What's the deal with the western anime community? Sports anime/mangas have a pretty decent and stable fanbase in Japan, but in the West there is no love!! I swear, everywhere single awesome sports manga that i get into (Baby Steps, Fantasista, Area No kishi) are at least 100 chapters behind despite being pretty popular. It gets pretty frustrating when supbar spin offs like Naruto gaiden get translations so easily ;_________;

I mean yeah, i get there's a pretty big following for Kukuro no Basket and shit but that's pretty much the only sport series I know that has a pretty good fanbase. Too bad it's not really my kind of thing because of all the supernatural like stuff in it.

I don't like sports anime.

It's always the same formula: hard working protagonist cycles between training and competitions.

Instead of showing the damn action, the writers decide to have friendship speeches and long monologues mid-game, the coach explaining something for 2 minutes from the sidelines, etc.

Except Ping Pong. That show did it well

WE NEED MORE SPORTS MANGA/ANIMU. More variety, more sports. Pretty please, I agree. +1000 your thread.
If possible, in Major, Ping Pong, Haikyuu, Baby Steps and Daiya no Ace's quality. Am I asking for too much?

I'm thinking its because we get too much of that in the real world. People blathering about basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. The hype surrounding american football, the olympics, etc. It's just boring. There a couple exceptions though:

Right now i'm watching big windup 2, and free.
I am planning to watch Giant Killing, Ping Pong the Animation, Crossgame, all the Major seasons, One Outs, Yowamushi Pedal, Eyeshield 21, and Baki the grappler.
I've already seen Bamboo Blade, and Big Windup.
I'm not really an avid sports fan or sports anime fan, but some of them seem interesting and worth seeing. I do like Baseball and soccer though somewhat.

Anyhow, A LOT OF manga that aren't sports don't get scanned because of lack of people that will scan them. It's so very hard to find a translator for a manga scan group and getting the raws isn't easy either. And all the rest of people (Proofreaders, cleaners, typesetters, redrawers). So yeah maybe your sports manga isn't getting translated due to lack of funds or whatnot. And it looks like your manga gets scanned every month, so don't complain, that's actually pretty good. and the people scanning it have a lot on their plate: https://www.mangaupdates.com/groups.html?id=2757

You might love another works of Tetsuya, Ore wa Teppei.
It's full of comedy, yet quite good on the fighting scenes.
It gets more serious later on, but maintained the 'brat' attitude of the MC on his journey in kendo.

Because sports just isn't interesting in general as a basis for fictional stories. It has nothing to do with anime/manga per se, I wouldn't watch a western TV-show about a rugby team either exactly

I mean yes there definitely exist some great sports anime out there (like I love Chihayafuru for example) but that's just because of how unique Karuta is, as it is something you wouldn't really find anywhere else in the same way. But if it's about an athletic activity I could just watch on TV any day of the week however... then yeah I'd rather just do that

Actually maybe I should phrase it like this instead: when you're watching a game of sports IRL, then the most important factor is that anything can happen. It should always have an element of uncertainty and unpredictability; that's how it builds suspense and feels exciting. But in fiction, this doesn't really exist, because everything is scripted. You can almost always figure out how a game will end before it even started just because of the fact that it was written to play out that way by the author. Even if it does manage to surprise you, it still doesn't really "shock" you in the same way it would IRL, it just makes you go "oh... ok then". It's just not the same.

Now of course there can still be plenty of other elements to a sports anime other than the sports itself, but if you're going to tell me I should watch it for that part alone then you're making a very contradictionary statement here, as you're basically telling someone to go watch sports anime for the sake of its non-sports aspects. And in that case.... well why not just go watch a non-sports anime to begin with? Seems like a hell of a lot better of an idea to me

I personally dislike a lot of sports manga/anime that center in/around school, often where the sport is a school sport. The nuances of the sport are there, but they almost always fall into the same general mold and suffer from meandering, typically uninteresting, slice of life. For the most part, I like sports manga that look at different sports from the milieu, as well as sports manga/anime where the sport itself is played outside of school.

