and how ugly those 10-13 eps entries of haikyuu and gintama sequels look at the top 20 with their sequel-boosted scores?

Honestly I feel like FMA:B, Steins;Gate and the movies (Kimi no Na wa, Koe no Katachi, Spirited Away) are the only credible entries in the top 20, and strangely enough also Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso despite how many vocal haters it has

Everything else is quite significantly boosted from the sequel effect and/or the 1/5 rule (FMA:B is a little bit boosted from its length too, but at least you don't need to watch the 2003 version first)

The Berserk manga is undeniably the real king of MAL though. It's still publishing so literally all votes for it count and it doesn't have any prequels, yet it's still at 9.30. Not that I'm a fanboy of it by any means but it's hard to argue with statistics

I think if we could take all the mainline entries for a series, and then have the weighted scores be averaged, to ultimately determine the position on the list, that would be ideal.

I also wouldn't mind if this was a new top list entirely. A "top franchises" list or something. Of course, this list should also allow for franchises that only have one series in them.

Also, only series with eligible weighted scores (with 50+ users) would be used for the overall average.

So, for instance:
Gintama - 9.02
Gintama' - 9.13
Gintama': Enchousen - 9.08
Gintama° - 9.20
Gintama. - 9.04

Add them together and divide by 5, and we get:
Gintama Series - 9.09

Another example:
Bakemonogatari - 8.37
Nisemonogatari - 8.21
Otorimonogatari - 8.77
Tsukimonogatari - 8.20
Owarimonogatari - 8.43
Owarimonogatari 2nd Season - 9.28

Add them together and divide by 6, and we get:
Monogatari Series - 8.54

I think this kind of top list would be really interesting to see, even if it didn't replace the current one. The only problem is how to determine what the main entries of a franchise are. I suppose you could only include things that have "sequels" and "prequels" attached to each other, but that also isn't a perfect system because sometimes there are multiple sequels and it might mess things up if a sequel ends up splitting off becoming separate series in a way. That is definitely a rare case, though.

You need to watch at least 20% of all the episodes of a finished anime for your rating to be taken into account. So for longer series this scales quite poorly (I.E: you need to watch 41 eps of Gintama for your vote to even count, etc)

I agree. In order for ratings to be counted for MAL's top spots, only those should be considered that have been given to ALL watched eps of the anime. The ratings of who have dropped it or put on hold should be immediately discarded.

Actually he's saying the opposite. You don't have to watch 200 eps of One Piece to know if you're gonna like it or not. Super long running shows are effectively immune from being scored by people who dropped them, vs the rest.

I want to see what happens to the list when MAL uses a different algorithm. Does anybody know if the rank is affected by the popularity of an anime (like an anime with 1 person with a rating of 10 is lower than an anime with 2 people with a rating of 10)?

what you describe in paranthesis is actually true, but the impact is very small (<0.01)

see the formula here: https://myanimelist.net/info.php?go=topanime

long story short, every anime gets 50 ratings of "mean score across the entire Anime DB" added to the user ratings to make the final average

e.g. let's say the average score in the database is 6..
an anime with 100 people who rated it 10 would have its average be (100 * 10 + 50 * 6)/150=8.66
an anime with 200 people who rated it 10 would have its average be (200 * 10 + 50 * 6)/250=9.2

the formula was made in like 2007 when the internet & mal were way smaller; nowadays with animes having tens of thousands of ratings it has very small impact

Every top list in every page dedicated to any entertainment medium is a joke. MAL also happens to have separated entires for sequels (which makes sense considering how inconsistent anime is with sequels, in every sense of the word) and thus looks slightly worse. Get over it.

I just think it's because the way people consume anime is different now than it used to be. Fans of any medium have to be adaptable as does the medium itself, and with so much anime coming out each season people hype over an anime or two for a few months (or a few years if we push the boat out) and when the next fresh thing comes out, that'll probably make it into the top 10 for a while.
Rinse and repeat. Consumerism.

The audience is fickle and the anime is shorter (for the most part).

It's pretty rare that any of these newer series "stick" like the older ones and that's reflective in MAL's "top anime" rankings. Soon enough, at least 5 of that top 20 will likely be different anime- probably ones that air in the coming seasons/years.

If Haikyuu doesn't get a season 4 soon, I can see it dropping lower because the hype will slowly die- it's been a while and people are quick to get disenchanted (all it takes is removing it from your favorites and editing the score after a second thought or some new competition). I'd also expect another Gintama season infiltrating the top 10 bc of its new season fast approaching.

Stuff like HxH, LOGH, Clannad & FMAB aren't going far though I'd say XD

Anyway, whilst the list itself probably isn't reflective of the best or even the most popular anime, I'd say it's definitely reflective of the fans' habits.

What do you guys expect from MyAnimeList ratings? Lmao
All that matters here is how large the fanbase for a particular franchise is/how many fanbois/-girls it has that will rate the respective Anime with 8/10 or higher for no real reason.

Stop taking yourself and your taste in anime so seriously. In literature or films, everyone also has a different list. Critics have different lists. Because it's an art form. People just have different taste. Not to mention a medium targeting mainly to teenagers who don't really know what they want in their entertainment and that everyone can rate in this site.
