When I first started watching I never gave out 10s, at that time to me a 10 meant there was absolutely nothing the show could do to improve itself, perfection! Now if I give out a 10 it's because I really loved the show. MAL's ratings are not a reflection of the show itself. but more so of the community. With that kind of mindset I'd rather a show I love be overrated than underrated.

Unforgettable. Easily re-watchable. Favorite of that genre. An overflow of emotions, be it joy, excitement, or sadness.

srs answer: you're trying to hard with all those calculations. It's just the fastest way to give you an unecessary headache. Just go with your guts and adjust your rating later if you feel you've been either too generous or too harsh.

That too, I've adjusted mine several times as I've filled out my list and really thought about my ratings. If you've been watching anime for awhile and are new to MAL it's a pain to just finish your list, let alone focus on ratings.

yeah i joined like last year and around then i had finished like 120 anime]
was a real hassle to put them down

I usually only give 10s to anime that...

1. Affected me so much on the emotional level where all i could think about was that series/movie. Where the movie/series so so engrossing that I felt the same emotions the characters felt. Clannad: AS, Angel Beats, Ef-a tale of memories/melodies comes to mind.

2. Make some sort of statement in regards to social commentary. This isn't necessarily a given, but I do thoroughly enjoy anime that make you think about the ethics of our society and the moral high ground. Shows like Shinsekai yori, Last Exile, and Zankyou no Terror are a few that come to mind.

3. Anime that are so ridiculously good on the production level and have a little mix of the first two points in there. This one is a little more limited, but I feel a series that fits that is Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

For me a 10/10 is something that impacted me enough to have me thinking about it long after it's over. Something that left me in awh. Something that reminds me just how awesome anime is and why I original got so hooked in the first place.

an anime that gets a 9 from me needs to meet at least two of the following criteria:
a masterpiece, perfectly animated, very memorable, brilliant character development, relatable, and have a sense in applying the anime in real life.

for a 10 the above criteria needs to be met as well, with an additional criteria: feels

I always felt as if it was better to rate with your heart instead of with an analytic process. No show will be perfect in a literal sense, so rating shows that way seems a bit flawed. I feel like people could rate more accurately based on enjoyment of all aspects instead of how well everything is done in an objective sense.

This, its the only way that a score can really mean anything. Thats why reviews discuss shows as opposed to just throw scores at individual components.

Also, I tend to judge shows based on what they are trying to achieve, who they are aimed at and how well they do what it is they are setting out to do. An analytical process doesn't really work in that sense because what shows are trying to do and the standards to which they should be judged is so varied.

10/10 is hard to attain. As long as an anime fall into a unique genre or have a unique setting, it would invite detractors based on its genre. One example: sci-fi and fantasy anime can always be criticized for the logical basis and consistency of the supporting universe.

imo Grave of the Fireflies could merit a 10/10 but I am sure some people whose granddaddies flew in Superfortresses would disagree with me.

and it really is all with my gut. i rate purely on enjoyment.
i only have three 10/10's on my list because that is i know that is what they are with no doubts in my mind -- biased or not. (but probably hah) if i have doubts or question myself giving it a 10, i just default it to 9 automatically.

Perfection? Nah.. There are no perfection in any anime imo.
Still 10/10 anime probably ones I enjoyed the most, made me cringe most of the time, or made me teared up/cry/laughed throughout the series.
Anime that have high quality animation, voice acting, impactful scenes are ones that deserve 10/10 in my book.

Even while using your rating system with 100 instead of 10 it doesn't make sense to give a anime wich you rate as a 94 a 10, it would make more sense to give it a 9 in that case. For example: 8=75-84 9=85-94 10=95-100

That's because in "zero-point" in MAL's rating system is 1/10, not 0/10, so some confusion arises. 0/100 translates to 1/10 in MAL. If we map the 0-100 scale linearly to MAL's 1-10 scale, the formula would be:

MAL rating = 1 + (9*(Percent Score/100))

So we'll get the following conversions:

0.00% - 5.55% --> 1/10
5.56% - 16.66% --> 2/10
16.67% - 27.77% --> 3/10
27.78% - 38.88% --> 4/10
38.89% - 50.00% --> 5/10
50.01% - 61.11% --> 6/10
61.12% - 72.22% --> 7/10
72.23% - 83.33% --> 8/10
83.34% - 94.44% --> 9/10
94.45% - 100% --> 10/10

You'll notice that the midpoint of the 1-10 scale is 5.5, not 5. So 50/100 converts to 5.5 on the MAL scale, and it really depends on your rules of rounding whether 5.5 should be a 5 or a 6. But since 50/100 is supposed to be absolutely average, then we choose 5/10 for it.

But the problem basically disappears if we change the MAL rating system to 0-10 scale. That way, we can just divide the percent score by 10 and then round to the nearest ones. The midpoint of the 0-10 scale is obviously 5, so 50/100 neatly converts to 5/10 in this new scale.

If only...

Anything which has rewatch and binge watch value is 10/10 for me.

But sometimes it can just be a one off 10/10 if I really like the anime, but its not worth a second watch due to knowing the plot.

I give a 1/10 to 14.99% and below. Problem solved.

It's not like that part of a rating scale needs any proper definition. Distinguishing a 4/100 from a 13/100 would be a waste of time that could be spent bashing said anime for being awful, or not thinking about it at all.
Now you're wondering if there's white text in any of my other posts.

Over there, I'm everywhere. I know that.
