Do you prefer your anime to have a sad or happy ending?
Some endings are bittersweet (CG, Death Note, Clannad After Story, Angel Beats) but would you enjoy an anime more if it had a happy ending or a sad one?

Like I know I would have enjoyed Dusk Maiden of Amnesia a lot more if

Another example is Little Busters. It would have had more of an impact and meant more if at the end

And yeah, Requiem for the Phantom ended up making me a bit depressed and underwhelmed after I finished it, but I have a lot more respect for the series becuase the characters didn't dance off into the sunset.

What do you guys think?

I like happy endings. I'm ok with endings like Akame ga Kill which were not what I was expecting, but it at least ended well.

Sad endings leave room for an unresolved conflict or lack of resolution.

Something like Requiem for the Phantom had a decent ending, with an anime like that, I was expecting it to end some way like that.

It doesn't matter to me. The ending could the highest possible outcome of happiness statistically possible, but if that specific anime was a really good one, I still feel depressed because of it ending.

Both :3

It depends on the story and characters :3

If the characters is good and loveable I would want them to have a good ending
If the characters is perhaps criminals that killed alot of people for the greater good but became corrupted then a Sad ending is ok too :3

Depends on what fits for the story. Some are better suited to happy endings, some sad. As long as it provides a satisfying conclusion to the story and stays true to what it means to say, I'm good.

It just depends on the anime.

Usagi Drop. How sucky would it be if the ending was sad?

I don't mind as long as it fits. Or if it doesn't fit, a good reason for it not fitting.

Although for films, I do chose what I want to watch based on my mood at the time and my preconceptions of what the ending would be like...

Doesn't really matter IMO as long as it is good. I mean steins gate and code geass both have polar opposite endings (in terms of happiness and sadness) but i absolutely love both of them.

I also dont have a problem with cliffhangers etc as long as either another season is guaranteed (like in case of SNK) or it is left ambiguous intentionally (cant really think of an example here :D )

The ones i dont like are absolutely illogical ones like clannad or SAO aiancrad arc etc (pls dont kill me now coz these 2 are apparently fan favourite :p )

I somehow still sit through the first viewing of an anime totally immersed, the second, third time, etc. I always watch for writing, animation, voice acting, direction, soundtrack, camera work and so on. I don't know why that is but I am really happy that I am still able to enjoy shows as much or even more as five or ten years ago.

To answer your question a sad, bittersweet or happy end doesn’t determine my enjoyment of the piece in question. The implementation of the story is the only thing that I let affect the enjoyment of a show (It was a bad execution or it was a good execution) understanding that perfections isn’t a realistic mindset. Every anime has it flaws (goods points and bad points) and with that kind of understanding I can determine if I liked the resolution for the show that I watched… I have numerous amines that I like that have a bittersweet end I also have in my top a show that have a sad end.

I would say that the more knowledgeable (experience) I get about watching anime I am definitely more critical (Sad ending, Bittersweet end or a Happy end fit the story) but I can still love and appreciate all kind of shows/movies. If anything I can appreciate good anime shows even more than before.

happy endings, because who the fuck likes sad endings.
ps. clannad afterstory had a happy ending, because i was happy at the end. every body was happy at the end. it was not bittersweet. Unless your talking about the fact that sunohara was still around.

I don't like fully happy or fully sad endings; one is too saccharine and the other is too depressing. My favorite kind is a bittersweet ending: the characters may have faced horrible adversity and had bad things happen to them, and the ending may not be 100% happy, but they truly earned the right to have their life look up through their work, and it's really what most "happy endings" are in real life.

Depends on what the theme, tone, atmosphere and plot of the anime was. Fate/Zero with a happy ending would just not work out as amazingly well as the ending we got instead, which fits with the overall tone and atmosphere of the show.

Al: Why Mr. Tucker, the whole point was to pass the assessment to continue your way of life, but now your family is gone. What life is left?

Tucker: That’s the funny thing, I didn’t have a reason. I fully understood no matter what I did my life would be ruined. I could either do it with the science or without, and so I choose science to see if I could.

Ed: What kind of man…

Tucker: When you have the power to do something it’s hard not to try, isn’t that what we agreed on, Ed? Aren’t we so much alike? Sure, part of me did it for respect and this house, just as you partly did it for your Mother, but there’s more. You’re desperate to put your mind to use, Ed. To see what you’re capable of, to put the world under your fingers. That’s the essence of alchemy. You did it for knowledge. Control. Above all, You did it just to prove you can.

If I have to choose an extreme, it will be happy. I don't like it when sadness is cheapened.

But in general I don't pay attention to the tone of the ending. I care more about how the ideas were wrapped up. This means the most.

I honestly thought that Fate/Zero was the first animated series (or really, the first light novel or the first series) that comes to my mind when the question about preferences on endings was raised, not only because the ending fits well with the story and characters for me, but also because it works good enough as a prequel to the three Fate/stay night storylines. This also means that knowledge about these three Fate/stay night storylines is needed in order to understand why Fate/Zero's story works as it is. That's just me.

I like sad ending even though that make me really sad. I just like that it leaves me thinking a lot about it after it ended, and i will possibly always remember it due to the impact it had on me. Also i think it's harder to make a good sad ending...some creators think it's enough to just randomly kill a bunch of people...woops...

I dunno, I always thought it was a bit of both because Okazaki still had to go through a whole lot to get to where he ended up.

How many anime are there that actually has happy endings that are blissfully overly happy? I think they're pretty rare. Most anime I watched either have sad or bittersweet endings, excluding "feel good" anime of course.

Happy endings all the way. I'll also accept open-ended if it leaves it on a fairly positive note.

To me, anime is escapism. I'm not looking for serious themes or deep philosophy. I'm not asking for something that's going to stimulate my emotions or re-evaluate my life.

I want to watch a show and come away thinking it was a pleasant way to spend 6 hours of my life. Sad endings ruin that for me.

Type of ending I like the most - an ending that open for interpretations.

As I've said every time this topic has come up, I love happy endings. But not every story can end happily or it takes all the seriousness out of the entire medium. So while I love and hope for happy endings, sad endings are always welcome to remind me that things can ALWAYS go South.

Still, I usually find that one might be more appropriate than the other, depending on the story of the anime and its genre.