All else equal, to look at a manga quick, both Hajime no Ippo and Buyuden are centered around boxing. Ippo is bloody, tense, and (generally) realistic. Buyuden is... alright. That latter sentiment is what I feel after reading so many sports manga. I don't care about the people. I feel the same way comparing Baby Steps and The Prince of Tennis.

Alternatively, really dumb techniques in sports manga turn me off. I liked Kuroko's Basketball for a while, but then the misdirection thing got really dumb, and I quit when they revealed "misdirection overflow." Doing that type of stuff is the worst thing a sports manga can do, in my opinion. And a lot of them do that. Sure, Ippo has its unrealistic moments (the whole Woli fight) but nothing falls to that level in Ippo or most sports manga/anime that I've read/watched that are outside the school. Maybe it's just me, but I feel there's a correlation there.

I think it has to do with the appeal of the genre. Many people who are not into sports anime are probably also not interested in watching sports on TV so they think it will be equally boring. Sometimes it's also because they don't know a lot about the rules of the sport, so they'll think they are going to be lost once the characters start playing.

I was also pretty biased towards the genre and it took me long until I started to watch more sports series. It's pretty great when you find something tat's not only focused on the games themselves but more on the characters and how the relationships evolve between them.

When you think everything exist on the internet :/
I've only found some unsubbed/undubbed on the tube, while the manga looks like never made it to western market.
I guess the older the series is the more difficult it is to find outside it's traditional medium.

seems to be the most common answer amongst people. Ignorant people who don't understand the difference between real life and fiction.

I for one find most sports anime to be great. We've only been getting a lot lately, years ago we would get maybe one a year. Hajime no Ippo is the best sports anime btw, with Ping Pong and Cross Game trailing.

Before I got into sports anime, I was under the impression that it was meant for athletes or was going to be similar to all of those Madden games where it would just be more sensible to go play/watch the sport in person. If there is a stigma against it, I imagine it would be from blind ignorance to what sports anime really has to offer. I don't really mind that there isn't a huge following for it in the West, but I just think people shouldn't write it off without trying a few first.

Fucking this. The ones that i always get into are always at least hundreds of chapters behind. So frustrating. Especially when you catch up when you're in the middle of a tense match/tournament and you're just like UGH, I NEED to know what happens next. I should seriously consider learning how to read Japanese.

Because sports isn't interesting in anime form. It follows a very basic formula where the MC is really hardworking and the whole team perseveres to win the match which is really the case because in real life, players really work and persevere hard. Basically when you watch sports anime, it's just mostly about interaction between the characters because it's the driving force of the anime. Most of the time sports anime just fall like a slice of life kind of anime with added bonus. I'd rather watch real sports because there's a feeling of uncertainty in it.
Although I can understand the popularity of some sports anime like Kuroko no Basket and Free! Kuroko has a huge fanbase for a sports anime because they added some supernatural stuff which made it different from the others where they are mostly realistic in a sense where there are no magic and stuffs happening. Plus it has bishounen characters which attracted a few females to watch it solely for the purpose of watching them. The same can be said for Free because it's basically fanservice for women.

Sport entertainment in the US is one of the most lucrative industries in the world, because of that there are so many means of watching damn near every sport live, which means the market for fictional/non-fiction sport stories doesn't have too many legs to stand on. The market for sport entertainment, that isn't live sports, is dominated by live action films and many of them are biographical or tell a true story (western audiences love them). There have been a handful of television series like Friday Night Lights and Playmakers that function like sport anime series do, but otherwise there isn't much of a desire for them, and they tend not to last as long.

You also have things like this "Japanese Fans Rank Most Inspiring Sports Manga
Western audiences don't need fictional characters as sports inspiration. Live competition has so many avenues to the western public that kids can see their athlete heroes whenever they want to.

But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.
