-----

I wrote this to somebody else in my profile comments section a long while back for a different-yet-not-entirely-removed-from-this-topic conversation, but it's probably a better way of trying to explain my point than I'm doing here:

@Manaban But I liked this character because of her sex appeal that the show subtly but surely emphasized. Be it in the clothes she wear, how she moves, or just how she presents herself. I do think the creators put an emphasis on her sex appeal. But that aside, you do bring an interesting point. Hmmm.. I never really approached this topic that way.

This just begs the question in my mind, is the only thing that can emphasize a sexual appeal and be called an ecchi series just in your face stuff? Or can it be done via subtlety? Well, depending on the answer I got from the ppl here so far, an ecchi series does seem to require in your face stuff it seems.

I guess that's a way to put it. I'm somewhat hesitant to agree to anything that implicates outright railroading of how a type of work can be created, but there's a huge difference between an upskirt shot and a character just doing their workout routine, like, idk, Rocky's training montage in his boxing movies or something. Can one find the latter example attractive? Yeah, sure, but not everything people can find attractive is necessarily something that should be labeled as overtly sexual at its foundation.

Sorry mate. I don't even see the sex appeal in that chick twirling around. I don't watch ecchi nearly as much as I used to, but for me it really needs to be in your face and blatant. In fact for me it must have nudity and be uncensored as well. If I'm looking for something ecchi I want it to go all in. Now if I'm watching something ecchi but not watching it *for* the ecchi, like the Monogatari Series for instance, then I don't equally care how it presents its ecchi. But if I watch a series for the ecchi, it must be ecchi as can be. I don't *really* like sex scenes, so I'm not particularly fond of hentai, but I want my ecchi series to be as close to hentai as possible without actual sex scenes. So the form of ecchi you're suggesting would not sit well with me at all.

But maybe if they did both in the same series... That'd be nice xd

tbh, I agree that discrete fanservice like your Ballroom example is much more appealing than blatant tits and ass closeup shots. Not only that, but I think the ecchi genre wouldn't get such a bad rap if it adhered to a certain level of 'subtlety' and 'class'. I mean, its fine if some shows are completely shameless and in-your-face with their fanservice, but they should be the exception to the rule.

But thats not what most fans want. In fact, its probably in complete opposite to the desires of most ecchi fan who just want cheap titillation.

@Deknijff

Eh, I've resigned to thinking nothing can be done about that. People failing to distinguish "emphasis" and "cheap" and treat them as inherently synonymous rather than something discerned as a case by case basis. Can go hand in hand sometimes, but inherently so is an absurd notion and should just be dismissed as operating in an ill-informed extremity and little else. It's not black and white, like emphasizing aspects of something is inherently cheap or taking the subtle route is inherently tasteful, which is kind of the root logic behind finding all ecchi scenes that put these sorts of things at the forefront to be cheap, or at least that's the impression I get 98% of the time.

Trying to distinguish between every type of fetish in ecchi is like trying to watch every single anime, which becomes more impossible every day. Instead, we create genres and situational stereotypes to cater to fans, advertising extensive mountains of boobs and ass. Not only do we see fashion innovations in the market, but we also find niches ranging from furry to loli. Any argument of what is better can only be derived from personal preference, since all escapades to the taboo land of research purposes are not equal. However, tastes develop over time, and what once erected excitement may only trigger a disinterest now.

It's fine to see sex appeal in a character, but seriously, there is nothing remotely related to erotism in that gif, unless you have a thing for dancers performing their routine and anyway I doubt it was made with that purpose in mind. It's not subtle treatment, it's simply non-existent.

As I said I just pulled out the best example for a gif I found ion google. The character itself oozes sex appeal and I'm willing to bet that she is designed to be sexy and erotic af.

So @Paradigmatic care to explain to me how her sex appeal is and how the show does it?
I yet have to see a show do that.

That can be true, but in an anime about ballet, seeing a character perform... what I mean is that this gif doesn't seem to have that intention, and it would be kind of absurd and invasive if it did. Not that I invalidate your arousement or something xD, my point only has to do with the purpose of the scene in question.

Sex appeal is different for everyone. It is varying degrees of (but not limited to) the following:
Height
Hair length/style/color
Eye color
Body type
Gender
Age
Personality
Clothing/accessories
Voice

What you find sexually appealing, the next person might not.
Some prefer tasteful & subtle, others prefer gawdy and "all up in your face".
Some even like it both ways.

To be titillated is to be made excited a little bit.
Titillating in a sexual sense is what the OP is implying, so I'll go with that.
Again, this will be different for each person.
Some prefer low-key, but others enjoy it more blatant & over-the-top.

"Tasteful & subtle" is not inherently better than "typical ecchi", nor the other way around.
It is up to the tastes of the individual viewer, and their preferences.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

No, because ecchi is almost always about getting into sexual titillating situations. It doesn't have to be subtle or classy but it should decide on what ecchi it is early on. There is borderline hentai and then their is ecchi that use these titillating situations to enhance other elements of the anime. I think the best any ecchi can do is at least make the titillating scenes believable in its narrative, its kinda weird to watch a comedy anime turn borderline hentai for a few scenes and then go back to status quo. Whatever level of ecchi the anime is going for it should stay at that level in the anime.

I immediately thought of Monogatari (except for Nise, which is downright blatant). So many scenes are dripping with sexual tension while keeping a lot hidden visually.
